Why has the Kindle been getting more expensive? Amazon says rising memory and storage component costs prompted its 2026 device price adjustments, after the company absorbed increases for as long as it could. That is Amazon’s explanation; the available reporting does not break down how much those parts added to the cost of any particular Kindle.
What changed in US Kindle pricing
US reports in August and September 2026 put the increases at about $40 for both the entry Kindle and the 16GB Paperwhite. The figures below are reported prices at that time, not a live price feed or a guarantee of what a device costs now.

| US model | Reported price before | Reported price after | Reported increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16GB Kindle | $109.99 | $149.99 | $40 |
| 16GB Kindle Paperwhite | $159.99 | $199.99 | $40 |
TechRadar reported the precise figures; WIRED later rounded them to $150 and $200, respectively. Tom’s Guide also described the changes as approximately $110 to $149 for Kindle and $159 to $199 for Paperwhite. Those reports refer to US pricing and should not be treated as a schedule for other countries. TechCrunch; TechRadar

An Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch: “The consumer electronics industry is facing significant increases in memory and storage component costs. After absorbing these increases for as long as we could, we recently adjusted pricing across our product lines.”

The statement gives Amazon’s rationale for adjustments across its product lines. The cited reporting does not establish the exact memory or storage cost increase for a Kindle, how much of the retail increase it explains, or Amazon’s margin on the device. It is therefore more precise to say Amazon attributes the pricing change to component costs than to claim those costs account for a specific share of the higher price.
Prices vary by country and product generation
In October 2026, Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle family for Australia and New Zealand. Its announcement lists the base 6-inch Kindle from A$279/NZ$339 and a 32GB aluminium-back model at A$299/NZ$364. It also describes flush-front displays, updated designs and a Bluetooth page-turn remote. These are launch prices for that regional announcement, not US pricing or evidence of US availability. For historical context, Amazon’s 2024 announcement listed US launch starting prices of $109.99 for Kindle and $159.99 for Paperwhite. Those launch prices are not current prices and do not, by themselves, explain the later increases. Amazon
Amazon also reported more than 720 billion pages read in 2025 in its October 2026 Australia/New Zealand announcement. That is an engagement figure, not evidence about component costs or the cause of higher prices.

How to judge a Kindle deal
A higher listed price does not tell you whether a particular offer is good value. Compare the exact model and configuration, and check the price history rather than relying only on a crossed-out reference price.
- Check the reference price. Amazon defines “Typical” or “Was” as the median price paid on Amazon during the previous 90 days, excluding prices during limited-time deals.
- Understand the discount language. Amazon says it works to offer prices at the lowest point in at least the preceding 30 days. That is a stated aim, not a promise that a Kindle will be discounted or that a particular price will return. Amazon’s reference-price explanation
- Compare like with like. Check screen size and type, storage, lighting, waterproofing, color or writing features, included accessories and local availability. A basic Kindle and a Paperwhite, or two generations sold in different countries, are not interchangeable comparisons.
What the price increase does—and does not—tell you
The reported 2026 US changes show that the Kindle and 16GB Paperwhite became roughly $40 more expensive in the cited reports. Amazon’s public explanation is rising memory and storage costs, but the available reporting does not quantify a Kindle-specific cost increase or prove how much those components contributed to the retail prices. Prices and configurations also differ by market, so a decision to buy should be based on the model and price available in your country, not a price reported for another region.
