A blank screenshot is a symptom, not a diagnosis. First find out whether the browser page is actually empty or whether a screenshot was captured but omitted, rejected, or mishandled on its way back to the MCP client. Check the active page URL and content, then inspect the screenshot tool’s arguments and response, image format, and installed server and client versions.
1. Check whether the browser is showing the expected page
After navigation, use the MCP server’s supported page-inspection tools to read the current URL and inspect the page snapshot or DOM. A success message from navigation alone does not establish that the expected page became active.
- If the URL is
about:blankor the page body is empty, troubleshoot navigation, active-tab or page selection, the browser session, and the browser connection before focusing on screenshot output. - If the URL and inspected content are correct but the image is blank or absent, focus next on capture arguments and how the client receives or displays the image.
A Chrome DevTools MCP issue describes navigation appearing successful while the URL remained about:blank, the body length was zero, and the screenshot was blank. The reporter said the same sites rendered in manually run headless Chrome. That comparison may help isolate a particular setup, but the report’s suggested target-selection or load-race explanations were hypotheses, not confirmed causes. See the issue report.
2. Confirm what the screenshot tool returned
Inspect the tool result, not just the client’s image preview. Determine whether it contains inline image content, a saved-file path, an omission setting, or an error. These are different outcomes and call for different fixes.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Playwright MCP, the official documentation says that omitting filename returns the image inline in the tool response. It also documents --image-responses=omit, which keeps images out of that response. Check the arguments and server configuration actually in use; do not assume every MCP screenshot tool uses the same defaults. Playwright MCP documentation.
3. Check output-path arguments and tool schemas
Look at the client-visible tool schema and the values sent for the screenshot call. An omitted path and an empty-string path may not mean the same thing. A Chrome DevTools MCP issue reports a client sending an empty filePath that was validated as a path and rejected before capture. The reporter said omitting the output path had previously returned a PNG inline. Review the path-validation report.

- Inspect the screenshot tool’s declared arguments in your MCP client.
- If a path is optional, omit the argument rather than passing
"", unless that server explicitly documents empty-string behavior. - Read the complete tool response for validation errors before retrying. A rejected call may not have produced an image at all.
4. Verify the actual image format and metadata
If inspection confirms the page is rendered and a screenshot file was reportedly saved, but the client rejects or cannot display the returned image, compare the file’s actual encoding with its declared media type. Also check the versions of the MCP server and client involved.
A Playwright MCP issue for v0.0.47 reports an image/jpeg media-type mismatch and a client/API 400 error even though the file was reportedly saved. The reporter suspected a PNG/JPEG metadata mismatch and said v0.0.42 worked in that setup. These are version- and configuration-specific user reports, not a confirmed general defect or a guarantee that downgrading will help. Verify your own payload and versions before changing them. Read the reported issue.

5. Reduce capture size when inline responses are too large
Large full-page screenshots can exceed a service’s inline-response limit even when capture itself works. Microsoft Playwright Workspaces documents a 768 KiB limit for inline screenshot base64 data and recommends JPEG, viewport captures, or element-level captures for oversized screenshots. This is a limit documented for that service; do not assume it applies to other MCP servers or clients. Microsoft’s screenshot guidance.
- Try a viewport capture instead of a full-page capture.
- Capture only the relevant element if the tool supports it.
- Use JPEG if supported and suitable for the image.
6. Use page inspection and the screenshot together
Structured inspection and a screenshot answer different questions. Playwright MCP interactions use the page’s accessibility tree and return structured roles and text; screenshots provide visual verification. If the snapshot contains the expected text but the screenshot is missing or blank, prioritize capture and response handling. If both are empty, revisit page navigation, the active page or tab, session state, and browser connectivity. Playwright MCP documentation.
