Compare those views before changing settings. If the streaming software preview is black, fix the file source or scene; if that preview is correct but YouTube’s is black, check the stream connection and event; if YouTube replaces the picture with a placeholder, check for a copyright warning.
The steps below assume “uploaded video file” means a video stored on your computer and sent to YouTube through streaming software such as OBS. A file uploaded to YouTube itself follows a different path.

Find where the picture disappears
Check the same moment of the video at each point in the path. YouTube’s setup guidance describes sending an encoder feed to a live event, while OBS uses scene sources to build that feed. The diagnostic branches below follow that path; they are practical troubleshooting steps, not a claim about the frequency of any particular cause.

- Play the file locally. Confirm it opens and shows a picture on the computer.
- Check the streaming software’s preview. In OBS, look at the preview for the scene intended for the live output.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm you are viewing the scheduled or current event associated with the encoder.

If the OBS preview is black
Select and check the live scene
- In OBS, select the scene intended for the YouTube output.
- In the Sources dock, check that a Media Source is present and points to the intended local video file.
- Make sure the source’s eye icon is on. A hidden source does not appear in the scene.
- Check the source order. A source higher in the list can cover sources below it; move the media source above an opaque source if needed, or hide the covering source.

Confirm the file path and playback
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as supported video types for Media Source. That list does not guarantee that a particular file is intact or that its codecs will decode correctly on your computer. If the source exists but the preview remains black, confirm its path points to the intended file and try playing that file locally.

If you move or rename a file after setting up the source, check that the source still points to its current location. For a playlist using OBS’s VLC Video source, VLC must be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. That VLC requirement applies to this source type, not every local video source.

- Check the YouTube destination configured in the encoder, including the server or stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains that the stream key directs the encoder feed to YouTube and lets YouTube accept it. Use the key associated with the event you are previewing.
- Confirm the scheduled or current event in Live Control Room is the one receiving that feed.
- Wait for the event preview and check YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring video and audio during the stream.
Consult YouTube’s encoder setup and troubleshooting steps and live stream settings guidance. A black playback window by itself does not establish that a file format is unsupported: first determine whether the encoder preview is correct and whether YouTube receives a picture.

If YouTube replaces the video with a placeholder
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its copyright guidance for live streams says that detected content can cause a placeholder image to replace the stream; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Check YouTube Studio for a copyright warning. If you have a licence, the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Resolve the rights issue through the appropriate channel rather than trying to bypass detection.
Common checks before going live
- Wrong scene selected: select the scene that contains the video source.
- Source hidden or covered: turn on its visibility and check whether a higher source obscures it.
- Missing or moved file: verify the source path and test the file locally.
- Wrong event or stream key: match the encoder’s destination and key to the Live Control Room event being checked.
- Copyright interruption: check Studio for a notice and address the underlying rights issue.
YouTube’s guidance says expensive equipment is not required to get started. A hardware encoder is a recommendation for higher-production events, not a general fix for a black local-file source; check the software scene, connection, and rights first.
