Publishers move or avoid release dates near major blockbusters because a game competes for more than buyers: it competes for players’ time, attention, press coverage, creator schedules, storefront visibility and discretionary spending. Leaving a crowded window is a bid to give a title more room to be noticed—not a guarantee of better sales.
What publishers are trying to avoid
Attention and visibility
A major release can dominate headlines, social feeds, streaming and creator calendars, and promotional space on digital storefronts. That can make a smaller game harder to discover even if the two games are not direct genre rivals. As Devolver executive Nigel Lowrie put it, the publisher did not want fans to have to choose between its games and “some other excellent games.” (GameSpot, 2023)

Play time and spending
Players have finite leisure time and budgets. Someone absorbed in a large game may postpone buying another, and a full-price release can face competition from discounts on recently released titles, especially around Black Friday. Lowrie described the goal as giving a game “the oxygen it needs to have the best chance to succeed,” including avoiding a big release or sale. That is a scheduling rationale, not evidence that every moved game would have sold better on another date.

In a crowded season, publishers may need to spend more to be heard. A launch also demands interviews, creator coordination, patch work and customer support. Those operational pressures are distinct from audience competition: a date may move because a game is not ready or because certification is still underway, rather than because another title is coming out.

What release-timing data says—and what it cannot prove
Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report 2025 examined PC, PlayStation and Xbox data from 37 markets, excluding China and India, for 2021–2024. It found that nearly half of single-player releases clustered in the August–November period. The Game Business reported Newzoo’s dataset as 155 AAA single-player games: 45% launched between mid-August and mid-November, 23% in February and March, and 14% in Q2.
Newzoo reported that August–November releases performed 34% worse on average than February–May releases; after excluding Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy, the late-year group still underperformed by 25%. These are averages and associations within that dataset, not a forecast for an individual game or proof that moving a launch causes improved results. The figures are affected by which games launched in each period, blockbuster outliers and the report’s platform and geographic scope. (The Game Business’ summary of Newzoo’s findings)

The same coverage said average player counts in the first three months for April–June releases were comparable to those for September–November releases. That supports considering quieter months; it does not establish that Q2 is universally better. Genre, platform, franchise strength, price, marketing and post-launch support all shape a game’s result.

Not every competing release is equally relevant. A game in the same genre, on the same platform and aimed at the same players is a closer rival than a title with a distinct audience. A peer-reviewed 2016 study by Benjamin Engelstätter and Michael R. Ward found that release timing responds to competition within product niches, including genre, age rating, platform, publisher and release cohort. Its historical data suggested that sales decay quickly after opening weekend and that publishers tend to avoid weeks when their niche is already well served. The authors estimated that a one-week delay could improve revenue for a title facing above-average competition; that historical estimate should not be treated as a universal effect for current releases. A date change also trades one set of risks for another. A supposedly quiet window can acquire a surprise hit—such as Palworld or Helldivers 2—or a game can move into a different crowded period. A blockbuster may even bring extra attention to a related category rather than crowd it out. The useful question is not simply whether another major game is launching, but whether its audience, platform and buying moment overlap with the title in question.

Making room in a crowded September
Devolver executives said they moved an unnamed game by a couple of weeks to get away from a crowded September 2023 cluster that included Mortal Kombat 1, Party Animals, Payday 3 and Lies of P. They described wanting their game to have space and avoiding a situation where fans had to choose among games they wanted to play. The example illustrates a calendar decision; it does not establish that every release in the cluster lost sales or that the moved game necessarily gained them. (GameSpot, 2023)

Betting that audiences do not overlap
Some publishers may deliberately keep a date beside a blockbuster if they expect little audience overlap. In September 2026, Hooded Horse CEO Tim Bender said the PC management sim Blacksmith Master was deliberately scheduled for GTA 6’s launch date because he expected the audiences to differ. He said, “GTA will have absolutely no effect on Blacksmith Master’s release.” That is the publisher’s strategic assessment of one game, not a measured result or a general rule. (GamesRadar+, September 26, 2026)
Blockbusters can also influence plans before a date is final. In May 2025, former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij told Reuters that publishers had delayed announcing dates because releasing just before or after GTA 6 could diminish sales. His comment describes publisher caution around a major launch, not a confirmed effect on any specific game. (Reuters, May 12, 2025)
How to judge whether a release window is genuinely risky
A publisher weighing a date can compare the practical sources of overlap rather than treating every headline release as an equal threat:
- Audience: Do the games appeal to the same players, or are their genres and play styles distinct?
- Platform: Are they competing on the same storefronts and devices?
- Timing: Is the rival launching on the same day, in the same week, or merely in the same broad season?
- Competition density: How many relevant launches are already scheduled, and how prominent are they?
- Visibility and price: Will storefront placement and marketing be crowded, and will discounts make recent alternatives cheaper?
- Readiness and lifecycle: Is the game ready, and can the team support launch patches, updates and planned content? Does the timing fit seasonal sales or awards eligibility?
- Uncertainty: Could an unexpected hit reshape the supposedly open window?
A launch date is one part of a longer plan
Avoiding a blockbuster is a way to manage risk across attention, player time, marketing and sales—not a formula for success. Newzoo’s 2021–2024 findings challenge the assumption that the holiday season is automatically the strongest release period, while publisher examples show why audience fit and readiness can matter more than a calendar rule. Publishers also plan around what follows launch: discounts, downloadable content, updates, support and awards eligibility. A quieter date may offer room to compete, but it cannot substitute for a game that is ready and able to hold players’ interest.
