Why Games Look Pixelated: Causes and Settings to Check

Low render resolution, upscaling, display scaling, and intentional pixel art can all make games look pixelated. Here’s how to tell them apart and what to check.

Games often look pixelated or blurry because they are rendering below your display’s native resolution and then being enlarged. But the same appearance can come from intentional pixel-art design, scaling settings, or upscaling. Check the game’s render resolution first, then adjust scaling and image-quality features one at a time.

First, identify what “pixelated” means in your game

Players use “pixelated” to describe several different effects: obvious square blocks, jagged edges, a soft or smeared image, or fine details that seem to disappear. Those symptoms are not interchangeable, so notice what you actually see and whether it happens in one game or across several.

It may be the intended art style

Pixel-art and retro games deliberately use visible pixels. On a high-resolution display, enlarging their small source image can make the edges look soft if the scaling method blends neighboring pixels. Integer scaling instead enlarges each source pixel by a whole-number amount, preserving crisp edges while making the pixel blocks larger. NVIDIA notes that pixel-art games scaled to fit higher-resolution displays can appear blurry; Microsoft describes integer scaling as a way to retain a crisp, pixelated look.

It may be a new image-quality issue

If a game that used to look clear has changed, or several unrelated games now look blocky or soft, treat that as a configuration clue rather than assuming the style is intentional. “Pixelated” alone does not identify the cause: a low-resolution image enlarged to fit is different from jagged edges or blur caused by other image processing.

Check the game’s rendering resolution

A game’s output resolution and its render resolution are not always the same. When the game renders fewer pixels than the display shows, it must enlarge that image, which can reduce apparent detail. Microsoft advises looking for “Resolution” or “Render resolution” in the game’s Graphics or Display settings. Most games with Fullscreen or Exclusive fullscreen modes let players change render resolution in-game, but labels and available controls vary.

  1. Open the game’s Settings, then look under Graphics or Display.
  2. Find Resolution, Render resolution, Resolution scale, or a similarly named control.
  3. Compare the selected value with the display’s native resolution, and try native rendering if performance allows.
  4. For a borderless-windowed game that has no effective in-game output-resolution control, check the operating system’s display resolution and any resolution controls the game provides for your device.

Review render scale and upscaling

A render-scale setting below 100% typically means the game is producing an image at less than the display’s full resolution before enlarging it. This can improve performance, but the result may look less detailed. If the game offers a render scale or resolution scale, compare its current value with native rendering and any higher-quality upscaling modes available.

Upscaling reconstructs or processes an image rendered at a lower resolution so it can fill a higher-resolution display. It can be a useful performance trade-off, but it does not guarantee the same detail as rendering every pixel at native resolution. Fine text and interface elements may be affected. Microsoft says its Auto SR feature is limited to supported devices and resolutions and can affect fine text or UI; if it makes a particular game look worse, turn it off or select another supported resolution.

NVIDIA describes Image Scaling as spatial and non-temporal, while DLSS can use temporal data and AI. These are vendor descriptions of different approaches, not a guarantee that one mode will look best in every game. Compare the options available on your system in the same scene, paying attention to small text as well as the overall image.

Choose how the image fits the display

When a game’s image does not match the display’s aspect ratio or resolution, the display or graphics software has to fit it somehow. The scaling choice affects the image’s shape and whether the screen is filled.

  • Preserve aspect ratio: Keeps the original proportions. If the image’s shape does not match the screen, unused areas such as side bars may remain.
  • Full panel: Stretches the image to fill the display. A non-native image may look distorted because its proportions change.
  • Integer scaling: Enlarges each source pixel by a whole-number factor where supported. This is often suitable for pixel art when crisp, visible pixel blocks are desired.

AMD documents preserve-aspect-ratio and full-panel scaling as options with those respective trade-offs. Which mode is available depends on your display, graphics software, and game.

Use sharpening and supersampling selectively

Sharpening can make softened edges appear clearer, but it is not the same as restoring all the detail lost when a game starts with a low-resolution image. AMD describes Radeon Image Sharpening as a way to restore clarity softened by other effects. If you try it, compare the result in a scene with both fine detail and text; stronger-looking edges do not necessarily mean more source detail has returned.

Virtual Super Resolution, AMD’s name for a supersampling feature, lets compatible games render above the display’s native resolution and then downscale the image. It can change the appearance of edges, but it also asks the system to render more pixels and may affect performance. Availability depends on hardware, software, and game support, so it is an optional experiment rather than a universal fix.

Use a controlled comparison to find the cause

  1. Choose a repeatable scene with sharp edges, small text, and fine detail.
  2. Record the current resolution, render scale, upscaling mode, scaling behavior, and sharpening setting.
  3. Change one setting at a time, then compare the same scene. Changing several options together makes it harder to tell which one affected the image.
  4. Keep the setting that improves the specific symptom without making text, proportions, or performance unacceptable.

If the issue continues across games, note the game and platform, the display’s native resolution, each game’s resolution and render scale, active upscaling or sharpening features, and any recent display or driver changes. Those details help distinguish a game-specific setting from a broader configuration change; the appearance alone cannot establish which one is responsible.

Do not assume you need new hardware

Resolution, render-scale, and scaling settings are the first checks because they can change the image without replacing equipment. A new monitor, graphics card, or cable is not a general remedy for pixelated games: whether hardware is involved depends on the particular device, connection, and symptom. Establish a specific limitation or fault before considering a purchase.
