When Google Maps reads a turn-by-turn direction over a podcast, the podcast often gets quieter rather than pausing. On Android, this is usually audio ducking: the system lowers the volume of the audio that is already playing so the navigation prompt can be heard. Google’s Maps settings control how loud directions are and which speaker they play through, but Google’s Maps help pages do not describe a switch that turns ducking off. In most cases, the behavior is decided by the podcast app’s handling of audio focus, so that is where a permanent change has to be made.
Why the podcast dips instead of pausing
Android manages sound through a concept called audio focus. Only one app holds focus for the main audio output at a time. When another app needs to speak briefly, such as a navigation prompt, it requests focus for a short period. Android’s developer guidance describes this kind of brief request as a transient one, and transient requests are the case where automatic ducking applies. The system lowers the volume of the app that already holds focus so the prompt can be heard over it.

Automatic ducking was introduced in Android 8.0 (API 26). Android’s current “Manage audio focus” guide in the Android Developers documentation addresses how apps should respond. It states:

The guide suggests that a spoken-audio app can pause instead of ducking. Podcasts are spoken audio, so a well-designed podcast app may pause for a prompt; an app that does not handle focus this way will keep playing at reduced volume. The same behavior can appear with other navigation apps, and it is not specific to Google Maps.
Users have reported this exact complaint for years. A 2020 thread in the Google Maps Community, titled “How to get rid of audio ducking?”, describes the podcast lowering in volume during directions rather than pausing. That thread is useful as a record of user experience, but it is not current product documentation.

What Google Maps settings can and cannot change
Maps has several audio controls, and they solve different problems. None of the Google help pages we reviewed describe them as a way to stop a podcast from ducking.

These settings fix navigation problems: directions that are too quiet, muted, or playing from the wrong speaker. They do not change how your podcast app reacts when Maps speaks. If your podcast drops in volume, first confirm that the direction itself is audible and correctly routed, then move on to the podcast app.

Fixing navigation audio on Android
Follow these steps while parked. Menu labels can change between Maps versions, so match the wording to what your screen shows.
- Start a route and look at the sound control on the navigation screen. If it shows Maps is muted, change it to Sound.
- Tap your profile picture or initial, then choose Settings → Navigation → Guidance volume, and select Louder.
- For car speakers, pair the phone with the car over Bluetooth, set the car stereo’s source to Bluetooth, and turn on Play voice over Bluetooth in Maps’ Navigation settings. For phone-speaker output, turn that option off.
- Tap Play test sound to confirm that the direction is audible through the route you chose.
- If you hear chimes instead of spoken directions, connect to the internet, request directions, and keep Maps open while the voice directions download.
After these steps, a direction that was inaudible should be audible. If the podcast still dips while the direction plays at a normal level, the cause is ducking, and the fix belongs in the podcast app.

Fixing navigation audio on iPhone and iPad
Google’s help page for iPhone and iPad covers Maps’ own navigation sound and Guidance volume controls, along with Bluetooth and USB routing. The Android audio-focus explanation above is not described in these iOS instructions, so do not assume the same mechanism applies on iOS.
- Check the sound state and Guidance volume in Maps’ navigation settings before you start a route.
- For Bluetooth car audio, pair the phone, select Bluetooth as the car’s source, and enable Play voice over Bluetooth.
- If Bluetooth directions are hard to hear, turn off Play voice over Bluetooth so Maps plays audio from the phone speaker.
- For USB, follow the USB steps on Google’s iPhone and iPad page. The steps differ depending on whether Bluetooth or USB carries the car’s audio, so do not mix the two sets of instructions.
Changing the podcast side of the problem
If the podcast drops in volume during a prompt, the setting that controls it is in your podcast app, if the app offers one at all. Setting names vary, and some apps offer no control. Look in the playback or audio section for options related to interruptions, audio focus, ducking, or pausing when other audio plays. Choose the option that pauses playback during prompts, if your app has one.

To check how your setup behaves, start a podcast, begin a route with a spoken direction, and note whether the podcast lowers in volume or pauses. Test on the same route and audio path you normally use, since the car’s head unit, Android Auto, or Bluetooth connection can change the result.

What the evidence does and does not establish
- Android documents automatic ducking and advises spoken-audio apps to pause rather than duck. This is guidance for app developers, not a universal user setting.
- Google’s Maps help pages describe navigation volume, sound, and routing controls. They do not describe an option to disable podcast ducking.
- Behavior can differ by phone platform, Maps version, podcast app, and car audio setup. A fix that works on one combination may not work on another.
- We found no published figure on how many users see this behavior, so the problem’s prevalence is unknown.
