Hard drives are useful for AI storage because large datasets do not all need SSD-level latency. HDDs can hold high-volume training data, preparation inputs and less frequently accessed data at lower acquisition cost, while SSDs and memory handle latency-sensitive, random-access work. The practical choice is usually a tiered system, not HDD versus SSD for everything.
Why use HDDs for AI storage if SSDs are faster?
AI systems handle data at different stages and with different access patterns. Some data is read or written repeatedly and needs fast, low-latency access; other data is large, retained for long periods or consumed in sequential batches. Putting every byte on the fastest medium can be costly when only part of the workload benefits from that performance.

Hard drives can therefore serve as a bulk, connected storage tier for training corpora, retained source data, data-preparation inputs and warm or cold data lakes. Flash storage is better suited to IOPS-intensive and latency-sensitive paths. Tape or another archive medium can sit below both when slower retrieval is acceptable. Western Digital describes this approach as balancing performance with total cost of ownership in its AI and machine-learning storage discussion; this is vendor guidance, not a neutral benchmark.

How to match the storage tier to the AI workload
| Tier | Good fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Memory and SSD/flash | Frequently accessed model checkpoints, active indexes, latency-sensitive inference and IOPS-heavy data paths | Higher performance; acquisition cost can make it uneconomical for every retained dataset |
| HDD | Bulk training corpora, source data, data preparation, warm or cold data lakes, and workloads with throughput and service-level targets compatible with HDD access patterns | Lower-cost capacity at scale, but not a substitute for flash where low latency or heavy random I/O is required |
| Tape or other archive | Deep retention where access can be slower | Lower-cost archival capacity in exchange for retrieval latency |
Western Digital’s June 2024 AI data-cycle announcement positioned PCIe Gen5 SSDs for training and inference and a 64TB SSD for fast AI data lakes. Those were vendor product positions in a historical announcement, not evidence of present product availability or a universal design rule.

Throughput, IOPS and latency answer different questions
Throughput measures how much data a system can move over time. IOPS counts input/output operations per second, and latency is the time an individual request takes. A workload that streams large files in parallel may be constrained by throughput; one that makes many small, scattered requests may be constrained by IOPS and latency. A headline drive-speed comparison does not tell you which bottleneck matters.
Western Digital says storage architects typically place IOPS-intensive workloads on flash and throughput-intensive workloads on HDD. That is a useful starting point, not a guarantee: a real system’s result depends on the controller, network, parallelism, cache, workload and configuration. The cited sources do not establish a neutral, controlled HDD-to-SSD speed ratio for AI.

Are hard drives suitable for AI training data or RAG?
Training data and preparation
HDDs can be appropriate for bulk training corpora and preparation inputs when the pipeline can meet its target by reading data in batches or in parallel. If a training job stalls while waiting for data, faster storage, more concurrency, caching or a different data pipeline may be necessary. The decisive test is whether the full system delivers the required ingestion and preprocessing rate, not simply whether the dataset fits.

RAG databases and indexes
Western Digital lists machine learning, AI data preparation, fine-tuning and RAG databases among possible HDD uses. That does not mean every RAG database belongs on an HDD. Frequently queried indexes and latency-sensitive retrieval paths may need flash, while less active data or larger capacity-oriented portions may be candidates for HDD. Whether a particular RAG system meets its response-time target on HDD depends on its access pattern and service-level requirements.

What do cost and capacity figures show?
In a 2025 article, Western Digital reported that flash can cost “6x or more” to acquire at scale, attributing the figure to IDC’s Worldwide HDD Forecast 2025–2029, dated June 2025. Treat that as WD’s report of an IDC estimate, not a current universal price quote: actual relative costs vary, and the cited material does not provide current street prices.
Western Digital also reported that HDDs represented nearly 80% of installed worldwide data-center storage capacity, citing IDC HDD and SSD forecasts published in June 2025. This is a reported installed-capacity share, not a claim that HDDs hold 80% of performance-critical data or that every operator has the same mix.

For a real deployment, compare cost per usable terabyte rather than raw capacity alone. Account for redundancy, power and cooling, controllers, network capacity, recovery and rebuild times, and the cost of missing a service-level target. The sources support the broad economic case for tiering but do not supply a price or configuration recommendation for an individual system.

Backblaze’s July 9, 2026, Q1 Drive Stats release reported a 1.24% fleet annualized failure rate (AFR). It separately reported a 0.85% AFR for its 20TB-and-larger drives across more than 86,000 units; 92% of its newly deployed drives exceeded 20TB. Backblaze said its analysis covered more than 341,000 production drives and excluded drives that failed before their first day in production.

Those are observations about Backblaze’s fleet, not a failure-rate guarantee for a retail drive, another operator’s environment or a particular model. Its Drive Stats methodology and dataset overview describes a program that has published HDD and SSD annualized failure statistics since 2013. Fleet statistics can inform operational planning, but they do not remove the need for redundancy, monitoring, backups and a recovery plan.
How to decide which AI data belongs on HDD
- Classify the data by access pattern. Separate frequently queried or latency-critical data from bulk inputs, retained source data and infrequently accessed datasets.
- Set measurable targets. Specify acceptable latency, required throughput and ingestion rate, concurrency, availability and recovery time for each workload.
- Test the pipeline, not just the drive. Measure the workload with its real controller, network, cache, parallelism and software configuration. Confirm that HDD reads do not starve training or preparation jobs.
- Calculate total cost for usable capacity. Include redundancy, power and cooling, rebuilds, operations and the cost of a missed service-level target—not only purchase price per raw terabyte.
- Place data in tiers and move it when its use changes. Keep hot paths on flash where needed, use HDD for suitable bulk data, and reserve archive media for data whose retrieval delay is acceptable.
There is no evidence here for a specific personal NAS drive recommendation or a single configuration that suits every AI workload. The storage decision depends on the workload’s measured access pattern and service-level target.
