Why Firestore Throws “Missing Index” Errors—and How to Fix Them

Firestore missing-index errors usually mean a query needs a composite index. Follow the error link, verify its scope and fields, and wait for the index build to finish.

In Firestore Standard edition, a missing-index error means the query needs an index that does not exist yet. Firestore does not fall back to scanning the collection for an unsupported Core query. The fastest fix is usually the link in the error: review the proposed index, create it, and wait until its status shows that the build is complete.

Why Firestore reports a missing index

Firestore uses indexes to serve queries. It creates basic single-field indexes automatically, but it does not create every possible combination of fields. A query that combines filters, range conditions, or ordering can therefore need a composite index that has not been configured. This required-index behavior applies to Core queries in Standard edition; Enterprise workflows differ, so do not assume the same indexing requirement across editions. See Firestore’s index overview and its Standard edition documentation.

The requirement is determined by the query’s shape, not just by the collection name. Index field modes and scope matter: ascending or descending modes support ordinary field comparisons and corresponding ordering, while array-contains mode supports array membership filters. A collection-group query needs a collection-group-scoped index. A document without a value for an indexed field is not included in that index, which can affect which records a query can return. A composite index can contain only one array field. Firebase’s index overview describes these behaviors.

Use the error link for the usual fix

  1. Open the complete error message. For an ordinary missing composite index, follow its generated link. Firebase says the link opens the console with the index information populated. Treat it as a proposal, then compare the collection, fields, modes, and scope with the query your application actually runs.
  2. Create the index. Submit the proposed definition if it matches the query. If the link is unavailable, open the Firestore Indexes tab in the console and add an index for the relevant collection and fields, choosing the required field modes and scope. For non-array and non-map fields, the management guide says to choose ascending or descending ordering even when that field is not used for ordering; this choice does not change equality-filter behavior.
  3. Wait for the build to finish. Creating an index includes building it against existing data. Check its status in the console; a submitted or building index is not yet a ready index. Firebase notes that creation can take a few minutes, depending on the query and index build. See the index management guide.

If index creation is rejected, check the account’s permissions. The management guide lists Datastore owner, index admin, editor, and owner roles, as well as a specific set of index permissions for custom roles. For a vector-index requirement, the error provides a Google Cloud CLI command rather than the usual console link.

Make the fix reliable for a team

Creating an index in the console is convenient for a quick repair. For a repeatable team workflow, keep index definitions in version control and deploy them with the application’s configuration.

  1. Use Firebase CLI with firestore.indexes.json to define indexes.
  2. Deploy index changes when appropriate with firebase deploy --only firestore.
  3. If your team manages infrastructure with Terraform, use that documented definition path instead.
  4. When someone changes an index in the console, update the local configuration too, so the committed definition reflects the live database.

Firebase documents the configuration format in its Firestore index reference and describes index management in the indexing guide.

If the error persists after creating an index

Work through the mismatch systematically. A plausible-looking index is not necessarily the index required by the request that failed.

  • Confirm the target. Verify which Firebase or Google Cloud project and which Firestore database the running application is using. Compare the error’s proposed configuration with the request the application actually sends.
  • Compare the full query shape. Check every filter and operator, range condition, ordering clause, and array filter. Confirm the target is a single collection or a collection group, and verify index scope and field modes.
  • Check index status. Confirm the index has finished building and backfilling; do not infer readiness from successful submission.
  • Recheck the edition. The steps here address the required-index behavior documented for Standard edition Core queries. Firestore Enterprise describes indexing as optional for Enterprise workflows; see its pipelines overview and native index overview.

Use Query Explain to investigate planning and performance

Query Explain can show how Firestore plans a supported polled query and which indexes it uses. Its default mode returns planner information without executing the query; analyze mode executes it and returns runtime and billing statistics. The guide says streaming queries are not yet supported. Explain is useful when investigating index selection or efficiency, but it does not replace creating a required index for a query that currently fails. Details are in the Query Explain guide.

Separate missing-index errors from index-design limits

Not every indexing problem is solved by adding another composite index. Firebase documents a maximum of 40,000 index entries per document and a maximum of one array field per composite index. Large arrays or maps can contribute to the entry limit. The index overview also recommends exemptions for fields that do not need indexing in relevant cases, including large unused values and some high-write sequential fields. These are index-design or index-build concerns, distinct from the ordinary missing-composite-index fix. See Firestore’s index overview.
