A stuck remote button or temporary software issue can also be responsible. Check settings and isolate connected devices before assuming the TV has a hardware fault; menu names and options vary by model, year, and region.
Check whether a power-on timer is set
Some TVs can turn on at a scheduled time. Open the timer or clock settings and turn off any power-on schedule you did not intend to use. The label may appear as “Power On Timer,” “On Timer,” or something similar, depending on the TV.

Find out whether an HDMI device is waking the TV
HDMI-CEC allows devices connected over HDMI to control functions such as TV power. A connected device can send a wake command, including while it is in standby. LG says an active feature can power on the TV when a connected HDMI device is activated or is in standby for automatic updating. Manufacturers use different names for HDMI-CEC: LG calls it Simplink, while Samsung calls it Anynet+.

Isolate the connected equipment
- Turn off HDMI-CEC on the TV. Look for the TV’s CEC setting; its location and label vary by model.
- If the TV still turns on, temporarily disconnect HDMI devices and observe whether the behavior stops.
- Reconnect devices one at a time. If the TV starts waking after a particular device is reconnected, check that device’s settings for HDMI-CEC or a similar control feature.
You can also disable the corresponding CEC setting on connected equipment. Turning CEC off can remove the convenience of controlling devices or TV power through HDMI, so use the isolation test first if you are unsure which device is responsible. Samsung’s Australian TV troubleshooting guidance describes Anynet+ and notes that settings vary by model and location.
Review network and mobile wake settings
Some supported TVs can be turned on by a phone or other device over a network. On supported Samsung models, check for “Power On with Mobile” and related network settings. If you turn off mobile wake, you also lose the ability to switch on the TV through SmartThings or another supported mobile feature.

Samsung also recommends checking event logs where available. Its Australian guidance says the “About TV” event-log feature applies to products manufactured in 2019 or later; availability and menu paths can differ by model and purchase location.

Inspect the remote for a stuck power button. As a quick isolation test, remove the remotes from the room and see whether the TV still turns on unexpectedly. If the behavior stops, check the buttons and test the remotes individually.

Update and power-cycle the TV
If timers, connected devices, network wake, and the remote do not explain the behavior, check for a software update. A power cycle may also help with a temporary software issue. Follow the procedure for your model rather than combining instructions from different manufacturers.
- Sony: Its guidance recommends unplugging the TV for 60 seconds before reconnecting it.
- LG: Its procedure is to unplug the TV, hold the TV’s power button for 30 seconds, leave it unplugged for five minutes, and then reconnect it.
These are manufacturer-specific instructions, not a single procedure for every TV. See the Sony troubleshooting guide or LG support guide for the instructions cited above, and consult your model’s manual if its controls or menus differ.

When to contact the manufacturer
If the TV continues turning on after you have checked its timer, disconnected HDMI devices, reviewed available wake settings, tested the remote, and followed the model’s power-cycle and update instructions, consult the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model or arrange service. Exact settings and troubleshooting steps vary by TV model, operating system, region, and connected equipment.
