Samsung does not identify one universal cause for Samsung Notes crashes. Outdated app or device software, low storage or memory, background activity, unstable internet, and temporary software problems can all be factors—but the symptom alone does not reveal which one applies. Start with updates, a restart, and low-risk checks. Before clearing app data, make sure important notes are backed up or synced: that step can erase information stored by the app.
Why Samsung Notes may keep crashing
A crash is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Samsung’s general troubleshooting guidance lists several possible app and device factors, including outdated software, limited storage or memory, background activity, unstable internet, and temporary software issues. Those possibilities do not establish the cause of a particular Samsung Notes crash or identify a universally affected model or app version.

Work through the low-risk steps below first, changing one thing at a time. After each change, reopen Notes and try the same note or action that previously caused the crash. This makes it easier to tell whether a step helped.

Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Update Samsung Notes and your Galaxy device
- Open the store where Samsung Notes was installed—Samsung’s U.S. guidance names Galaxy Store and Google Play Store—and check for an app update.
- Open Settings > Software update and install an available system update.
- Reopen Notes and check whether the crash continues.
Update availability and menu names can vary by device, software version, and app store. Samsung recommends checking app and system updates when an app crashes or a device has performance problems. Samsung’s app-crash guidance and its slow or unresponsive device guidance explain these checks.

2. Restart the device and reduce background load
- Restart your Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Close apps you are not using.
- If available, use Device Care to check memory and run its memory cleanup.
- Check whether device storage is nearly full and free space if needed.
Samsung recommends restarting and managing memory for general performance problems. These checks may help if the device is under load, but they do not prove that memory or storage caused a specific Notes crash.
3. Clear Samsung Notes cache
- Open Settings > Apps > Samsung Notes > Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Open Notes again and test the same workflow.
Cache clearing removes temporary files; it is different from clearing app data. Samsung notes that the exact steps can vary by software and app selection. See Samsung’s cache and data instructions.

Back up your notes before clearing app data
Do not treat Clear data as an ordinary cache-clearing step. Samsung warns: “Deleting your app’s data will erase any data stored by the app and may log you out of the app. Backup any important information before clearing data.” Clearing data resets the app and can remove its stored information and settings; you may need to sign in again. Samsung explains this in its U.S. app-crash guidance and cache and data instructions.
Verify sync or another backup
Before any reset, open Samsung Notes settings and check the Samsung Cloud account and sync status, if that option is available. A 2024 Galaxy Z Flip6 user manual documents a “Sync with Samsung Cloud” control in Samsung Notes. Its presence in that manual does not mean sync is available or enabled on every device, that syncing has completed, or that every local note is included. If you cannot verify that important notes are safely backed up, do not clear data yet.

Clear data only if your notes are protected
Once important notes are backed up or otherwise secured, you can consider Settings > Apps > Samsung Notes > Storage > Clear data. Menu labels can vary. This resets the app and may remove stored information and settings; it may require you to sign in again. Samsung describes the reset, but does not promise it will fix a Notes crash.

Check permissions and reinstall if available
Samsung’s general app-crash guidance includes checking app permissions and uninstalling and reinstalling an app where possible. Whether Samsung Notes can be removed or reinstalled varies by device and software version. Protect important notes before attempting any step that could affect app data.

Run diagnostics or contact Samsung
On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung Members can run phone diagnostics and submit an error report. Samsung also provides support through its app-crash support guidance. Include your Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, Samsung Notes version, when the problem began, and the steps that reproduce it.
