The last “minute” on a washing machine is usually an estimate, not a promise that the cycle will finish in 60 seconds. The washer may be trying to balance laundry for the final spin, clear excess suds, drain water, or finish heating. One slow finish can be normal; recurring delays paired with standing water, very wet clothes, heavy vibration, or an error code deserve a closer look.
Why the timer can stop at one minute
A washer calculates remaining time from changing conditions, rather than counting down a fixed duration. Whirlpool Product Help says its estimate can reflect load size and type, the selected cycle and options, household water temperature and pressure, and whether an unbalanced load is detected. If suds or an imbalance disrupt the expected cycle, the display may hold or even reach zero before the washer is actually done. Other brands use their own controls, so the exact behavior varies by model. Whirlpool explains its remaining-time display.

What may be happening near the end
The washer is balancing the load for spin
Before a fast spin, a washer may tumble laundry slowly to spread it around the drum. If clothes are bunched to one side, it can repeat those movements and try the spin again. A single bulky item, such as bedding or a rug, a very small load, a tightly packed drum, or a mix of fabrics with different weights can make balance harder to achieve. LG describes these balancing movements and the ways an uneven load can extend spinning in its cycle-time guidance and washer vibration and load guidance.

Excess suds are prompting extra rinsing
Too much detergent, or detergent that is not suitable for a high-efficiency (HE) washer, can create foam that interferes with rinsing and spinning. Depending on the machine, the washer may add water or rinse time, run an extra rinse, or reduce spin speed. Whirlpool describes a suds-related delay, while Miele and Bosch also document controls that can add rinsing when they detect foam. Use the detergent type and amount specified in your own washer’s manual; adding more detergent because the timer appears stuck can make the problem worse. Whirlpool’s guidance, Miele’s explanation of cycle duration, and the Bosch owner manual for a specific model describe these responses; controls differ by model.

Drainage or water supply is slowing a stage
A kinked drain hose or obstructed drain filter can delay draining and the following spin. Elsewhere in the cycle, dirty inlet filters, a kinked inlet hose, or low water pressure can slow filling. Thick fabrics and larger loads may also take longer to absorb water and drain. LG lists these potential delays in its cycle troubleshooting guidance. If water remains in the drum or spinning repeatedly stalls, check hoses and clean a filter only as your model’s manual directs; filter access and cleaning steps are not universal.
A heated setting needs more time
A sanitize or steam cycle may pause at the same estimated time while heating water. Whirlpool says heating time can depend on the incoming water temperature and the load. There is no single number of minutes that separates a normal finish from a fault across all washers and programs. A one-off pause without other symptoms can reflect the machine adjusting its estimate or correcting the load. A repeated delay across varied loads is more informative, especially when it comes with poor draining, very wet clothes, unusual shaking, or an error code. Check the manual for the cycle and any displayed code, and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance.
