A vision model can recognize a product and still misread which way it is facing. OpenAI’s API vision guide explicitly warns that “The model may misinterpret rotated or upside-down text and images.” A prompt alone is therefore not a dependable way to correct every product photo: file-display rotation and the product’s intended visual orientation are separate problems.
Two different meanings of “rotated”
File or display orientation
A JPEG can contain EXIF orientation metadata indicating how software should display its stored pixels. If an application ignores that value, a photo may appear sideways or upside down even though the camera recorded the intended view. OpenAI’s vision documentation says models do not process original filenames or metadata, so an application should not assume the model will use a file’s EXIF value. Semantic uprightness
Even after pixels are displayed consistently, an application may need to decide whether the object itself is shown in the intended orientation. EXIF does not answer that question: it describes image display orientation, not whether a particular product’s top, bottom, front, or intended face is correctly positioned. A clearly upside-down bottle may be straightforward to classify; a flat-lay, an unfamiliar object, or an item with no obvious top may not have one unambiguous “upright” view.

Why a general-purpose model can get it wrong
Rotation is a documented vision-model limitation, not just a vague concern about prompt quality. OpenAI’s guide specifically names rotated and upside-down text and images as cases a model may misinterpret. A model might identify a shoe correctly, for example, yet describe its heel as pointing upward after the image is turned. Correct object recognition does not prove that orientation judgment is reliable.

The input may also differ from the file an application starts with. The OpenAI guide documents image resizing and model-specific image-detail behavior; even “original” detail is subject to resizing limits. A workflow should not promise that the model receives untouched source pixels. That matters when orientation depends on small details or when later annotations must line up with the image actually analyzed.
Choose the method that answers the actual question

Build a product-photo orientation workflow
- Inspect image metadata before inference. Read supported orientation metadata and normalize pixel orientation if the pipeline requires consistent inputs. Do not rely on the vision model to inspect EXIF.
- Keep track of every transform. Record rotations and resizing so that boxes, crops, and annotations can be mapped to the image displayed to a user. AWS explains that bounding-box coordinates reflect image orientation; OpenAI documents input resizing. AWS image orientation and OpenAI image inputs.
- Define semantic labels for your catalog. Specify what “upright” means for each relevant product category. Include a distinct ambiguous or not-applicable outcome where the item has no visually obvious intended top or the composition does not establish one.
- Evaluate representative examples. Label a test set containing normal views, quarter-turns, upside-down images, mirrored images if relevant, diagonal camera tilt, flat-lays, and products whose intended orientation is not visually obvious. No accuracy rate established by the cited documentation can substitute for testing on the catalog and image styles the application will actually process.
- Use model output as a candidate, not an unquestioned correction. Request a constrained label and, if useful, a short rationale. Set a confidence threshold or route unclear cases for human review. If the added processing is acceptable, compare a prompt-only judgment with judgments on explicit quarter-turn variants; this is an engineering option, not a guaranteed improvement or a published benchmark.
- Validate downstream geometry. If an image is rotated or resized, apply corresponding coordinate transforms to existing boxes, crop coordinates, and annotations. Otherwise a correct orientation change can leave the metadata attached to the wrong part of the displayed image.
What AWS’s orientation field does—and no longer does
AWS states that support for estimating image orientation through Rekognition’s OrientationCorrection field ceased as of August 2021; values returned for that field are always null. Its documentation also explains that bounding boxes reflect image orientation, which remains relevant when an application rotates an image for display. Do not treat the field as a current source of automatic orientation estimates. AWS image-orientation documentation
