To stream a prerecorded video continuously from a spare PC, use OBS Studio as the encoder: add a local file as a looping Media Source, or build a playlist with OBS’s VLC Video source, then connect OBS to a YouTube Live broadcast. Before relying on the setup, test playback, stream output and the PC’s network connection. A spare PC is still a computer that must remain powered and connected; neither YouTube nor OBS promises uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Choose a single video or a playlist
For one video that should restart whenever it ends, use OBS’s Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos, use the VLC Video source, which supports playlists and loop and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed; OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The source types supported by Media Source include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM video, and MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV audio. Confirm that your specific files play correctly in the OBS installation you will use.

Decide whether the order matters before configuring a playlist: use a fixed sequence when videos need to play in a particular order, and shuffle only when varying the sequence is intended. Preview the source from beginning to end, including the transition back to the start or to the next playlist item.
Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast
- Sign in to the YouTube account and enable live streaming. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this step until the moment you intend to start.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live broadcast. Use its stream setup information to connect an encoder.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and select the YouTube service or enter the connection details provided by Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow for the broadcast.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as account access information: do not put it in a public post, recording, screenshot or stream overlay. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls before continuing.
Menu labels can change between OBS and YouTube updates, so use the current Live Control Room and OBS labels rather than relying on a guide for an older version.

Set OBS output to match the connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube lists supported codecs, so select a codec supported by its current guidance and by the encoder configuration you are using. Choose a resolution and bitrate that the PC and upload connection can sustain reliably rather than choosing the highest available settings by default.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation for YouTube Live.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate encoding as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: set the interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: select values supported by YouTube and suitable for your measured upload capacity. The cited guidance does not establish one universal bitrate for every resolution and frame rate.
Run an upload-speed test and do a real stream test before depending on the PC. A connection’s headline speed is not proof that it will sustain the configured stream continuously; other devices, network changes and the route to YouTube’s ingest server can affect performance.

Prepare the spare PC and network for continuous use
OBS recommends a wired network connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Ethernet is preferable where practical; OBS does not prescribe a cable category or brand. If you must use Wi-Fi, test from the PC’s actual streaming location and watch for dropped frames and disconnects during a sustained test.
The PC, OBS, the media files and the internet connection all remain part of the local streaming chain. Check your operating system’s power settings so the computer does not sleep during the broadcast, and make sure the source files remain available at the paths OBS expects. The exact sleep, restart and crash-recovery controls vary by operating system and hardware; the cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish a single configuration that guarantees recovery after power loss, a crash or a thermal problem. Test your own machine under the conditions in which it will run.

Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Play each source in OBS. Check sound, picture, aspect ratio and whether the file loops or advances as intended.
- Start a test broadcast using the planned output settings. Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the picture and audio are acceptable.
- Let the test run long enough to catch a loop boundary, playlist transition or connection problem. Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and connection indicators.
- Check that the PC stays awake and that OBS continues playing the source. Confirm that the media files and any VLC playlist remain available after a restart if you expect to reboot the machine.
- Only then use the setup for a longer broadcast. Continue checking it periodically; a successful test is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
Troubleshoot common failures

Local PC or cloud service?
A spare-PC setup gives you direct control over local files and OBS, but it depends on the computer and its internet connection continuing to run. YouTube also describes cloud-based tools for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. The cited guidance does not provide a quantitative reliability comparison or establish that any particular provider is suitable, so weigh the operational trade-off against your needs rather than treating either approach as a guarantee.

Putting a video on a continuous live stream does not grant rights to its music, footage or other material. Use content you created or have permission to stream, and check the applicable YouTube policies before broadcasting. Copyright permission and channel monetization eligibility are separate questions; a stream being technically live does not establish that its content qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before relying on a 24/7 format.
