YouTube’s latency setting affects how quickly viewers receive the stream and the risk of buffering; it does not correct a microphone that is early or a camera image that is late. Check a viewer-side playback before changing settings.
Identify which kind of delay you have
“Delay” can describe two different problems. Whole-stream latency is the time from capture to playback for viewers. Audio/video sync error is a mismatch between sound and picture. A stream can have substantial whole-stream latency and still have perfectly aligned audio and video.

- Both picture and sound arrive late, but stay aligned: investigate YouTube’s stream-latency option and playback buffering.
- Sound leads or trails the picture: investigate source timing in your streaming software.
- The mismatch grows, stutters, or appears with stream-health warnings: also check the connection and encoder path.
Note whether the issue appears only in the OBS preview, in playback from another device, or in a saved recording. Preview lag by itself does not establish what viewers receive. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder guidance
If the whole stream reaches viewers late
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between camera capture and the event appearing for viewers. Its player read-ahead buffer is a main source of that delay: a smaller buffer can lower latency, but makes buffering more likely. Congestion or other connection conditions can add delay even when the connection appears able to sustain the average bitrate. YouTube’s live-stream latency guidance

Choose the latency option according to how much real-time interaction the ASMR stream needs:

Webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency setting. For an ASMR stream, Ultra-low is not automatically the right choice: use it only if near-real-time interaction matters more than the increased buffering risk. If the audio and picture are out of sync
Find which element is early
Use a test with a clear visual action and a corresponding sound, then check playback from a separate device or viewer-side connection. Decide whether the sound leads the image or follows it, and whether the mismatch stays consistent or worsens over time. Avoid applying an offset until you know which source needs adjustment.

Adjust the source timing in OBS
OBS documents a Render Delay filter, which delays rendering of a source image. One stated use is syncing a webcam image to microphone audio. If the picture is early relative to the microphone, a measured image delay may help; verify the result in an actual test stream rather than relying only on preview. The filter is a timing control, not evidence that OBS is necessarily the cause. OBS Render Delay Filter

Check for duplicate microphone capture
OBS can capture a microphone as a scene audio input. If the same device is also selected as a global audio input, capturing it twice can cause echo. Check global and scene audio sources before trying to compensate with timing offsets. OBS Audio Sources
When to investigate the network or encoder
If the problem comes with stuttering, dropped frames, intermittent disconnections, or stream-health warnings, check the path from the computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue on that path, such as an unstable connection or one unable to keep up with the selected bitrate. Lowering the video bitrate is one troubleshooting action; YouTube also advises testing beforehand and choosing settings reliable for the available upload connection. These signs make network checks worthwhile, but do not by themselves prove that the network caused an audio/video sync mismatch.

- Run a test stream with the same representative audio and movement as the ASMR session.
- Monitor YouTube stream health while the test is running.
- If dropped frames or disconnections occur, lower the video bitrate and reassess connection stability.
- Compare remote playback with the OBS preview to distinguish viewer output from local preview behavior.
