Usually, it is expected behavior: iPhone Always-On turns off in certain situations, including when the phone is face down or blocked from view, Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is on, or it reaches your usual bedtime. Check those conditions first, then confirm the feature is enabled at Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. Apple documents these conditions in its iPhone display guide.
When Always-On turns off automatically
On supported iPhone models, Always-On keeps a dimmed version of the Lock Screen visible while the phone is locked. Apple lists these situations in which the display automatically turns off:

- The iPhone is face down or its display is obstructed from view.

- A CarPlay session begins.
- Continuity Camera is in use.
- Low Power Mode is on.
- Sleep Focus is on.

These are conditions the feature is designed to respond to, not by themselves evidence of a display fault. The cited Apple guide describes availability on supported models but does not list every eligible model, so confirm support for your exact iPhone before treating the behavior as a problem.

- Turn the screen toward view. Place the iPhone face up and remove anything covering or blocking the display.
- Check its paired Apple Watch, if you have one. Apple lists being away from a paired Watch as a reason for Always-On to turn off.
- Check what the iPhone is doing. See whether a CarPlay session has started or Continuity Camera is in use.
- Check power and focus settings. Look for Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus, and consider whether it is your usual bedtime.
- Confirm Always-On is enabled. Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. Apple says the feature is on by default, but it can be switched off in this menu.
If only the wallpaper or notifications disappear
A dim Lock Screen can remain visible without showing every element. In Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display, check the separate Show Wallpaper and Show Notifications controls if either is missing.

Always-On is different from Auto-Lock
Always-On controls whether a dimmed Lock Screen remains visible while the iPhone is locked. Auto-Lock is a separate setting for when the iPhone dims and locks during ordinary use. If the screen is timing out while you are using the phone, check Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. Apple notes that delaying or preventing Auto-Lock may increase power use; see its guide to keeping the display on longer.
