Why Gaming PCs Use More Electricity Under Load—and How Much It Matters

Games make a PC’s CPU and graphics card work harder, raising power draw. Measure your own idle and gaming use to estimate the energy and cost that matter for your setup.

A gaming PC uses more electricity under load because a demanding game makes its processor and graphics card do more work than they do while idle. The increase matters according to your measured power difference, time spent gaming, what equipment you include, and your local electricity rate—not a single universal gaming-PC figure.

Why does my gaming PC use more electricity under load?

When a game needs more processing and graphics performance, the CPU and GPU work harder. That raises the computer’s power draw compared with idle or routine desktop tasks. The European Commission Joint Research Centre reports that browsing and video streaming tend to have active consumption comparable to short idle, while high-speed graphics and CPU activity such as gaming can notably increase energy use at full load. This is a qualitative finding, not a wattage estimate for current gaming PCs. European Commission Joint Research Centre report.

In the report’s words: “Only activities that require high-speed performance of powerful graphic cards and CPUs (e.g. gaming) seem to notably increase the level of energy consumption when used at full load.”

How much does it cost to run a gaming PC?

There is no well-supported representative annual kWh or cost figure for gaming PCs without specifying the hardware, game, settings, usage hours, measurement boundary, and electricity tariff. Measure your own system, then calculate from the average draw and time used:

Average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours = kilowatt-hours (kWh)

Multiply the resulting kWh by the price per kWh on your electricity bill for an approximate cost. For example, if a meter showed an average of 400 W during a two-hour session, that session would use 0.8 kWh (400 ÷ 1,000 × 2). The 400 W is purely an illustrative assumption, not a typical gaming-PC reading. Taxes and time-of-use rates can change the actual charge.

Watts measure a rate of power at a moment or averaged over a period; kWh measure energy accumulated over time. A high draw for a few gaming hours has a different effect from leaving a game running for much of the day.

How to measure your gaming PC’s electricity use

  1. Use a true-power plug-in meter at the AC outlet. Measure both a representative idle period and a representative gaming session. The EPA’s archived test procedure describes AC-source measurement with a true-power meter; it does not validate any particular consumer meter. EPA Version 4.0 test procedure.
  2. Keep the measurement boundary consistent: either measure the PC alone both times, or include the monitor and peripherals in both measurements.
  3. Record the game, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate cap, session length, and whether the display and accessories are included. These details make comparisons more meaningful.
  4. Use the meter’s average watts or cumulative kWh for the period. Convert average watts to kWh with watts ÷ 1,000 × hours, then multiply by your bill’s price per kWh for an approximate cost.

The EPA document is an archived standard. Its old idle limits and categories are historical, not current thresholds for modern gaming desktops.

What changes the impact over a year?

  • Hours in each state: Gaming for a few hours and leaving a game running all day are different usage patterns. ENERGY STAR warns that a game left running in the background can keep a computer from sleeping, even when paused. ENERGY STAR computers guidance.
  • Measured power difference: Compare your own idle and gaming readings rather than assuming a general gaming-PC wattage range.
  • Equipment included: A PC-only reading will not account for the monitor or peripherals; include them if you want to estimate the whole setup.
  • Electricity tariff: Use the rate that applies to your home and the relevant time of use, where applicable.

Do not use a power supply’s rated capacity or component TDP as a substitute for wall-meter readings. Those figures answer different questions from the electricity drawn by a complete system in use.

Can power settings reduce electricity use?

ENERGY STAR says certified computers are expected to operate efficiently in Off, Sleep, and Idle modes and to include power-management features and efficient power supplies. Its computer page lists the specification effective date as October 2025. Enable sleep settings for inactivity if they suit your use; a game left running may prevent sleep even while paused.
