But attention is not proof of demand, and copying a successful game does not guarantee success. The useful response is to treat a trend as a hypothesis, then test whether it fits your players, your team, your budget, and a clear reason to choose your game.
Why do game studios chase trends?
A successful game is highly visible evidence: players are spending time on it, and its format may look commercially attractive. For a studio making decisions under competitive and financial pressure, that signal is hard to ignore. A studio may reasonably ask whether a similar audience exists for its own project, whether a familiar format could reduce some uncertainty, or whether the idea deserves further investigation.

Those are plausible reasons to pay attention, not proof that copying a hit works. The available evidence does not establish how many studios change direction because of hype, how often they do so, or whether trend-following improves a game’s odds. A 2015 paper by Saiqa Aleem, Luiz Fernando Capretz, and Faheem Ahmed, Empirical Investigation of Key Business Factors for Digital Game Performance, supports the broader point that business factors matter to game performance. Its accessible abstract does not provide a trend-chasing success rate.

Market awareness and imitation are different decisions. Awareness means noticing a signal and investigating what it might imply for your players and business. Imitation means treating another game’s visible success as a design brief, without establishing why its players would want your version or whether your studio can make and support it. The first can inform a decision; the second skips the questions that make the decision useful.

The commercial signal is not the whole market
A hit can indicate that some players value a particular experience. It does not, by itself, show how many players remain unserved, how durable their interest will be, or whether they want another game built around the same idea. Nor does it show whether your studio has the resources or distinctive strengths to compete. A category can have genuine demand and still be hard to enter.
There is also a timing problem. By the time a format is widely discussed, other teams may already be responding to the same signal. Familiarity may make a concept easier to explain, but it can also mean that players already have many alternatives. Scott Hartsman, a game industry veteran interviewed by the Game Developers Conference (GDC), framed the competition in terms of players’ finite attention: “There has to have something super compelling about it, because people essentially have an infinite number of choices for what to do with their free time.” Treat this as an experienced developer’s observation, not a measured law about every game or genre.
What do studios do when growth and uncertainty collide?
Unity Technologies’ 2025 Unity Gaming Report describes a range of reported approaches to business uncertainty. Its figures below come from a Cint survey of 300 developers, fielded in 2024. They describe the choices respondents reported; they do not prove that a tactic will work for every studio.

|---|---|
| Using efficiency tools | 45% |
| Focusing on monetization and live operations | 24% |
| Relying on publisher support | 11% |
| Avoiding overhiring | 10% |
| Refusing to take on debt | 6% |
| Staying small | 4% |
The same report found that maximizing an existing game was the most commonly selected growth strategy in that sample. Respondents could also select new ideas in a different genre, new ideas in the same genre, or developing intellectual property (IP) into multiple games.
| Reported growth strategy | Share of surveyed developers |
|---|---|
| Maximizing an existing game | 62% |
| Developing new ideas in a different genre | 23% |
| Developing new ideas in the same genre | 10% |
| Developing IPs into multiple games | 5% |
These results offer context, not a prescription. The prominence of expanding an existing game is a reminder that growth need not mean abandoning a project for the latest format. Whether extension, a new concept, or a change of direction makes sense depends on the studio’s own audience, product, capabilities, and exposure. The survey does not establish why respondents made their choices or whether any one strategy produced better outcomes.
Unity’s report also lists keeping a project organized, in scope, and on time among developers’ reported challenges. That matters when considering a trend: a new feature, mode, or operating model competes for production capacity and can complicate a project that is already difficult to deliver. Justin Miersch, founder and game and level designer at 314 Arts, described one small-team advantage as being able to iterate or change systems faster than a large AAA organization with more approval steps. That is his account of a possible advantage, not evidence that small teams universally outperform large ones.

Why are so many studios making live-service games?
Live service is a useful case study because its perceived appeal and its costs are unusually connected. A game that continues after launch can offer opportunities for ongoing revenue and community-building. But the model also implies continuing work: updates, content, player communication, and decisions about monetization. A studio that sees the possible upside without assessing the ongoing obligations can mistake a business model for a shortcut.

GDC has described how some publishers promoted live service as the future during the pandemic, then later abandoned that approach. Its subsequent coverage examined the model through survey data, interviews, and conference talks. That history is a caution against treating confident industry narratives as permanent forecasts: a strategy can be widely promoted at one moment and reconsidered later.
GDC’s 2025 State of the Game Industry account drew on a survey of more than 3,000 developers and industry professionals; GDC reported a margin of error of ±2%. Its live-service figures describe those respondents, not all studios worldwide.
| Live-service response in the GDC 2025 survey | Share reported |
|---|---|
| Working on a live-service game | 16% of all respondents |
| Interested in working on one | 13% of all respondents |
| Not interested in working on one | 41% of all respondents |
| Working on one | 33% of surveyed AAA developers |
The survey account describes developers recognizing financial and community-building benefits while also expressing concern about declining player interest, creative stagnation, monetization practices, burnout, and market oversaturation. These are reported concerns, not proof that every live-service game experiences each problem. They do make clear why asking only whether the model could generate continuing revenue is incomplete: the team must also consider whether it can sustain the work and whether players have a reason to stay.
Competition for attention is part of the product decision
In his GDC interview, Hartsman called the live-service market saturated and argued that a new game must give players a compelling reason to leave an existing option. He also said that two or three leading games in some genres captured 66% to 80% of activity and revenue in those genres, while noting that genre segments differ. Attribute that range to Hartsman’s account; it is not a broad, independently verified statistic about the whole game market.

How can a studio tell whether a trend is worth following?
Use the trend to form a question, not to settle one. A decision should connect an observed signal to a particular audience, a differentiated experience, a feasible production plan, and a level of investment the studio can accept. The following framework is a practical decision aid inferred from the industry pressures and survey findings above; it has not been experimentally validated as a method for predicting commercial success.
1. Name the player and the unmet need
Replace “players want this” with a precise statement about who might want it and why. Which players are you trying to serve? What need, frustration, or desire does the trend appear to address for them? What evidence comes from those intended players, rather than from general industry attention or discussion among developers?
Separate enthusiasm for the category from interest in your proposed experience. A player may enjoy a genre but have no reason to try another entry. Your evidence should therefore help the team understand not just whether the broad format appeals, but what experience those players currently choose and what might make them consider a different one.
2. State what makes this game distinct
Write down why the proposed game would be compelling beside the options players already spend time on. The answer should describe a player-facing difference, not a production label such as “live service” or “the next big format.” It could be a particular audience, an experience the team can deliver especially well, or a clear response to a weakness players describe in their current choices. Do not assume that being first, familiar, or similar is enough.
Use Hartsman’s observation as a challenge to the concept: what makes the game worth choosing? If the team cannot answer without referring to a competitor’s success or the market’s excitement, that is a sign to do more discovery before committing scope.
3. Check the team and the operating model
Compare the idea’s actual workload with your team’s skills, capacity, and appetite for sustained work. A direction that requires frequent content, ongoing maintenance, community engagement, or repeated monetization decisions may demand a different operating rhythm from a game built primarily for a defined launch and completion. Identify that work before treating the headline opportunity as the project’s central promise.

Also account for the organization that must deliver it. A small team may value rapid iteration; a larger team may have different coordination and approval needs. Miersch’s example illustrates that production structure can affect the cost of changing direction, but it does not make one team size inherently better. Ask what your particular team can build, revise, and support without undermining the rest of its commitments.
4. Make the financial exposure explicit
Estimate what must be invested before the idea can be judged, what needs to be true for that investment to make sense, and which costs continue after launch. Separate reversible choices from commitments that are difficult to undo, such as expanding a team or building systems that lock the project into a long-running service model. Unity’s survey shows respondents reporting several approaches to uncertainty, from efficiency measures to avoiding debt; it does not identify one universally correct financial posture.
Write down the assumptions that carry the most risk. For example, distinguish assumptions about the audience from assumptions about production time or continued operating capacity. This makes it easier to see whether the concept depends on a single fragile belief or on several separate claims that need evidence.
5. Design a small test that can reject the idea
Choose the least expensive test that can address the most important uncertainty. Depending on the question, that might involve showing a concept to intended players, testing a core interaction, or examining whether a proposed service cadence is feasible for the team. A test is useful only if its result could change the decision; a demonstration built solely to confirm the team’s enthusiasm is not a meaningful stop signal.
Before running it, define what result would justify further investment, what result would lead you to revise or stop, and when the team will decide. The thresholds should follow the project’s own goals and constraints rather than a made-up industry benchmark. This is disciplined experimentation, not a guarantee that the eventual commercial outcome can be predicted from a small test.

Ask whether each trend-inspired addition solves an identified player problem or merely responds to the fact that competitors, investors, or industry conversations are discussing it. Record what the team is adding, what it is delaying or removing to make room, and which evidence would cause it to reconsider. Set a review point so a temporary market signal does not silently become a permanent commitment.
Best Value
Scope discipline matters because even a promising idea has an opportunity cost: time spent pursuing it cannot be spent on another feature, audience, or improvement. If the proposed change cannot be connected to a player need or a testable business assumption, hold it outside the committed plan until that connection exists.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a trend with other real options
When deciding whether to follow a signal, compare it with the actual alternatives available to the studio—not with an imaginary choice between chasing the trend and missing the market entirely. An existing game may have room to grow; a new idea may serve a different audience; a modest experiment may answer a key question before a major pivot. Unity’s survey suggests that developers reported different growth strategies, with expansion of an existing game most frequently selected in that sample, but it does not establish which alternative your studio should choose.
Use a short decision record to make the comparison concrete:
- Audience evidence: What has the intended audience shown or said that supports this direction?
- Distinctiveness: What gives players a reason to choose this game over the alternatives they already have?
- Production and operations: What work is required to build, maintain, update, and support the experience?
- Financial exposure: How much investment is at risk, and which assumptions have to hold for the project to remain viable?
- Reversibility: Which commitments can be changed after a test, and which would be costly to undo?
- Decision trigger: What observation would make the team proceed, adapt, or stop, and when will it review that evidence?
Do not treat market attention alone as evidence of demand, or demand as a prediction of your game’s success. The decision record is useful because it exposes what the team knows, what it is assuming, and what it can still learn before increasing its commitment.
What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you
The Unity and GDC surveys are snapshots of reported responses in particular samples and years. Unity’s strategy figures came from a 2024 Cint survey of 300 developers, published in its 2025 report. GDC’s live-service findings came from its 2025 survey of more than 3,000 developers and industry professionals. They help describe how respondents viewed growth, risk, and live service; they do not establish that a market pattern will persist or that a tactic caused success.
Likewise, Hartsman’s comments provide an industry veteran’s perspective on competition and live-service saturation, including his qualified account of concentration in some genre segments. They should not be generalized into a universal market share estimate. The 2015 Aleem, Capretz, and Ahmed paper supplies broader business context, but its accessible abstract does not answer whether copying a trend improves commercial performance.
That distinction is useful in practice. Survey findings can prompt better questions—such as whether extending an existing game deserves consideration, or whether a live-service model’s operating demands match the team—but they cannot choose the answer for an individual project. Make the decision from the project’s own evidence and constraints, and preserve the uncertainty where evidence is not yet available.
