There is no single confirmed cause for every StreamYard black screen when sending a prerecorded video to YouTube. First check that the uploaded file contains compatible video: StreamYard specifies MP4 with H.264 video, and recommends AAC audio and other optimization settings. Then locate where the picture disappears—the local file, StreamYard studio, YouTube Live Control Room, or public watch page—to narrow down whether the issue is the media, browser/network path, or outgoing stream.
First, identify where the video turns black
Check whether audio continues, where you see the black picture, and whether other viewers see it too. These clues help locate the failing stage; they do not by themselves prove a particular cause.

- Local file: Play the exact file you uploaded. Confirm that its picture appears throughout, not just that its audio plays.
- StreamYard studio: Note whether the studio preview is black or shows a spinning circle before the broadcast reaches YouTube.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Check its live preview while the broadcast is running.
- Public watch page: Ask whether the issue affects one viewer or multiple viewers on different connections.
This distinction matters: a black studio preview, a bad outgoing stream, and a viewer-side playback problem can look similar but call for different checks.
Check the prerecorded file’s actual encoding
StreamYard’s Pre-recorded Streaming guide specifies an MP4 file with H.264 video. Its upload guidance also notes that file-size and duration limits vary by plan, so check the current help page and your plan for those limits.

An .mp4 extension identifies the container, not necessarily the codecs inside it. StreamYard explains in guidance for its video-sharing or video-clip feature that an MP4 can still contain a codec unsupported by a browser; for that workflow, it recommends H.264 video and AAC audio. That qualification concerns the named feature and should not be treated as proof that every prerecorded-stream black screen has a codec cause.

StreamYard suggests HandBrake for re-encoding and recommends uploading the converted file again if the upload has trouble or playback lags. These are compatibility and optimization recommendations, not a guaranteed cure for a black picture. StreamYard states that paid plans support up to 1080p; check its current plan information for volatile limits.
If the StreamYard studio preview is black
A black preview with a spinning circle can indicate that the browser studio cannot load media. StreamYard says a firewall or proxy on a work network or work-provided device may block connections required for camera and screen-share media. See its firewall and proxy guidance and ask the network administrator whether StreamYard connections are restricted.

This documented issue concerns the studio’s camera and screen-share path. It is a reason to investigate network restrictions when the studio preview is affected—not evidence that a firewall explains every prerecorded broadcast that appears black on YouTube.
For a studio-preview problem, also check StreamYard’s device and browser guidance, which recommends Chrome or Edge on desktop. Browser support is a sensible check for a studio issue, but the guidance does not establish it as a universal fix for a black prerecorded output.

If the file is fine but YouTube receives a black stream
Compare the studio output with YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and the public watch page. If the local video plays correctly but the outgoing picture is faulty, use YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance to inspect the encoder output, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connection.
YouTube notes that reports from multiple viewers on different connections can help distinguish a broader stream problem from an issue affecting one viewer. Its general encoder setup guidance covers a YouTube server URL and stream key for encoder workflows. Do not assume you need to change those settings when using StreamYard’s native YouTube destination integration.

Separate screen-sharing problems from prerecorded uploads
If you are actually sharing a screen rather than sending an uploaded prerecorded file, StreamYard documents a separate black-screen issue when Chrome runs on Wayland and the entire display is shared. Its Wayland troubleshooting guidance describes a PipeWire capturer flag workaround. That is specific to screen sharing; it is not a fix for an uploaded prerecorded video.
What to send support if the problem continues
Collect details before contacting StreamYard or reporting an ongoing live-stream issue to YouTube. Useful evidence includes:
- The file container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and total bitrate.
- Whether the local file plays correctly and whether audio continues during the black screen.
- Where the picture first becomes black: studio preview, YouTube Live Control Room, or public watch page.
- Whether one viewer or several viewers on different connections are affected.
- A screenshot or short recording of the affected screen, plus any visible encoder or dashboard errors.
YouTube advises checking the encoder before reporting continuing live-stream issues. StreamYard’s published help does not identify one root cause or give an incidence rate for every black-screen case in this workflow.
