First, check where the skip happens: compare OBS’s preview and a local recording with the YouTube stream. If the video is missing in OBS itself, check the source type, playlist settings, file, and whether the source becomes hidden. If OBS plays it continuously but viewers see gaps or freezes, investigate rendering, encoding, network delivery, and YouTube alerts instead; those are different problems from a playlist skipping a file.
Find out where the video disappears
Watch the OBS preview and make a short local recording, then compare both with what appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room or player. This separates a playback problem inside OBS from a delivery problem after OBS has produced the picture.

- Missing from the OBS preview or local recording: start with the media source, playlist entry, file readability, and visibility behavior.
- Present in OBS but missing or frozen for viewers: check OBS statistics, rendering and encoding load, outbound connection, and YouTube’s dashboard.
- The whole YouTube broadcast is replaced, interrupted, or ended: check for copyright or Community Guidelines notices in YouTube Studio.
YouTube recommends checking the encoder output and live dashboard, CPU load, a local archive, and the outbound internet connection when stream quality is poor. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide gives that diagnostic sequence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the OBS source that matches your videos
OBS’s built-in Media Source and VLC Video Source are not interchangeable playlist players. Media Source is intended for a local media file; VLC Video Source is the documented option for a playlist of multiple local files. OBS’s Media Sources guide describes their controls and requirements.

| OBS source | Best fit | Controls to check | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local media file | Loop; Restart playback when source becomes active; hardware decoding option | OBS documents it as a file source, not a multi-file playlist. |
| VLC Video Source | Several local files in a playlist | Loop Playlist; Shuffle Playlist; Visibility Behaviour; network caching | Requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. |
For one repeating file: Media Source
Add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop if it should replay after finishing. If the source can become hidden during scene changes, review Restart playback when source becomes active: activation can restart playback rather than resume it. This source is suitable for one file, not a playlist of multiple files.
For multiple files: VLC Video Source
Add a VLC Video Source and put the files in its playlist. Check the playlist options against the behavior you want:

- Loop Playlist: starts again after the source runs out of media files. OBS documents this as on by default.
- Shuffle Playlist: randomizes file order; the documented default is off. Leave it off if the study schedule depends on a fixed sequence.
- Visibility Behaviour: determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is not visible. The documented default is to stop while hidden and restart when visible.
- Network caching: the documented default is 400 ms. This is a source setting to inspect, not a universal cure for skipped media.
If a scene change hides the source, the visibility setting may account for playback stopping or restarting. Confirm what the installed OBS version actually shows; these settings are checks, not a guaranteed diagnosis. OBS’s current moving-branch source code also describes stop/restart behavior, but the settings in your installed version are authoritative. OBS VLC Video Source code.
Test the file before changing the stream
Try the affected file by itself in a Media Source, then compare it with a file known to play correctly. Confirm the file exists at the listed path, can be opened, and plays outside OBS. OBS documents Media Source support for video containers including .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm, and audio formats including .mp3, .aac, .ogg, and .wav. An extension alone does not prove that every codec or encoding inside a file will work.

- Test the affected file alone in OBS, away from the full playlist.
- Test one known-good file using the same source type.
- If only one file fails, check its path and whether it plays in another player; replace or re-encode that file only if the test points to a file-specific issue.
- If the file works alone but not in the playlist, recheck playlist entries, source visibility, and whether the source is being stopped or restarted by a scene change.
If only the YouTube stream drops frames
When OBS’s preview and local recording are continuous but the broadcast freezes, the playlist may be working correctly. Look at OBS statistics for dropped frames and rendering or encoding problems, and compare them with the local recording and YouTube dashboard.
Rendering or encoding load
OBS scenes and sources require GPU resources; complex scenes and media at unnecessarily high resolution can add load. If skips coincide with high rendering or encoding load, simplify the scene or test a lower-resolution copy. Treat load as a hypothesis until the statistics or a repeatable test link it to the symptom. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Connection drops
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Investigate the outbound connection and configured bitrate; lowering bitrate may reduce drops in some cases, but also lowers stream quality and does not fix the underlying connection. Follow OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting steps.

Check YouTube only when the symptoms point there
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. Depending on the match and circumstances, it may replace the live picture with a placeholder, warn the creator, interrupt or terminate the stream, or terminate it for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes. If the whole broadcast is replaced or interrupted, check YouTube Studio for a notice. That policy is not an explanation for a local OBS playlist silently skipping one file. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Playback and monetization are separate questions. YouTube’s policy update dated 2025-07-15 renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under existing monetization rules. Its policy describes monetization as requiring materially varied substance and creative, educational, or other value; this does not mean every looped study stream is automatically disallowed. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
When the basic checks do not identify the cause
The cause depends on details such as which OBS source you use, operating system and software versions, file format, scene visibility, OBS log, and whether the skip appears in a local recording. If the checks above do not resolve it, collect an OBS log and note whether the missing video appears in OBS’s preview and local recording, or only on YouTube. That evidence helps distinguish a source or file issue from encoding, network, or platform interruption.
A 2020 OBS forum user reported that adding media to a running stream could reset playback to the first video, but that individual report does not establish a universal behavior or current-version bug. The forum discussion is useful context only if your symptom specifically follows adding media while the stream is running.
