Why Gold Prices Differ Between Karats, Dealers, and Online Trackers

Gold prices can mean a purity-adjusted metal value, an online reference, a dealer’s selling price, or a buyback bid. Learn how to compare like with like.

Gold prices differ because people may be comparing different things: the amount of pure gold in an item, a tracker’s reference calculation, a dealer’s selling price, or the cash a dealer will pay to buy it. To make a fair comparison, match purity, weight, currency, time, and transaction terms.

Why is the gold price different for 18K and 24K?

Karat measures gold purity, not weight. Weight is measured in grams or troy ounces; karatage describes the proportion of gold in an alloy. The World Gold Council explains that 18K gold is 75% gold and gives typical 22K yellow gold as 91.7% gold.

For a rough contained-metal comparison, multiply a pure-gold reference price per unit of weight by the item’s gold fraction. If the reference is per gram, an 18K gram is approximately 0.75 times the 24K reference per gram; a 22K gram is approximately 0.917 times that reference. This estimates the fine-gold content only. It does not calculate a finished jewelry price or guarantee a resale offer.

Purity marks are conventions subject to market rules and tolerances. The Council notes that 24K is commonly marked .999, while practical refining may reach .9999, and 14K is commonly marked .585 even though 14/24 is approximately .5833. Legal minimums and accepted tolerances vary by market. Alloys also contain other metals that can affect durability and color; those differences do not create a single universal price adjustment.

Why do online gold price websites show different prices?

A tracker’s number is a reference calculation produced from particular data, timing, units, currency conversions, and purity assumptions. For example, the World Gold Council’s interactive chart uses price data supplied by FastMarkets, quotes in US dollars, and converts to other currencies using the exchange rate at or near the time. It offers different currencies, units, and historical frequencies. Gold-Rates.org says it retrieves gold and foreign-exchange data from the GoldPriceZ API. Different disclosed data pipelines do not by themselves show that either tracker is wrong.

  • Observation time and refresh: Prices can move between observations. Gold-Rates.org says it displays the last cache refresh, serves cached data, and may retain the previous successful observation if an update fails.
  • Currency conversion: A local-currency value depends on both the gold reference and the exchange rate. The Council says it uses an exchange rate at or as close as possible to the time; Gold-Rates.org says currency refreshes run in a rotating queue, so different markets may update at slightly different times.
  • Weight unit: Make sure both displays use the same unit. The Council chart offers ounce, gram, kilogram, tonne, tael, and tola. A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams, not the ordinary ounce.
  • Purity assumption: One tracker may show a pure-gold reference while another calculates a lower-karat equivalent. Gold-Rates.org describes its other-karat calculation as 24K price × karat / 24.
  • Included costs: A reference may be a spot-based metal value rather than a retail price. Gold-Rates.org says its reference values normally exclude tax, making charges, dealer spreads, refining costs, assay fees, brand premiums, and collectible value. Its city pages are not guarantees that local shops offer that rate.

Before treating a discrepancy as an error, align the data source, observation time, currency, unit, purity, and what the figure includes. If the values still differ materially, check each provider’s stated methodology and refresh time.

Why is a jeweler charging more than the gold price online?

An online reference is not necessarily an executable offer to buy a physical item. A dealer’s customer price can start from contained-metal value and add a product premium and transaction costs. Depending on the item and terms, those may include fabrication, distribution, inventory, payment, delivery, insurance, verification, and operating costs. A jewelry price may also reflect product features beyond the gold content.

Is the gold spot price what I will pay or receive?

Usually, no. Spot is a wholesale reference, not automatically the price a customer pays or receives for a physical item. GoldObserve’s guide to dealer premiums distinguishes the dealer ask—the price a customer pays—from the dealer bid—the amount the dealer pays a customer. The ask and bid are two sides of a transaction, and purchase and delivery costs can widen the round-trip difference.

For resale, a dealer may base a jewelry or scrap offer on estimated recoverable fine gold, less processing and other costs. Stones, solder, and non-gold components can affect what is counted. The result depends on the dealer’s terms and examination of the item; do not assume that a design or labor charge will be recovered.

How to compare a tracker price with a dealer quote

  1. Record the reference: Note the tracker or data source and the observation or refresh time.
  2. Match the basis: Use the same currency and exchange-rate context, weight unit, and stated purity. Record the fine-gold content used in the estimate.
  3. Identify the type of price: Label the figure as a reference metal value, dealer ask, or dealer bid. These are not interchangeable.
  4. List additional charges: Check for making charges, tax, premium, assay or testing fees, shipping, insurance, and payment fees.
  5. For resale, pin down the offer: Confirm the exact item and condition, buyback formula, quote expiry, and settlement timing.

A scale can help check an item’s gross weight, but it cannot establish purity or recoverable fine-gold content. A consumer scale is not an assay tool.
