What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Hackers may take over an email or social media account so they can use its owner’s existing trust with friends, customers, or colleagues. From that familiar account, they can send malicious links, make fake requests for money, or try to steal personal information. The FTC lists identity theft, malware distribution, and scams among possible uses of a hacked account; an unexpected message alone does not prove how an account was compromised—or even that it was.
Why use someone else’s account?
A message from a familiar person or business is more likely to get attention than one from a stranger. An attacker who controls an account can exploit that relationship: recipients may click a link, share sensitive information, or respond to an urgent plea they would otherwise question.

The FTC identifies several possible goals: stealing identities, spreading malware, and scamming other people. The exact motive varies, and these possibilities do not establish the cause of any particular incident. FTC guidance on hacked email and social media accounts explains the warning signs and recovery steps.

- Being unable to log in.
- Alerts about a password or username change you did not make.
- Sign-in notices from a device or location you do not recognize.
- Reports from contacts that you sent messages you did not send.
One clue does not establish exactly what happened. Treat suspicious messages as a reason to check the account’s security, especially if you also see unfamiliar sign-ins or account-detail changes.
What recipients should do with an unusual message
Do not click an unexpected link or send money or personal information in response to a surprising request. Verify it through a separate channel you already trust—for example, call the person or business using a number you already have, rather than one in the message. A message appearing in a familiar account is not, by itself, proof that its owner sent it.

What to do if your account is sending messages
Use the provider’s official recovery process. If you can still access the account, secure it and check for changes that could let someone retain access or misuse it. If you cannot log in, go directly to the provider’s recovery instructions rather than relying on links in an unexpected message.

- Change the account password. Choose a strong password you do not reuse elsewhere.
- End other sessions. Sign out other devices or sessions using the provider’s available security controls.
- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) if offered. It adds a verification step beyond the password.
- Check recovery details. Make sure the recovery email address and phone number belong to you.
- Inspect account activity. For email, check forwarding rules and sent and deleted folders. For social accounts, check posts, messages, and unfamiliar contacts.
- Warn affected contacts. Tell people who may have received suspicious messages not to click links or respond to requests for money.
These steps follow the FTC’s account-recovery guidance. The exact controls and recovery screens vary by provider.

Why email accounts need particular care
An email inbox may receive password-reset messages for other services. If someone else can read those messages, they may be able to target accounts connected to that address. Use a unique password for email, and enable 2FA where available.
CISA explains that MFA can make it harder for an attacker to access systems even when passwords have been compromised. Its “More than a Password” guidance also urges organizations to plan for FIDO. A FIDO2 security key can be an option on services that support security-key sign-in; support varies, so check the provider’s options and keep a secure recovery method available if a device or key is lost.

If the account belongs to a business
A compromised business account and someone impersonating a business are related but distinct risks. If a business discovers impersonation, the FTC says it should warn customers promptly. If an account or device is compromised, change affected passwords; if a device is found to be infected with malware, FTC business guidance says to disconnect it from the network. See the FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance and its guidance on recognizing business impersonators.
Recovery screens and supported authentication methods differ across services. These steps address the warning signs and response options described by the FTC and CISA; they cannot identify how a specific account was accessed.
