Start by checking whether the problem affects one device or every device. If only one device is offline, look first at its Wi-Fi settings and saved network. If several devices fail together, investigate the router, modem, or internet provider. And if a device says it is connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet, it may still be communicating with your router even though the connection beyond it is down.
First, work out what has actually stopped working
Wi-Fi is the wireless link between your device and the router. Internet access is the connection from your home network through the modem and your internet service provider (ISP). Either link can fail independently.

Google and Microsoft both recommend checking whether other devices can connect (Google Home/Nest Help; Microsoft Support).
- Several or all devices fail together: Look at shared equipment, power and cables, and possible ISP trouble.
- Devices connect to Wi-Fi but report no internet: The wireless link may be working while the modem or service connection is not.
- Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting only in certain rooms: Distance, walls, interference, or a network handoff may be involved.
- The network name is missing: Check that Wi-Fi is enabled on the router and that you are looking for the expected network. Router controls and status lights vary by model.
Check the affected device before changing the router
On the device that cannot connect, make sure Wi-Fi is on and airplane mode is off. Select the network you recognize and enter its current password carefully. If the Wi-Fi name, password, or provider has changed, devices that used the previous details may need to reconnect; Google notes that some Nest or Home devices may need to be set up again after a network change (Google Home/Nest Help).

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Microsoft recommends forgetting the saved network and reconnecting if Windows is holding outdated network details. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the affected network, choose Forget, then reconnect from the Wi-Fi network list using the current password. Menu wording can vary slightly by Windows version.
If that does not help, Microsoft’s Windows guidance includes running the network troubleshooter and checking the Wi-Fi adapter and its driver. A network reset is a later step, not a first one: it removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings. VPN clients or virtual switches may need to be set up again afterward. These Windows steps do not describe the menus for phones or Macs; use the device maker’s instructions for those systems.

Restart modem and router equipment safely
A restart can clear a temporary equipment problem, but the correct sequence depends on what is installed. Some homes have separate modem and router units; others use a combined unit. Battery backups and status-light meanings also vary, so follow the manufacturer’s restart directions rather than assuming one timing or light pattern applies to every setup.
- Check that the modem, router, and their power and network cables are firmly connected.
- Use the maker’s instructions to power-cycle the relevant equipment. Google’s modem procedure, for example, says to unplug power and Ethernet, wait 2–3 minutes until the modem is fully off, then reconnect and wait for the internet light to become solid. That interval is specific to Google’s guidance, not a universal rule (Google Home/Nest Help: Restart modem).
- Allow the equipment to finish booting before judging the result. Other guidance may specify a different wait; Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guide gives a general restart sequence of at least 30 seconds and warns that connected users will be disconnected temporarily (Microsoft Support).
- Reconnect a device and check whether it can reach the internet. If the same problem remains across devices, move on to checking the provider connection.
Test location, signal, and interference
Move the affected device close to the router and test from an open location. If the connection improves nearby but drops in a distant room, the issue may be coverage rather than a complete internet outage. Walls and other physical barriers, distance, household bandwidth demand, and nearby wireless activity can all affect performance. Google also lists sources such as microwaves and baby monitors as potential contributors to weaker Wi-Fi performance (Google Home/Nest Help).

Compare available Wi-Fi bands
If your router presents separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names and your device supports both, try the other band. Google notes that 2.4 GHz may not achieve the same speeds as 5 GHz. That is a speed distinction, not a promise that one band will be more reliable in every home; walls, distance, and local interference still matter.
Check for overlapping routers
Two nearby routers using the same Wi-Fi name can cause devices to switch between networks or fail to connect, according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance. This can happen when a provider’s router is left active alongside a newly installed router or mesh system. Check which network the device actually joined and consult the equipment makers’ setup instructions. Do not disable a router’s Wi-Fi unless you know how that change affects the rest of your home network.

Separate a router problem from an ISP problem
If all devices have lost internet, first check whether your provider reports an outage. If the Wi-Fi connection to the router is working but internet access is not, the fault may lie with the modem or the ISP connection rather than the wireless link. Microsoft describes checking the default gateway on Windows as one way to test communication with the Wi-Fi router; if that connection succeeds, the modem or ISP may be the next place to investigate (Microsoft Support).

If your computer and modem/router support it, a temporary Ethernet connection can provide another comparison. Microsoft suggests connecting a computer directly to a modem by Ethernet where possible: if internet works there but not over Wi-Fi, the router is implicated. This optional test requires compatible equipment and may not apply to a combined modem/router setup. Do not buy replacement equipment based only on a single confusing status light or a device’s “no internet” message.

Choose the next step from the pattern
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| One device fails; others work | Recheck that device’s Wi-Fi, airplane mode, saved network, password, adapter, and operating-system diagnostics. |
| All devices fail after a restart | Check your ISP’s outage information and contact the provider about continuing or recurring service trouble. |
| Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet | Check modem and ISP status; if practical, compare with a wired connection. |
| Connection works close to the router but not farther away | Assess placement, walls, and interference before considering additional coverage equipment. |
| Connection fails near a second router or mesh system | Confirm which network the device joined and follow the equipment makers’ configuration guidance. |
Contact your ISP when several devices remain offline after equipment has restarted, a wired test also lacks internet, or the problem appears to be an area outage. If just one device is affected, use that device’s maker or operating-system support. Consider a router or mesh change only when the evidence points to router trouble or a coverage gap; Google identifies ISP service, modem and router issues, distance, obstructions, and interference as separate possible causes (Google Home/Nest Help).
