Why Does the Moon Look Larger Near the Horizon?

The Moon only appears larger near the horizon. Learn what the Moon illusion is, why the atmosphere is not magnifying it, and how to check for yourself.

The Moon does not physically grow as it rises or set. It looks larger near the horizon because of the Moon illusion, a perceptual effect in how we judge size. NASA says the effect’s complete explanation is still unsettled; atmospheric refraction does not magnify the Moon.

What causes the Moon illusion?

When the Moon is low, the landscape can provide familiar objects and distance cues that affect how the brain interprets its apparent size. One proposed account compares the effect to the Ponzo illusion: context can make an object seem farther away and therefore larger. But that is not a complete, settled explanation. NASA notes that the illusion can also occur without foreground landmarks, including for astronauts in orbit.

A 2000 experiment by L. Kaufman and J. H. Kaufman found that participants perceived an artificial horizon Moon as farther away. The authors argued that this distance judgment accounts for its perceived larger size in their model. That is one published experimental account, not a universally accepted final answer. NASA’s Moon illusion explainer says there is still no satisfying scientific explanation for exactly why the effect occurs.

Does the atmosphere make the Moon look bigger?

No. Atmospheric refraction bends the Moon’s light as it passes through the atmosphere. Near the horizon, that can make the Moon’s image slightly shorter vertically, rather than larger. NASA’s February 12, 2025 transcript puts it plainly: “The atmosphere isn’t magnifying the Moon. If anything, atmospheric refraction squashes it a little bit.”

The Moon is also not closer to you at the horizon. NASA’s February 12, 2025 transcript says it is about 1.5 percent farther away there than when overhead. That small geometry difference does not explain why it appears larger.

Why does the low Moon look orange or yellow?

Color is a separate atmospheric effect, not evidence of a size change. Moonlight travels through more atmosphere when the Moon is low. The atmosphere scatters more of the shorter blue wavelengths, leaving the Moon looking warmer in color; dust or pollution can deepen the reddish appearance. NASA describes this color shift in its Moon illusion explainer.

How to check whether the Moon really changes size

Try a quick naked-eye comparison

  • Hold an outstretched finger beside the Moon when it is low, then compare it with the Moon higher in the sky.
  • Alternatively, look at it through a paper tube. These checks help you compare its apparent width against a consistent reference.

Compare photographs at the same zoom

NASA’s Moon photography guide suggests taking one photo near the horizon within a couple of days around full Moon, then another when the Moon is higher, using the same camera and zoom. Compare the high Moon’s diameter with the longest, horizontal diameter of the low Moon’s image: refraction may have squashed the low image vertically. Earth’s rotation slightly changes the camera-to-Moon distance during the comparison, so the apparent widths need not be mathematically identical.

A tripod can help keep photographs steady, and a cable release can reduce vibration, but neither is necessary for the naked-eye check. NASA also cautions that some mirror-lens telephoto lenses and reflecting telescopes can change effective focal length as focus or temperature changes, which can undermine an image-size comparison.

Sun Earth Moon Orbital Model with Light, Kids Solar System Model Astronomical Science Educational Kits
  • The model is an excellent way to illustrate Earth's rotation, the planet's revolution around the sun, the seasons of the year, and the orbit of our moon - all in one!
  • This device can serve to illustrate to a young child that Earth spins on its axis, that the moon orbits Earth every 28 days, and the Earth orbits the sun once a year,Can help child's astronomy class better understand moon phases, eclipses, season, etc.
  • You can learn about the 24 Solar Terms used by farmers in China,It's pretty easy, it comes in English.
  • There is a raised button on the sun model, Remove the wire and push the button, the sun will give out light.
  • Note: This item will be interesting to kids who are starting to get excited about astronomy, but It is not suitable for rigorous astronomy scientific research!

A long-lens photograph that shows a large Moon over a landscape is not proof that the Moon physically grew. Zoomed-in framing can make the Moon and foreground appear together in a striking composition.
