OBS can skip cartoon files for several different reasons, so first identify how the playlist is built. OBS documents its VLC Video Source for playlists; the built-in Media Source is intended for individual files. If you already use VLC Video Source, check its loop, shuffle and visibility settings, then test a skipped file on its own and verify its path. A playlist transition problem is different from a video that is playing but hidden.
Start by identifying the source type
In the OBS Sources list, determine whether the playlist is a VLC Video Source or several individual Media Sources. OBS documents VLC Video Source as the playlist option, and VLC must be installed for that source to appear. If OBS is 64-bit, the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC. OBS: VLC Video Source

| Source | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source | A playlist of files | VLC installation and bitness, playlist entries, loop and shuffle settings, and visibility behavior. |
| Media Source | An individual media file | File path, playback settings, and whether that particular file plays by itself. |
If you assembled a sequence of Media Sources to act like a playlist, test each file separately before changing the sequence. A working neighbor file does not prove that the skipped file has a compatible encoding or valid path.

Check the VLC playlist settings
Select the VLC Video Source and inspect its properties. OBS documents controls for looping and shuffling the playlist, as well as visibility behavior that can continue, pause or stop playback when the source is not visible. Choose settings that match how the scene is used: for a continuously running sequence, confirm the playlist loop is enabled; disable shuffle if order matters. OBS: VLC Video Source

- Loop Playlist: Check this if the sequence should start again after its final entry.
- Shuffle Playlist: Turn this off when cartoons need to play in a fixed order. Shuffle changes order; it does not repair an unreadable file.
- Visibility Behaviour: Confirm whether playback should continue while the source is hidden. A pause or stop setting may make a source appear to have stalled after a scene or visibility change.
Make sure the video is visible in the scene
If audio continues but the picture disappears, playback may not have failed. Confirm the source is enabled in the Sources list and is not covered by another source. OBS renders sources higher in the list above lower ones, so an opaque source above the playlist can obscure it. OBS: Sources Guide
Check the source’s size and position in the preview as well. One OBS forum user reported that right-clicking the source and choosing Transform → Reset Transformation fixed a sound-without-picture symptom. That is a user-reported, symptom-specific fix—not a general explanation for skipped playlist entries. OBS forum report: VLC video source, no video but audio

Test the skipped file by itself
- Verify the path. Confirm the playlist entry points to the file where it currently lives. If files were moved or renamed, update the entry and test again.
- Open it as a standalone source. Add the suspect file as a Media Source or otherwise test it individually. Compare its result with a known-good cartoon file.
- Compare the files. Note their containers, encodings and playback behavior. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among Media Source video extensions, but a supported filename extension does not guarantee that every codec combination will work in a particular setup. OBS: Media Sources
- Return it to the playlist. If it plays alone but is skipped in the VLC playlist, focus next on the VLC source’s playlist entries and settings. If it also fails alone, investigate the file, path or encoding before blaming playlist transitions.
Distinguish a transition failure from an invisible picture
Record exactly what happens: does playback move past an item without showing it, stop on the last frame, or continue with audio but no visible picture? These symptoms point to different checks. A forum thread describes a VLC playlist that played one video and stopped on its final frame; it concerned OBS 21.0.1 and VLC 3.0.0 in 2018. It is a historical user report, not evidence of a current universal OBS bug. OBS forum report: VLC Video Source only plays one video on playlist
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the problem persists, capture the details needed to reproduce it: operating system, OBS and VLC versions, source type and properties, the affected file paths and encodings, and whether the issue is a skipped transition or a picture that is merely invisible. Test one known-good file and one skipped file under the same conditions before assigning a cause.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | First checks |
|---|---|
| A playlist item is skipped | Check its path and test it individually; then inspect the VLC playlist entry and source settings. |
| The sequence ends instead of starting over | Check whether Loop Playlist is enabled. |
| Items play in an unexpected order | Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. |
| Playback changes when the source is hidden | Review Visibility Behaviour and the scene or visibility changes that hide the source. |
| Audio continues but the picture is absent | Check source visibility, layer order and transform; test the file separately. |
| VLC Video Source is unavailable | Confirm VLC is installed and that its bitness matches OBS; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. |
| One video plays, then playback stops on its last frame | Record versions and reproduce the issue. A 2018 forum report is a symptom reference, not proof of a current general defect. |
