Leaving Upwork for email outreach trades a ready-made marketplace and platform features for direct control over whom you contact—and responsibility for finding prospects, sending compliant messages, and managing payment yourself. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on your own results; the available terms do not show that email outreach performs better.
What changes when you leave Upwork?
Upwork is a marketplace: you find posted jobs and submit proposals through a defined process. Email outreach is a channel, not a source of clients. You have to choose an audience, identify appropriate contacts, make a relevant offer, and track replies and follow-ups.

| Decision factor | Upwork | Email outreach |
|---|---|---|
| Where opportunities come from | Job posts on the platform; proposals are tied to specific jobs. | Prospects you identify and contact yourself. |
| Cost to pursue work | Connects may be required to submit proposals, and a freelancer service fee applies to contracts. See the cost details below. | Your time and any email infrastructure costs. No general cost estimate is established here. |
| Payment and trust | Upwork describes payment protections for eligible work, subject to its terms. | Email itself provides no payment protection. Your contract and payment arrangements matter. |
| Setup and responsibility | Prepare a proposal with terms, a cover letter, screening answers, and relevant samples or profile highlights. | Find suitable contacts, send accurate and relevant messages, and manage sender requirements and applicable rules. |
| How to judge results | Track time, costs, qualified conversations, paid work, revenue, and retention. | Track the same measures, including the time spent finding prospects and following up. |
There is no established head-to-head conversion or revenue statistic that shows one route is better. A fair comparison comes from your own records over a stated period, not from the mechanics of either channel alone.

Service fee
Upwork’s Help Center states that its freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. The rate is shown when you submit a proposal or receive an offer and is fixed when the contract begins. Upwork says the fee supports services such as payment protection, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, and business tools; that is the platform’s explanation, not an independent assessment of their value.

Connects
Connects are virtual tokens used to submit proposals and for certain visibility products. The number needed varies by job and can change while the job is posted, so check the job page rather than assuming each proposal costs the same. Upwork lists purchased Connects at $0.15 USD each; calculate your proposal spend from the number actually used and the price current when you buy them.
Proposal workflow and payment features
A proposal can include hourly or fixed-price terms, an estimated duration, a cover letter, screening answers, and relevant work samples or profile highlights. Upwork describes hourly payment protection when freelancers log time and meet the applicable requirements, and fixed-price protection when funds are released at milestones. These features are conditional on their terms, not an unconditional guarantee of payment.

What does email outreach require?
Prospecting and relevance
Choose a defined group of potential clients, identify contacts appropriate to approach, and explain why your offer fits their needs. Keep sender information accurate and subject lines non-deceptive. Google advises against buying email addresses or sending to people who did not sign up, and says it cannot guarantee that messages sent by email providers will pass Gmail’s spam filters. Do not treat impersonation or attempts to evade filters as a shortcut.

For senders sending more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts, Google states additional requirements: SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and one-click unsubscribe for marketing and subscribed messages. That threshold concerns Google’s Gmail sender requirements; it is not a universal legal definition of bulk email.
U.S. commercial email rules
For commercial email covered by U.S. CAN-SPAM guidance, the Federal Trade Commission says messages must use accurate header information and non-deceptive subject lines, identify advertising, include a valid physical postal address, and provide a clear way to opt out. Senders must honor opt-out requests within 10 business days. The FTC says both the company whose product is promoted and the company sending the email may be held responsible. These points describe U.S. guidance and are not a complete account of rules in other countries.

How can you tell whether the switch worked?
Compare both channels using the same measures and a consistent time window. Count the full acquisition effort, not just the time spent writing a proposal or sending an email.
- Time spent searching for work, researching prospects, preparing pitches, following up, and handling administration.
- Direct pursuit costs, including actual Connects used and any email infrastructure costs you incur.
- Qualified replies and conversations, rather than raw applications or messages sent.
- How many conversations turn into paid work, and the revenue and client retention that follow.
- Payment delays, disputes, and the time required to manage contracts and collections.
Those records can show which route worked better for your business during that period. They cannot, by themselves, prove that the channel caused the difference: the kinds of clients you pursued, your offer, and the time you spent also matter.
Who may prefer each route?
Upwork may suit you if
- You want to respond to posted projects rather than build a prospect list from scratch.
- You value a structured proposal workflow and are willing to account for Connects and the contract-specific service fee.
- You want to use platform payment features where the contract and your work meet their requirements.
Email outreach may suit you if
- You can identify a specific group of relevant prospects and tailor a truthful offer to them.
- You are prepared to manage sender setup, applicable compliance obligations, follow-ups, contracts, and payment arrangements.
- Your own tracking shows that direct prospecting produces worthwhile qualified conversations after accounting for the time and costs involved.
You do not have to treat the choice as permanent or all-or-nothing. A measured trial can compare both routes without assuming that a different acquisition channel will automatically bring more clients.
