Growing contractors may evaluate construction-specific finance software when their accounting workflow cannot reliably show job costs, work-in-progress (WIP), contract billing, or reconciled project data. Growth alone is not a reason to switch: Intuit says QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced include Projects features for job costing and project profitability, so the first step is to test the plan and setup already in use against the company’s actual requirements.
What contractors need their finance workflow to show
Construction finance often has to connect the general ledger to the status of individual jobs. That can mean tracking labor, materials, equipment, and subcontract costs against a job budget; monitoring progress billing and change orders; accounting for retainage; and producing WIP information that finance staff can explain and reconcile.

Sage describes these capabilities in its construction finance materials, including budget-versus-actual reporting, progress and milestone billing, WIP, retainage, and change-order billing. These are useful requirements to assess, not proof that every contractor needs Sage or that QuickBooks cannot support any of the same processes. Sage construction finance capabilities

Why a contractor may consider moving off QuickBooks
Job costs are not visible at the level or speed needed
A contractor may need to see actual labor, material, equipment, and subcontract costs beside a job’s budget while work is underway. If the current process makes those figures late, difficult to reconcile, or too coarse to guide decisions, it is reasonable to compare systems with construction-focused job-cost reporting.

WIP and billing are hard to keep aligned
Contract billing can involve progress or milestone schedules, retainage, approved change orders, and the relationship between work performed and amounts billed. A system evaluation is warranted when finance staff cannot consistently produce and explain the relevant WIP and over- or under-billing picture from the existing workflow.
Project and finance information relies on duplicate entry
Some contractors want operational project data to flow into accounting rather than being re-entered or reconciled by hand. Sage markets an integration between Sage Intacct Construction and Procore as a way to connect finance and project operations. That is a vendor-described offering, not independent evidence of integration quality; confirm exactly which records move, which platform owns them, and how exceptions and reconciliation work in your environment. When staying on QuickBooks may make sense
QuickBooks should not be dismissed as having no construction functionality. Intuit says QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced include Projects features for job costing and project profitability. A contractor using either plan should establish whether Projects is configured and whether its reports and processes meet the firm’s real needs before treating migration as the answer. The practical decision is whether a demonstrable control or workflow gap remains after checking the current plan and setup. If project profitability is visible, contract billing is handled reliably, and project-to-finance data is reconciled without undue friction, company growth by itself does not establish a need to move.
Compare systems against the work the contractor actually does
Use a requirements-first evaluation rather than assuming that a construction label guarantees a better fit. Sage describes Sage Intacct Construction and Sage 100 Contractor as construction offerings; confirm current modules, scope, and suitability with the vendor. The available product information here is primarily from Sage and Intuit, so it is not a complete market comparison. Sage construction finance capabilities

What the available adoption figure does—and does not—show
Associated Builders and Contractors’ 2021 technology report identified QuickBooks (29%), Sage (22%), and Deltek plus ComputerEase (12%) as the top three choices among respondents for accounting and billing software. These are historical respondent figures from that report, not current market shares; the surfaced result does not establish a sample size. They show that multiple products were named by respondents, but cannot determine which system is best for a particular contractor. Associated Builders and Contractors’ 2021 technology report
