Why Every Developer Should Learn to Write

Writing is already part of software development, from READMEs and API docs to design decisions and pull-request feedback. Here’s why it matters and how to improve.

Developers should learn to write because much of software work already depends on written explanations: code documentation, project plans, pull-request feedback, answers to questions, and instructions for users. Clear writing helps teammates and users understand what a system does and how to work with it. It is a practical engineering skill, not a guaranteed route to promotion or a measurable productivity boost for every developer.

Why should developers learn to write?

Writing is part of the job even when a developer’s title does not include “writer.” A Stack Overflow career article describes routine examples: technical documentation, feedback on a teammate’s pull request, project planning, and answering questions. These are different tasks, but each asks a developer to make information understandable to someone else. Stack Overflow Blog, 2021

That matters because software is used and maintained by people who cannot infer every decision from the code itself. A useful explanation can help another developer set up a project, understand an interface, review a change, or avoid repeating a debugging step. Writing is not separate from engineering; it is one way engineering knowledge moves between people.

What counts as writing in software development?

Technical writing is broader than a long manual. It includes short, task-focused pieces as well as explanations of how a system works.

  • README files: explain what a project is and how to install, run, or contribute to it.
  • API documentation: describe endpoints, inputs, outputs, constraints, and examples.
  • Tutorials: guide a reader through a practical task.
  • Conceptual documentation: explain how a system or component fits together.
  • Release notes: tell users what changed and what they may need to do.
  • Workplace communication: includes design decisions, plans, issue descriptions, review comments, and answers to technical questions.

Why is documentation useful to developers and readers?

Documentation is not merely a record of what a team already knows; it is also a way people learn. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey, nearly 68% of respondents said they had used technical documentation as a learning resource in the previous year. In the same survey, 69% said they had spent time learning new coding techniques or a programming language during that period. These figures describe respondents’ reported behavior; they do not show that writing ability causes better performance, higher pay, or career advancement. Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025

For an engineering team, the practical value is more immediate: documentation can make setup repeatable, preserve decisions, and help a person who was not present for an earlier conversation. A well-written pull-request comment can identify a concern and suggest a change; a vague comment can leave the author guessing. The goal is not to write more, but to reduce avoidable ambiguity where written guidance is useful.

How can a developer improve technical writing?

Google’s Technical Writing courses are aimed at professional software engineers, computer science students, and people in engineering-adjacent roles. Their focus is technical writing—not general English instruction or business writing—and the course page describes both self-study and facilitator-led components. The self-study material can be used independently. Google’s page sums up the idea: “Every engineer is also a writer.” Google for Developers: Technical Writing Courses for Engineers

Practice on real engineering tasks. Start with small pieces that have a clear reader and purpose:

  1. Make a README reproducible. Write setup steps so a teammate can follow them from a clean environment, then check whether each command and prerequisite is clear.
  2. Explain one design decision. State the problem, the choice made, and the trade-off that mattered. Keep background that does not help explain the decision out.
  3. Improve an error message. Say what went wrong and, where possible, what the user can do next.
  4. Write a useful pull-request review. Identify the specific issue, explain why it matters, and propose a concrete change when you can.
  5. Document a small interface. Describe an API’s expected inputs and outputs, and add an example that reflects an ordinary use case.

These exercises are practical ways to work on the kinds of writing developers already encounter. A useful habit is to revise for the reader: remove unexplained assumptions, put steps in the order someone needs them, and check that examples match the instructions.

Can AI replace developer writing?

AI tools may change how developers draft or maintain documentation, but expectations about adoption are not evidence of measured outcomes. Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey, with more than 65,000 developer respondents in May 2024, reported that most respondents expected AI tools to be more integrated into documenting code over the following year. That is a reported expectation, not proof that AI improves documentation or removes the need for developers to judge accuracy and audience fit. Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2024

Do developers need a course or book to learn?

No single resource is necessary. Google’s technical-writing courses offer a course-based route focused on software and engineering contexts. For readers who prefer a book, the Apress 2021 edition of Docs for Developers is a relevant optional guide to documentation formats used by developers. Choose based on whether structured lessons or a reference-style book better suits the work you want to practice; applying the ideas to actual project documentation is another way to build the skill.
