Why Facebook Crops Your Open Graph Image—and How to Fix It

Facebook crops link-preview images when their shape does not fit the layout, but an incorrect og:image or stale scraped metadata can also explain a bad preview.

Facebook usually crops a link-preview image because its shape does not fit the preview layout. Start with a 1200 × 630-pixel image (about 1.91:1), check that your page’s og:image points to the intended file, and refresh the page in Facebook Sharing Debugger after publishing changes. Those dimensions are practical Facebook-oriented guidance, not a guarantee that every Facebook placement will display an identical crop.

Why Facebook crops an Open Graph image

Facebook’s preview needs to fit an image into a display area. If the image’s aspect ratio differs from that area, some edges may be trimmed. Facebook-attributed guidance reported by the Wix Help Center recommends an image close to 1.91:1 to avoid cropping issues.

A crop is not always the cause of an unexpected preview. The page may identify a different image than you expect, Facebook may not be able to fetch the intended file, or the preview may reflect previously scraped metadata. The Open Graph protocol defines og:image as the image associated with a page; it does not prescribe one mandatory pixel size. See the Open Graph protocol.

Use a Facebook-oriented image size

As a practical starting point, create a 1200 × 630-pixel image, which is approximately 1.91:1. Wix reports that images smaller than 600 × 315 may appear as small previews, and gives 200 × 200 pixels as a minimum and 8 MB as a maximum file size. These are Facebook-attributed recommendations and thresholds reported by Wix, not requirements of the Open Graph protocol or guarantees for every preview surface.

Keep important material—such as a logo, a face, or essential text—away from the outer edges. That gives the composition some tolerance if a particular layout trims part of the image. It cannot guarantee identical rendering across placements.

Check the image Facebook is being given

  1. Inspect the page’s HTML. Confirm that the page’s head contains an og:image property with the URL of the image you intend to share. The Open Graph protocol describes this property as identifying the page’s associated image.
  2. Check the target file. Open the image URL and verify that it is the right asset, not a default image or a homepage image. Check its pixel dimensions and file size against the practical guidance above.
  3. Review the composition. If the image is the right one but still looks cropped, move important content inward and use a canvas close to 1.91:1.
  4. Publish the changes. Make sure both the updated metadata and image are live at the URLs Facebook should fetch.
  5. Refresh Facebook’s scraped information. Enter the shared page URL in Facebook Sharing Debugger after updating og:image. Wix recommends this step to update the information Facebook has scraped.
  6. Inspect the fetched result. If the preview is still wrong, check which image and page metadata the debugger reports before revising the artwork again. A stale scrape and an incorrect og:image target are different problems.

Tell a wrong image from a crop

  • The preview shows the wrong subject or an unrelated image: check the page’s og:image value and the image reported by the debugger. The page may point to a different asset than the one you edited.
  • The subject is right but edges are missing: check the image’s aspect ratio and move important content away from the edges.
  • The page looks unchanged after an update: confirm the published metadata and image are live, then refresh the shared URL in the debugger. The available guidance does not establish a universal cache duration, so avoid assuming how long a stale preview will persist.
  • The intended image does not appear in the fetched preview: verify that the metadata references the correct file and that the file can be fetched. The available sources do not establish a complete list of crawler access requirements.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean screenshot of a page while checking its layout, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, using a URL you control:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1.91:1 a requirement of the Open Graph protocol?

No. It is Facebook-oriented image guidance reported by Wix; the Open Graph protocol does not mandate a single image size.

Does refreshing the Sharing Debugger guarantee a particular crop?

No. It refreshes scraped page information, but the cited guidance does not guarantee identical rendering across Facebook placements.
