Start by checking whether the problem happens on one device or several, then compare Wi-Fi with a wired Ethernet speed test near the router. That comparison helps locate the bottleneck; it does not, by itself, prove the provider connection is healthy.
Why can a fiber connection feel slow?
A plan’s advertised or maximum speed is not a guarantee that every device will reach that speed, especially over Wi-Fi. The router, the device’s network hardware and software, distance, walls and other obstacles, radio interference, and simultaneous network use can all reduce the speed you observe. A slow website or app may also be a site-specific problem rather than a slow connection overall.

Before changing equipment, identify what is actually slow: download, upload, responsiveness, or connection stability. Those symptoms can point to different causes.
Start by narrowing down the symptom
- One device or several? If only one device is affected, its Wi-Fi adapter, software, browser, or background applications may be involved. If several devices are slow, check the router, network use, and provider status.
- Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both? Compare a wired test with Wi-Fi to see whether wireless coverage or the device’s Wi-Fi connection is contributing.
- Constant or time-specific? Note when the slowdown occurs and whether it coincides with heavy household use.
- Which symptom? Low download or upload speed, high latency, dropped connections, and one slow website are not interchangeable problems.
Check for an outage before changing your setup
Look for a local outage or service notice in your provider’s app or status page. The FCC consumer guide advises customers to ask their internet provider whether an outage or service disruption may be affecting speed and to seek troubleshooting help from the provider.

Run a useful wired speed test
A wired comparison reduces the effect of Wi-Fi signal strength and interference. It measures the path through your test device, Ethernet connection, and router to the service; it is a diagnostic clue, not proof that every part of the provider’s network is healthy.
- Connect a capable computer to a LAN port on the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy activity on that computer and, where practical, reduce other network use during the test.
- Run a reputable speed test. If results vary noticeably, repeat it.
- Record the date and time, test device, whether you used Ethernet or Wi-Fi, your location, and the download and upload results.
Check the whole test path before interpreting a low result: the computer and router ports, Ethernet cable, adapter, USB port if one is used, operating system, browser, and background applications can all constrain a measurement. The necessary capabilities depend on the plan and equipment.
Google Fiber’s Network Box instructions recommend connecting a computer by Ethernet before testing. For a GFiber 1 Gig plan in that setup, the provider says upload and download should be close to 1000 Mbps, while noting that computer type and age, browser, running applications, and other factors can lower the result. That is a provider- and setup-specific example, not a universal speed target for every fiber service or device.

If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow
A good wired result alongside a poor Wi-Fi result points toward wireless coverage, interference, or the Wi-Fi capability of a particular device. Try these checks before buying anything:
- Move closer to the router and test again. If speed improves, distance or obstacles may be limiting the signal.
- Place the router centrally, in the open and off the floor; avoid enclosing it in a cabinet or putting substantial obstacles between it and the devices you use.
- Compare affected devices. If older or less capable devices are slower than others in the same location, the limitation may be device-specific.
- Check for simultaneous network use that could affect performance.
- If you use a mesh extender, check that it has a good connection to the main router. Google Fiber’s Wi-Fi guidance suggests placing a wireless extender about halfway between the router and the farthest area needing coverage. An extender placed too far away may itself receive a weak upstream signal.
A mesh system is worth considering only when the wired connection is healthy and the evidence points to a coverage gap. It cannot fix an outage, low wired throughput, or a device whose port limits its speed.
If Ethernet is slow too
First check that the test device, router, cable, adapter, and ports can support the speed you expect. Close background applications, update device software or drivers where appropriate, and try another capable wired device if one is available. These checks can help distinguish a measurement or equipment limit from a problem that needs the provider’s attention.

For its multi-gig service guidance, Google Fiber discusses device, cable, adapter and port limits, recommends Cat 6 or higher in its example, and describes port requirements for its own service. Those details are specific to that provider’s plans and equipment—not blanket requirements for every fiber connection. See Google Fiber’s guidance on using your own router before applying its requirements to a GFiber setup.
Do not assume every fiber installation has the same user-accessible modem or optical network terminal. Do not unplug, open, clean, or attempt to repair optical-fiber components based on generic troubleshooting advice.

| Check or remedy | Best fit | What it cannot establish or fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wired speed test | Separating a Wi-Fi problem from limits in the device, router, or service path. | A single test does not prove the provider connection is healthy; capable ports and a capable test device matter. |
| Router repositioning | Weak Wi-Fi across rooms or behind obstacles. | It cannot correct an outage or a low wired result. |
| Mesh extender or system | A confirmed Wi-Fi coverage gap when wired performance is healthy. | Results depend on compatibility, placement, and the connection back to the main router. |
| Router replacement | Evidence that the current router is a bottleneck, with a replacement compatible with the provider and plan. | A new router will not resolve a provider-side fault or a limit elsewhere in the test path. |
| Provider support | An outage, suspected line fault, or persistently low wired results after checking the test device and equipment. | Consumer accessories cannot repair a provider-side problem. |
Google Fiber notes that its included router is selected for its service and that a customer-owned router must meet the relevant plan and port requirements. For its equipment-specific guidance, see Use your own router.

When to contact your internet provider
Contact the provider if wired results remain exceptionally or inexplicably low after you have checked the device and equipment, or if the provider reports an outage or you suspect a line fault. Share your recorded upload and download results, test times, connection type, device, and equipment details. Ask whether an outage or service disruption is affecting your area and follow the provider’s instructions for its equipment.
The FCC’s consumer guidance recommends contacting the ISP for troubleshooting advice. A provider can investigate its service and equipment; generic home-network steps cannot diagnose or safely repair an optical-fiber fault.
