The exact format, interruptions, catalog, and availability depend on the service and the country.
How ad-supported streaming pays for free content
Services can sell advertising around programs and use that revenue to help fund the content they offer. Tubi says its ad breaks help pay for movies and shows supplied by studio and independent partners; its Help Center describes the arrangement this way: “We stay free by showing short ad breaks during our movies and TV shows.” That is Tubi’s explanation of its own model, not a guarantee about every service’s ad schedule. Advertising is not necessarily a platform’s only source of income. Roku’s 2025 Form 10-K describes advertising-supported video, free ad-supported streaming television, and subscription services within The Roku Channel, and identifies digital advertising as a source of platform revenue. Free on-demand streaming and FAST channels are different
“Free streaming” can describe more than one viewing experience. The key distinction is whether you choose a specific title or tune into a scheduled channel.

FAST and AVOD are related but not interchangeable: FAST is scheduled and channel-like; AVOD is pick-a-title. Some apps offer both, so identify the section you are watching rather than assuming that every free streaming service is a FAST service.
What to expect when you press play
Ads are part of the free viewing arrangement
Expect advertising interruptions on ad-supported content. The service uses those breaks to monetize viewing and help pay for programming. A “free” label does not mean “ad-free,” and a paid subscription elsewhere in the same app may have different terms.

There is no dependable ad-minutes-per-hour rule across services
The available service descriptions do not establish a comparable ad schedule across platforms or titles. Tubi says it has substantially fewer ad minutes per hour than traditional broadcast or cable, but its cited Help Center page gives no numerical comparison. That is the company’s claim, not an independently established figure. Check the named service’s current terms if ad frequency is important to you; do not assume a fixed number of breaks or minutes.
Libraries change because content is licensed
Free services carry content from studios and other partners, and a title’s presence does not promise it will remain available. Tubi names MGM, Lionsgate, Paramount, and independent content providers among its partners. Catalogs can change, and what is available can differ by territory. “Free” may sit beside paid choices
Some platforms put free ad-supported programs, paid subscriptions, or both in the same app. Amazon Ads says that after Freevee was deprecated in early 2025, its free movies, shows, and FAST channels were incorporated into Prime Video and remained available with ads without requiring Prime. App branding and local availability can change, so check the current listing and the price shown for the specific content. Amazon Ads: What is Freevee?
Examples—and why location matters
Tubi
Tubi says its app and content are free to watch, with ad breaks supporting content from its partners. Its Help Center also says the service has no ad-free option at the time of that page’s wording. The Roku Channel
Roku’s 2025 Form 10-K reported more than 80,000 movies and TV shows and more than 500 FAST channels for The Roku Channel. Those are counts reported in that filing, not a guarantee of current catalog size. The filing says the service is available on Roku TV OS devices in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico. In the United States, Roku also lists access through its mobile app, web, Amazon Fire TVs, Samsung TVs, Google TV, and other Android TV OS devices. Prime Video and former Freevee programming
Amazon Ads says Freevee’s free ad-supported programming was incorporated into Prime Video after Freevee’s deprecation in early 2025, without requiring a Prime subscription to watch that free content. Look for the content’s price and ad label in your local app rather than assuming all Prime Video titles are free. Amazon Ads: What is Freevee?

Pluto TV
Availability can depend on how a service is distributed in a particular market. ACMA reports that Pluto TV is available in Australia exclusively through 10Play. Compare the actual viewing experience and access requirements, not just the word “free.” These checks help avoid surprises:
- Format: Decide whether you want to select a movie or show from an AVOD library, browse scheduled FAST channels, or use both.
- Content: Search for the specific title, genre, or channel you want. Libraries rotate and may differ by country.
- Ads: Check the service’s current information about interruptions and whether it offers any ad-free option. Do not infer a universal ad cadence.
- Availability: Confirm that the service works in your country and on your TV, phone, browser, or other device. You may already have a compatible smart TV or streaming app; a separate streaming device is not automatically required.
- Price: Distinguish free-with-ads content from a paid subscription with ads and from an optional paid add-on. Read the price shown for the title or channel before starting it.
How widely are FAST services used?
Survey and viewing figures can provide context, but they describe specific populations and measures rather than proving that every viewer uses these services. Amazon Ads reports that 7 out of 10 U.S. consumers used at least one FAST service, citing an Advertiser Perceptions custom study for Prime Video in 2024. The same Amazon Ads guide reports 98% growth in global FAST viewing hours from Q4 2023 to Q4 2024, citing Amagi’s Global FAST Report Edition 14, published in January 2025; that figure concerns viewing hours, not revenue or user numbers. In Australia, ACMA reported that 5% of adults had watched at least one FAST channel from Samsung TV Plus, Tubi, or Plex in the seven days before its June 2024 survey. Its report also estimated 640 FAST channels were available in Australia as of April 2024. Those figures are specific to the named services, period, and country.
