Check that navigation reached the URL you intended, inspect the main response status, and verify that the content you want is actually rendered before calling page.screenshot(). A resolved page.goto() promise alone does not prove that the expected page content loaded.
What a blank screenshot tells you—and what it does not
page.screenshot() captures the page as it exists when the method runs. Puppeteer’s guide navigates to a page before capturing it, but navigation completion and application readiness are separate questions. A capture that looks blank does not, by itself, identify which step failed.

In particular, page.goto() returns the main resource response or null. A null response can be expected when navigating to about:blank or to the same URL with only a different hash. In headless shell, a valid HTTP error response such as 404 or 500 does not necessarily make goto() throw. Check the returned response and the browser’s final URL rather than treating a resolved promise as proof of success. See Puppeteer’s Page.goto() reference.

Log the URL you pass to

Inspect the main response
Keep the response returned by
page.goto(). When it is present, inspect its status. A 404 or 500 may still be a valid HTTP response, so the navigation promise can resolve even though the page is an error page or does not contain your expected content. Anullresponse is not necessarily an error; it can occur for the documented same-document cases. -
Wait for the content you need
Do not assume a generic navigation milestone means client-rendered content is ready. Use
page.waitForSelector()for an element that should appear, orpage.waitForFunction()for an application-specific readiness condition. The right condition is the one that represents the content your screenshot must show. Puppeteer documents these methods in its Page API reference.Rank #2

Check whether the content is in a frame
If the expected content is embedded, inspect
page.frames()and identify the frame that should contain it. Compare a full-page and targeted capture
Capture the page, then capture the expected element with
ElementHandle.screenshot()if you can locate it. If the page image is blank but the element capture works, the problem is different from a missing element; if the element cannot be found, focus on navigation, rendering, or frame selection. A minimal diagnostic script
This CommonJS example records the destination and main response, waits for a page-specific selector, and saves both a page screenshot and an optional element screenshot. Replace the URL and selector with values for the page you are debugging. Install Puppeteer in the project first.

})();The example intentionally waits for a meaningful element rather than adding an arbitrary delay. If the application exposes a better ready signal, use it with waitForFunction(). For example, wait for a known state flag or for the text/data your capture depends on. The exact condition is page-specific; there is no universal selector or readiness signal.

Common causes and fixes
- The browser stayed on an empty or unexpected document: compare the requested URL with
page.url(). Verify URL construction and redirects, and account forabout:blankor same-URL hash navigation. - The server returned an error page: inspect the main response status. In headless shell, HTTP 404 and 500 responses do not necessarily reject
page.goto(); handle status codes explicitly in your script. - The screenshot ran before the app rendered: wait for the content’s selector or an application-specific condition, rather than assuming navigation completion means the interface is ready.
- The content lives in an iframe: inspect the page’s frames and wait for the correct frame’s content before capture.
- Only the expected area is missing: compare a page screenshot with an element screenshot to narrow whether the whole document or just that region is absent.
When the first checks do not explain it
Collect the actual requested and final URLs, Puppeteer and Chromium versions, launch and headless configuration, response status, browser console messages, page errors, frame list, and the wait and capture code. Those details help distinguish navigation, rendering, and capture-timing problems. Without them, a particular root cause cannot be established reliably.
