Email open rates are estimates, not proof that a person read a message. They record whether a tracking image was requested: image blocking can hide real reading, while Apple Mail Privacy Protection and automated scanners can register activity without a human opening the email. Treat opens as a limited directional signal; use clicks, conversions and provider-specific deliverability data to answer more useful questions.
What an email open rate actually measures
Most email platforms measure an open when a recipient’s mail app downloads a tiny, often invisible tracking image (also called a pixel or web beacon). That event does not verify that the recipient saw or read the message, and it may not reliably show when they did.

The measurement can be wrong in either direction. If a recipient blocks images, the pixel may not load even if they read the email. Apple Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) can preload remote content, including tracking pixels, without the recipient opening the message. Security scanners and other automated activity can also trigger tracking events.

As a result, an open-based audience segment, “resend to non-openers,” open-triggered automation or an A/B test judged by opens can act on misleading data. Mailchimp identifies clicks and purchases as stronger engagement signals in this context: Apple Mail Privacy Protection FAQs, About Open and Click Rates and Use Open Tracking in Emails.

What to track instead
Choose a metric based on the job of the email. A useful reporting setup separates interaction, business results, list health and deliverability rather than treating one number as a universal measure of success.
| Question | Metric to use | What it tells you—and what to define |
|---|---|---|
| Did recipients interact with the message? | Unique clicks or click rate | Shows tracked link activity, which is more actionable than a pixel open for many campaign decisions. Define the denominator—such as delivered emails—and filter known bot activity where possible. A click is not conclusive proof of human intent. |
| Did the campaign achieve its purpose? | Signups, purchases, attributed revenue or another goal-specific conversion | Connect email activity to the intended outcome. State the attribution window and denominator, and apply the same rules when comparing campaigns. |
| Is the list showing warning signs? | Bounces, unsubscribes and spam complaints | These signals help identify delivery or audience problems. A high reported open rate does not cancel out worsening complaint or delivery signals. |
| Is mail reaching inboxes reliably? | Mailbox-provider diagnostics | Review the provider’s available information on reputation, authentication, spam rates and delivery errors. These signals are distinct from recipient engagement. |
How to assess deliverability without relying on opens
An open rate does not establish inbox placement. Google says it does not track open rates, cannot verify the accuracy of third-party open-rate measurements, and that low open rates are not necessarily an accurate indicator of deliverability or spam classification. Google recommends Postmaster Tools for information about spam reports, authentication, reputation and delivery. See Google’s email sender guidelines and Postmaster Tools dashboards.
Rank #2
Postmaster Tools is specific to outgoing mail sent to personal Gmail accounts, not a complete view of every mailbox provider. Its dashboards can omit low-volume data and typically update within 24 hours or longer. A missing or delayed value therefore does not prove that there was no activity, and the tool should not be treated as real-time monitoring.

- Write down the campaign’s intended outcome. For a newsletter, that might be meaningful link interaction; for a product announcement, it might be purchases. Choose the outcome before comparing results.
- Define the event and denominator. For click rate, specify whether the denominator is delivered emails and whether the count is unique clicks. For conversions or revenue, state the attribution window and what qualifies as a conversion.
- Account for automated activity. Use bot filtering where available, especially for clicks, and document how the reporting platform handles known security scanners. Do not treat a tracked event as definitive evidence of human intent.
- Keep list health beside campaign outcomes. Review bounces, unsubscribes and spam complaints alongside clicks and conversions so that engagement is not interpreted in isolation.
- Check deliverability with the mailbox provider. Use available provider diagnostics for reputation, authentication, spam reports and delivery errors. Keep their coverage and update delays in mind when interpreting the data.
- Use opens only as a qualified secondary signal. Do not use reported opens alone to label a person engaged, trigger a consequential automation, decide who gets a resend, or declare an A/B test winner.
How to interpret published open-rate figures
Vendor-published figures can illustrate why open tracking deserves caution, but they are not universal benchmarks. Litmus reported that Apple MPP accounted for 55% of all opens as of March 2024; that is a dated vendor figure, not a current 2026 estimate or a share that can be assumed for every audience. In the same article, Litmus said 40% of marketers in its recent State of Email Innovations survey still used open rates as a primary measure of success; the article excerpt does not establish the survey year. Litmus also quoted Jess Materna, its Director of Product and Partner Marketing: “Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection blocks email marketers from seeing whether or not someone has actually opened an email, or having any detailed information about that subscriber and how they engage,” Litmus: Email Analytics—How to Measure Email Marketing Success Beyond Open Rate.

When open rates are still useful
Open rates can remain a rough, campaign-level trend when the audience, sending conditions and measurement method are reasonably consistent. They are not reliable enough to verify an individual read or to carry a decision on their own. If reported opens rise while clicks and conversions do not, treat the difference as a reason to inspect the other signals—not as proof that more people read or valued the email.
