OBS can appear to “skip frames” for three different reasons: dropped frames from an unstable or overloaded connection to YouTube, rendering lag while OBS builds the scene, or encoding lag while it compresses the stream. Check which OBS counter is rising before changing settings. A video file can add decoding and scene-processing work, but its presence alone does not show that it is the cause.
First, identify which frames OBS is losing
During a short test stream, watch OBS’s performance statistics and connection indicator. The distinction determines what to troubleshoot:
- Dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote streaming server, or the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Start with upload capacity and network stability.
- Rendering lag: OBS is falling behind while compositing and rendering the scene. Look at GPU load, output demands, and scene complexity.
- Encoding lag: OBS cannot encode the output quickly enough. Reduce the encoding workload or consider a supported hardware encoder.
OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to keep up with the set bitrate. Rendering and encoding lag are separate local-performance problems.
If OBS reports dropped frames, troubleshoot the connection
Match bitrate to stable upload capacity
Lower the video bitrate to a rate your connection can sustain consistently and that is supported by your streaming setup. OBS suggests about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point—not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific rule. A speed-test peak does not necessarily represent reliable upload performance throughout a stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the network path
- If you are using Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet; wireless instability can interrupt a stream even when a speed test looks adequate.
- Try a different streaming server where available.
- If drops continue, check whether a VPN, security software, network-prioritizing utility, or outdated network driver is interfering.
OBS documents Windows-only network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate adjustment as additional options. They are not universal fixes: dynamic bitrate may reduce quality, and neither option addresses the underlying cause of a poor connection. Use them only after basic network checks.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, reduce local workload
Ease rendering demands
OBS uses the GPU to render and composite scenes. If rendering lag rises, try these changes one at a time and watch the counter after each:

- Close other programs that are using substantial GPU resources.
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate if the stream does not need the current settings. Moving from 60 fps to 30 fps reduces the work required when 60 fps is not stable.
- Simplify the scene and reduce demanding sources or filters.
- Use lower-resolution media when a source is larger than its displayed size requires.
Ease encoding demands
If encoding lag appears or OBS reports “encoding overloaded,” lower output demands first. A supported hardware encoder may move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. The benefit depends on your hardware and bottleneck; it is not a reason to buy a GPU without checking the OBS log. OBS notes that modern hardware encoders generally have low performance impact, while earlier generations can produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using its default veryfast preset. See OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting and Hardware Encoding guides.
When the video file seems to trigger the problem
A Media Source is part of the scene OBS must process. The source may add decoding or compositing work, particularly if its dimensions exceed what the scene needs. That makes the file a possible contributor, not a confirmed cause. OBS’s Media Sources guide lists support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.

- Compare playback outside OBS. If the same file stutters in a media player too, investigate the file or system playback before attributing the issue to streaming.
- Check whether the counter changes with the source. Compare a test with the Media Source visible or active against one without it. Note whether rendering or encoding lag changes.
- Test hardware decoding. In the Media Source properties, try toggling Use hardware decoding when available and compare the same OBS counters. The option is off by default in the documented settings and only applies to file types supported by the installed GPU decoder; it is not guaranteed to improve performance.
- Try a smaller source copy. If the video is much higher resolution than its size in the scene, test a lower-resolution copy and see whether the local lag changes.
Media Source also has controls such as playback speed, loop, and restart when active. Check these if the symptom is tied to playback behavior, but do not assume they explain a rising dropped-frame counter.
Use the symptom to choose the next test
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | First useful test |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frame counter rises and connection indicator degrades | Network path to the ingest server or bitrate beyond stable capacity | Lower bitrate, test wired Ethernet, and check network software or another server. |
| Rendering-lag indicator rises | GPU scene rendering or compositing | Reduce output resolution/FPS, simplify the scene, and close GPU-heavy programs. |
| Encoding-lag indicator rises or “encoding overloaded” appears | Encoder or system workload | Lower output demands; consider a supported hardware encoder after checking the system. |
| Stutter occurs only when the file source is active | Media decoding, source dimensions, or scene workload may be involved | Compare playback outside OBS, test hardware decoding, and try a lower-resolution source. This is a diagnostic lead, not proof without logs. |
| OBS counters stay clear but viewers report buffering | Viewer device, network, or playback conditions | Check a viewer-side example and platform playback behavior rather than assuming OBS is dropping frames. |
When viewers buffer but OBS counters are clear
Viewer buffering is not proof that the broadcaster is losing frames. OBS notes that viewers may buffer even when the broadcaster is not dropping frames, because their devices and network connections differ. Check the OBS dropped-frame counter first; if it stays clear, investigate the viewer’s playback conditions instead of changing the streamer’s network settings by assumption. See OBS Project’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.

What to capture if the cause is still unclear
For a useful diagnosis, note the exact counter that rises, whether the connection indicator changes, and when the symptom occurs relative to the Media Source. Include the OBS log, file details, operating system, output settings, and whether the same file plays smoothly outside OBS. Without those details, general troubleshooting guidance cannot identify the cause on a particular computer.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than troubleshoot an OBS setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
