A smartwatch can show the wrong time because it is using a manual setting, has not synchronized with its phone or network, or has not received an updated time zone. First compare it with the paired phone and check the watch’s time source; the symptom alone does not prove the watch is faulty.
What the kind of time error can tell you
- Off by about an hour or a whole time zone: Check automatic time-zone updates, the paired phone’s settings, and whether the watch has synchronized since travel or a daylight-saving change.
- Gradually gaining or losing seconds or minutes: Check the selected time source and confirm a successful phone or app sync. If it remains inaccurate after syncing, consult support for the exact model.
- Wrong after being powered off or used without a phone: Standalone behavior differs by model. Some watches may need a network update or manual correction after extended time without a paired phone.
These are troubleshooting clues, not a diagnosis. Smartwatches do not all get their time the same way: depending on the model and settings, the source may be a paired phone, a network, GPS, or a manual entry.

How to troubleshoot a smartwatch that loses time
- Check the paired phone. Compare the watch with the phone and verify the phone’s date, time, and time zone. For Apple devices, Apple advises checking internet access, software updates, automatic date and time, and Location Services settings for time-zone information where applicable: Apple’s time and time-zone guidance.
- Make sure the watch is connected as intended and sync it. Open the watch maker’s companion app and request a sync if available. Garmin documents syncing through Garmin Connect; its watches may use app synchronization or GPS to update time. See Garmin’s time troubleshooting steps.
- Check whether time is automatic or manual. If the watch is set manually, it may not adjust automatically for a time-zone or daylight-saving change. On supported Samsung models, check the time settings for automatic network time; available menus depend on model and software. See Samsung’s instructions for an incorrectly timed watch.
- Try GPS outdoors if the model supports it. Move to an open area and allow a GPS-equipped watch to acquire a satellite signal. Garmin notes that models without integrated GPS may need to update through the phone app instead. Exact controls vary by model.
- Restart the watch and check for software updates. Apple recommends restarting a paired Apple Watch when prompted that updated time-zone information is available. Garmin also lists power cycling and checking for software updates as further troubleshooting steps. Follow the instructions for your model.
- Re-pair or reset only if earlier checks do not help. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific directions. A reset can erase data stored on the watch; back it up first if the device supports backup. Samsung describes reset as a troubleshooting step, not the first check.
How timekeeping differs across watches
| Situation or time source | What to know | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Paired phone | Samsung says a paired watch syncs time with its phone. Garmin watches commonly update by syncing with Garmin Connect. Apple’s guidance emphasizes internet access and automatic date/time and time-zone settings on the paired device. | Correct the phone’s date, time, and time zone, then sync through the companion app. |
| Standalone use | Samsung says a standalone watch may not automatically update after entering another time zone and may need manual setting after an extended period powered off. This does not apply to every Galaxy model. | Check whether the specific model supports standalone setup and follow its time-setting instructions. |
| GPS | Some Garmin watches can update time after acquiring GPS; models without integrated GPS may rely on app sync. Garmin Bounce’s manual also describes updates through paired-phone sync or GPS signals. | If supported, acquire GPS outdoors; otherwise sync with the paired phone. |
| Manual time | Garmin states that manual time prevents automatic adjustment for time-zone and daylight-saving changes. | Switch to automatic time if the model offers it, or update the time manually when needed. |
Garmin summarizes its approach this way: “Most Garmin watches update the date and time by syncing with the Garmin Connect™ app or by acquiring a GPS signal.” The time-source setting and menu sequence vary by model, so use the owner’s manual for exact instructions. Garmin Bounce’s owner’s manual gives a model-specific example.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the phone clock is correct, the watch has completed a sync, automatic time is enabled where available, and the displayed time is still wrong, seek the manufacturer’s support for the exact model. A persistent offset does not by itself identify a failed component; support can give model-specific steps before you consider repair or replacement.
