Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If every step in your analytics funnel shows zero, first check whether the events are reaching the property. A zero funnel does not by itself mean your tracking tag is broken: the funnel may instead be excluding real events because of its step conditions, order, entry rules, filters, or date range. This guide assumes you mean Google Analytics 4 (GA4); if you use another analytics product, its debugging steps and funnel rules may differ.
Start by checking whether GA4 receives the events
Reproduce one journey that should trigger the funnel’s first event, then watch for it in GA4 DebugView. Check Realtime as a second view. Google’s troubleshooting guide describes checking whether the tag is installed and sending data; confirm the event appears in the intended Analytics property rather than treating a tag firing in a preview as proof of receipt.

Google’s stated general expectations are that DebugView events appear within seconds, Realtime data within minutes, and standard reports may need 24–48 hours for full processing. These are timing expectations, not guarantees for a particular property or query. See Google’s guide to debugging Analytics.

If the event is missing from DebugView and Realtime
Investigate collection and delivery before changing the funnel. Check that the Measurement ID matches the web data stream for the property you are viewing, that the tag covers the relevant pages, and that the event’s trigger condition is actually met. Also check consent behavior, active property data filters, caching, ad or privacy extensions, and JavaScript errors.

Tag Assistant can help show which Google tags fired and what data was sent. Browser developer tools can help identify JavaScript errors in the Console or failed requests in the Network tab. After investigating, confirm receipt in Analytics itself.
If the event appears in DebugView but not in reports
Make sure you have selected the same property and a date range that includes the test. Allow time for report processing, then check whether a property data filter or a report-specific constraint excludes the event. DebugView and standard reports do not update on the same schedule.

Compare the funnel steps with the events GA4 actually receives
In the funnel exploration, inspect every step’s event name and conditions. Compare them with the event and parameter values seen during the test journey. A spelling difference, unexpected capitalization, or extra condition can prevent a step from matching. GA4 exploration filter matching is case-sensitive, as described in Google’s exploration troubleshooting guidance.
Also check whether multiple clauses have been combined more tightly than intended. If an event arrives but its parameter does not match the configured value, the event will not qualify for that step.
Rank #3
Check direct versus indirect transitions
A directly followed step must occur immediately after the previous step. An indirectly followed step permits intervening actions. If page views or other events normally occur between two funnel actions, a direct-follow requirement can stop users from advancing. Review the transition setting for each relevant step, along with the funnel’s configured time window.
Confirm that the funnel’s entry rules fit the real journey
A closed funnel requires a user to enter at the first step. An open funnel allows entry at any configured step. Both require the steps to occur in the specified order: if a user skips a required step, that user is not counted in later steps. GA4 also reports only the first qualifying sequence for a user in the selected date range. Google explains these rules in its funnel exploration documentation.
Rank #4
If users can naturally begin partway through the journey, try an open funnel to test whether the entry rule is excluding them. If only later steps are zero, look closely at whether users actually complete each earlier step in order.

Remove reporting constraints while you diagnose
Confirm the property selector and date range first. In Explorations, the available date range is limited by the property’s user- and event-level data-retention settings. Then temporarily remove unnecessary segments, comparisons, breakdowns, and filters. A narrow constraint can eliminate a small set of otherwise matching users; low user counts may also be withheld under privacy thresholds.
Compare like with like: use the same property, date range, event, and relevant filters when checking DebugView, Realtime, event reports, and the funnel exploration. Those views may still differ: some fields are unsupported in explorations, converted comparisons can change the included data, behavioral modeling uses different datasets, and privacy thresholds or processing delays may affect results. Google notes that queries covering the past 48 hours may show slight differences as processing continues.
Quick Recap
Use the symptom to choose your next check
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The expected event is absent from DebugView and Realtime | Check whether the tag fires, the Measurement ID points to the intended property, the event condition is met, consent permits collection, and the browser or site is not blocking or failing the request. |
| The event appears in DebugView but the report is empty | Verify the property and date range, allow for report processing, then inspect property filters and report-specific constraints. |
| The event appears in a report but not in the funnel | Compare the exact step conditions and parameters, sequence, direct or indirect transition, open or closed entry rule, segments, filters, and retention-limited date range. |
| Earlier steps have data but later steps are zero | Check whether users complete every required step in order; skipping a step prevents them from counting in later steps. |
