Foldable phones can turn a pocket-sized device into something closer to a small tablet, while foldable laptops expand a screen that is already large. That smaller practical leap—combined with high launch prices and setup friction on some designs—helps explain why foldable laptops have remained a niche product category even as Apple prepares its first foldable iPhone.
What Apple’s foldable iPhone changes
Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, describing it as the company’s first foldable iPhone. It has a 5.4-inch outer display for use while closed and a 7.6-inch inner display when opened. That arrangement preserves ordinary phone access on the outside while offering a larger workspace inside. Apple’s announcement also says iOS 27 adapts to the fold, with Split View for two apps side by side and the option to save app pairs.

Apple’s stated schedule calls for preorders to begin October 16, 2026, with availability starting October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, followed by 28 additional countries and regions on October 30. Those are announced dates and regions, not a claim that the device is already available everywhere. CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original”; that is Apple’s promotional characterization, not an independent assessment.

The screen-size jump is smaller in practical terms
A phone unfolds from a compact device into a much larger viewing surface. A laptop starts with a screen large enough for sustained work, so expanding it may feel more like an upgrade in workspace than a change in what the device can do. Ross Rubin, founder and principal analyst at Reticle Research, writes that moving from an approximately 13-inch Windows experience in clamshell mode to a 16- or 17-inch unfolded experience is “less dramatic.” His TechRadar analysis contrasts that with the more obvious transition from a pocketable phone to tablet-like space.

Some designs complicate the basic laptop routine
A conventional laptop’s screen and keyboard are already in place when it opens. Foldable-screen PCs can ask users to handle the keyboard differently to take advantage of the larger panel. TechRadar reports that Lenovo’s first ThinkPad X1 Fold could store its Bluetooth keyboard between the display halves, while the Gen 2 kept the keyboard separate in a protective case that also served as a stand. Such arrangements can enable different modes, but they add steps to a task that a standard clamshell handles simply.
High launch prices demand a stronger reason to switch
Early examples came with premium launch prices: TechRadar reports that the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED launched at $3,500 in 2022 and the HP Spectre Foldable PC at $5,000 in 2023. These are historical launch prices, not current offers. When a larger screen does not clearly transform a person’s workflow, a substantial premium is harder to justify.

What the laptop category has—and has not—shown
Foldable laptops are not absent, but the product pipeline described by TechRadar was sparse. In its September 26, 2026 account, the publication reported one foldable-screen laptop each from ASUS, Huawei, and HP, and two from Lenovo. It said Lenovo’s ThinkPad Fold 16 Gen 2 reached the market in November 2023 and characterized the pipeline as quiet. This is the inventory and market read reported in that article, not a definitive global product census or evidence of sales figures.
The format has potential advantages: a taller aspect ratio, portrait orientation, and a large screen in a more compact folded footprint. But those benefits have to outweigh practical compromises. TechRadar also points to rollable screens as a possible way to add display area without requiring keyboard repositioning. That is a design alternative, not proof that rollables have already solved the category’s adoption challenge.

Software helps, but does not settle the case
Software can make a folding screen more useful by changing how apps and windows behave across its positions. Apple says iOS 27 supports side-by-side apps and saved app pairs on the iPhone Duo. TechRadar notes that Windows work for foldable displays has included adapting preview behavior for dual-screen use. Neither software support nor a larger panel alone establishes strong demand: the device still has to make everyday tasks easier enough to offset its cost and handling differences.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The core difference is utility, not the hinge
Phones and laptops ask buyers to value different things. For a phone, unfolding can create a distinctly larger viewing and multitasking space without giving up a usable outer screen. For a laptop, the existing clamshell already offers a substantial display and ready-to-use keyboard; unfolding may expand the workspace, but can introduce more setup and cost. That makes foldable laptops a harder proposition to explain as a necessary upgrade, even when the hardware is impressive.
