They often preserve the full picture; by themselves, they do not mean your device or video is broken. Before changing a setting, check whether the bars are in the source video or are being added by the player or display.
What aspect ratio means—and why bars appear
Aspect ratio is a picture’s width compared with its height. A 16:9 frame is wider than a 4:3 frame. If a player shows the entire picture on a screen with a different shape, it can scale the image proportionally and leave unused space. Microsoft Learn describes 4:3 and 16:9 as ratios used in many video standards.

Bars above and below the picture are commonly called letterboxing; bars at the sides are commonly called pillarboxing. Terminology can vary: Microsoft also uses “letterbox” more broadly for scaling an image to fit a display area. The important clue is where the empty space appears and whether it is part of the video itself.
There is also a technical distinction between pixel aspect ratio (the shape of an individual pixel) and display aspect ratio (the shape of the displayed picture). For formats where pixel shape matters, Microsoft gives the relationship as: DAR = (image width in pixels / image height in pixels) × PAR. For most everyday troubleshooting, start by comparing the video frame’s shape with the screen or player’s shape.

First find out where the bars are coming from
- Note their position. Bars at the top and bottom often mean the picture is wider than the display; bars at the sides often mean it is narrower. Bars on all four sides can point to a smaller picture surrounded by unused space, but inspect the source before drawing a conclusion.
- Play the original file in another player. Compare it with the hosting page, an embed, or another playback app. If the bars appear in the original file too, they may be baked into the video. Vimeo notes that side black space on its clip page can come from the page design, and that its player does not automatically remove hard-coded bars.
- Check whether the issue is limited to one page, input, or device. If the source file looks correct elsewhere, the player layout or connected device may be adding the space. For a TV, Sony says the result can depend on the content, TV, set-top box, and connected device; available menu labels and modes vary by model. If it happens only on one input, check that device’s output settings.
- Identify the intended frame shape. Classic 4:3 footage on a widescreen display commonly has side bars. A film wider than 16:9 may have top and bottom bars on a 16:9 TV. In both cases, the bars can preserve the complete original image.
Choose whether to preserve, crop, or stretch the picture
There is no single best setting for every video. The choice is between keeping the complete frame, filling more of the display, and retaining correct proportions.

These are the basic fit, crop, and stretch choices described by Microsoft Learn. Adobe Help Center describes letterboxing and pan-and-scan as ways of handling different frame shapes; Sony warns that TV zoom or wide modes can cut off or distort the picture.

Fix the problem that matches what you found
The bars are part of a movie or original recording
If the bars preserve a film’s wider frame or 4:3 footage, leaving them in place keeps the whole composition visible. Use a TV’s Zoom or Wide mode only if you accept that it may enlarge the picture by cutting off edges or distorting proportions. For a film wider than a 16:9 screen, top-and-bottom bars can be expected rather than a fault.
The bars are baked into a video you are editing
Reformatting or cropping can remove embedded bars, but cropping also removes picture content. If you are fitting the complete image into a differently shaped project, empty space may remain instead. Microsoft Support documents aspect-ratio presets and Fit and Fill controls in Clipchamp. After changing the project ratio, review each clip: a setting that works for one shot may crop an important subject in another.

The bars appear only on a website or in an embedded player
Compare the source file with the page and an embed or alternate player before editing or re-exporting the video. The page itself may surround the player with black space, and the player’s dimensions may not match the video. Vimeo specifically notes that black space on its clip page can be part of the page design, while bars encoded into a source are not automatically removed by its player.
The bars appear only on a TV or one connected device
Check the aspect-ratio or picture-size setting on the TV and on the connected set-top box or playback device. Sony’s guidance is that behavior depends on the content and connected equipment, and that menu names and available modes vary by TV model. Prefer a proportional fit when you want the full picture; use zoom only when losing some of the edges is acceptable.

If you publish video, avoid adding bars unnecessarily
YouTube says its player adapts to different aspect ratios and recommends not adding padding or black bars directly to uploaded videos. Uploading the intended frame without artificial padding lets the player adapt it to the viewing area. YouTube’s standard aspect ratio for computer playback is 16:9; that is a platform specification, not a guarantee that every video should be cropped to 16:9. Preserve a deliberate original composition rather than cutting off important content just to eliminate bars.

Common black-bar problems and what to try
- The bars remain after changing a TV setting: Check whether the video itself contains them and whether the connected box or device has its own picture-size setting. TV modes and menus vary by model.
- The picture fills the screen but looks stretched: Switch back to proportional fit or scaling. Stretching fills space by changing image proportions.
- Zoom removes the bars but cuts off subtitles or faces: Return to fit, or accept a crop only if the lost edges do not matter. Zoom can remove parts of the original frame.
- A web player has black space but the downloaded file does not: Check the page layout or player sizing and compare an embed or another player before modifying the video.
- Bars remain after editing: Check whether they are embedded in the source clip, then inspect the project ratio and the clip’s Fit or Fill choice. Review each clip after changing the project ratio.
