It can also tailor suggestions using your past drives. A route change is not automatically a fault: first check whether Waze is offering an alternative or recalculating, then look at personalization, location access, and your data connection if the behavior seems erratic.
Is Waze suggesting a route change or recalculating?
Waze uses information from drivers and reports to help calculate routes, and it needs an active data connection for full navigation functionality. As its information about traffic or road conditions changes, it may suggest another route. The precise trigger for any particular recalculation is not always apparent from the app, so a route change alone does not establish that something is broken. See Waze’s About Waze.

Before a trip, compare the available routes. During navigation, use the alternate-routes control to review options. If Waze proposes a change, its help page documents the choices “Change route” and “No thanks”; the latter keeps you on your current route. Interact with the app only when safely stopped, or ask a passenger to do it. Waze does not document a universal setting that turns off every route suggestion. See View alternate routes.
Common causes of route changes
Live traffic, reports, and closures
Driver-generated information and reports can influence route calculations. Reports may be incomplete or change as more drivers report conditions or use a road, so a suggested alternative may reflect an update rather than a persistent road problem. Waze’s data feed specifications describe its community-based traffic information.

Closure reports can affect the reporter’s route immediately. Waze says a closure appears on the map after more drivers report it, and the report may be removed as drivers begin using the road again. Check the direction of travel, too: a road that appears closed may be closed only in the opposite direction. Details are in Report road closures.
Personalized navigation
Waze can use past drives and route selections to personalize suggestions. The feature is on by default according to Waze’s current help instructions, but availability can vary by area and may require enough navigation history. To compare how routing behaves without this personalization, turn it off temporarily on your phone:

- Open Waze and tap the menu.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation.
- Tap Personalization and turn off Personalized navigation.
Instructions differ on Android Auto and Android Automotive. For CarPlay, Waze says to change this setting on the phone. Check Get personalized navigation for platform-specific guidance.
Location or GPS problems
Waze needs access to your device’s location. Confirm that location is enabled and that Waze has permission to use it. If your position is jumping, inaccurate, or unavailable, investigate location service and GPS rather than assuming the route suggestions themselves are the problem.

For Android, Waze recommends checking location permission and accuracy, restarting the phone if the issue persists, and testing GPS outdoors. Its diagnostic guidance says a reading of 0 m/0 ft or more than 35 m/115 ft indicates GPS may not be working properly in that test. Weak or changing internet connection
A weak connection or a switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data can cause routing errors. Waze’s Android destination-search guidance recommends checking the connection and closing and reopening the app; if the problem remains, check GPS. What to check, in order
- Identify what happened. Note whether Waze offered an alternate route or changed the route without a prompt. Review route options while safely stopped.
- Test personalization. Temporarily switch off Personalized navigation using Settings → Navigation → Personalization → Personalized navigation on your phone, then compare future suggestions.
- Check location access. Make sure device location is enabled and Waze has permission. If GPS seems inaccurate on Android, use Waze’s Android checks above.
- Check connectivity. Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data is working. If a routing error appeared during a network change, close and reopen Waze.
- Consider road information. Check whether a traffic event or closure report could explain the change, bearing in mind that reports may be incomplete or updated.
- For persistent errors, note your device, platform, and the exact message, then consult Waze’s current help for that platform. The official guidance supports checking settings, location, and connectivity; it does not establish an accessory as a general fix for route changes.
