A washing machine smelling after a steam cycle does not necessarily mean the steam caused a problem. Common causes include detergent residue, moisture or debris trapped in the gasket or dispenser, wet laundry left in the drum, a clogged pump filter, or a drainage issue. The right next step depends on whether the odor is musty, sewage-like, or burning—and on your washer’s make and model.
Does a steam cycle cause washer odors?
The timing alone does not prove that steam created the odor. Manufacturer guidance identifies residue, trapped moisture, delayed removal of wet laundry, filter problems, and drainage setup as common sources of washer smells; it does not establish a general mechanism by which steam causes an odor.

There is one useful model-specific detail: Whirlpool says some of its steam washers use steam during the first phase of the Clean Washer cycle. On those models, the steam phase can last up to 20 minutes, and condensation on the door window or a washer-cleaner tablet that has not fully dissolved yet can be normal. What does the smell suggest?
Musty or mildew-like odor
Check for moisture and residue in the door gasket, detergent dispenser, and drum, as well as wet clothes left in the washer. Detergent overdosing or using non-HE detergent in an HE washer can contribute to excess suds and residue. LG also identifies debris and retained water around the gasket as possible contributors to mold and odor.

Sulfur or sewage-like odor
Check the drain hose and drain installation against the instructions for your exact washer. Samsung says sulfur or sewage odors can be associated with drain-hose placement and siphoning. If the hose arrangement appears correct but the smell continues, contact the washer maker or a qualified technician rather than repeatedly adding cleaner.
Burning odor
A burning smell is different from routine mildew maintenance. Samsung recommends contacting support if it continues beyond the initial cycles. Stop treating it as a cleaning problem and seek manufacturer guidance if the odor persists.

How to troubleshoot the odor safely
- Identify the cycle and the odor. Note whether it followed a steam wash, steam refresh, or Clean Washer/Tub Clean program, and whether the smell is musty, sewage-like, or burning. Cleaning instructions and steam behavior vary by model, so check the owner’s manual before choosing a remedy.
- Inspect the accessible areas. Following the manual, remove residue or debris from the dispenser and gasket. Take wet laundry out promptly. Leave the door and dispenser drawer open to dry when the manual and household conditions allow.
- Check the pump filter only as directed. A clogged drain-pump filter can impair draining and leave water in the drum. Use the model’s filter-cleaning procedure, account for trapped water, and never remove the filter while the machine is running or the water is hot. Electrolux also advises following the washer’s instructions for filter handling: Electrolux UK’s washer odor guidance.
- Run the maker-prescribed cleaning cycle. Use the product and amount approved for that washer and cycle. Run the drum empty when the manufacturer directs. Do not assume one brand’s cleaner instructions apply to another.
- Escalate if correct cleaning does not resolve it. LG advises service if odor persists after multiple Tub Clean cycles; Samsung advises contacting support if odor or mold remains after several attempts.
Why cleaner instructions differ by brand
There is no universally best washer cleaner established by the manufacturer guidance. Choose by compatibility with your exact model and cycle, the cleaner chemistry allowed by the manual, and the specified dose and placement.

These are different instructions for different products and machines, not ingredients to combine. Do not mix cleaners or improvise substitutions. The relevant manufacturer pages are Whirlpool’s Clean Washer guidance, LG’s musty-odor instructions, and Samsung’s odor and cleaning instructions.
How to reduce the chance of the smell returning
- Measure detergent according to its label and stay within the dispenser’s MAX line; for an HE washer, use HE detergent.
- Remove wet laundry promptly after a cycle.
- Wipe or clean the gasket and dispenser as described in the manual, and allow the door and drawer to dry between uses when practical.
- Use the washer’s recommended maintenance cycle and interval. Manufacturer schedules are maintenance recommendations, not a guarantee that every odor will be prevented.

When to contact support
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician if a musty odor remains after following the correct cleaning procedure, if drainage problems persist, or if the smell is burning or sewage-like and the installation checks do not resolve it. Without the exact model, odor description, and drain setup, the cause cannot be diagnosed reliably.
