Clear speech does not guarantee a correct result because a smart speaker has to complete several separate jobs: detect its wake phrase, capture your words in a noisy room, turn audio into text, interpret the request and connect to an assistant service. A failure at any one of those stages can sound like “it does not understand me.”
The fastest fix is to identify which stage failed. Watch for the activation light, check what the assistant heard, inspect the room and microphone, then test a short request before changing language settings or assuming the hardware is broken.

What “misunderstanding” can mean
People often describe three different problems with the same sentence. Separating them prevents you from trying the wrong remedy.

This distinction matters: speaking more clearly cannot repair a muted microphone, an offline speaker or a service that does not support the requested capability.

1. Check whether the wake phrase was detected
Start with a deliberately simple test: say only the wake phrase and wait for the activation light, tone or on-screen animation. If nothing happens, the device never reached the stage where it could interpret your sentence.
When there is no activation signal
- Confirm that the physical microphone-mute control is off. A muted microphone normally prevents wake-word detection.
- Check that no case, dust or object is covering the microphone openings. Use the cleaning and placement instructions for your exact model rather than inserting anything into the openings.
- Reduce competing sound temporarily. Turn down television or music and move away from running appliances to see whether activation becomes reliable.
- On supported Google devices, review hotword sensitivity. Google’s troubleshooting flow provides a sensitivity setting for devices that activate inconsistently.
If the speaker still shows no response to the wake phrase in a quiet room after these checks, continue with power and network checks before changing your pronunciation.
2. Find out what the speaker actually heard
If the activation indicator appears, the microphone was at least triggered. The next question is whether the captured words match what you said.

Ask the assistant to repeat the question or use the available interaction history to inspect the recognized wording. Google recommends speaking more slowly or trying another question when the displayed or repeated text is wrong. This test separates a transcription error from a correct transcription followed by an incorrect answer.
Alexa on Echo
Ask, “Did you hear me?” Amazon’s support guidance points to Alexa voice history and request read-back tools. Compare the stored or repeated phrase with your original words. If a name, number or song title is consistently changed, test a shorter phrase and pronounce the distinctive word at a measured pace.

Do not infer that the assistant “ignored” you until you have checked this record. A device may have heard a different sentence perfectly clearly from its own microphone’s perspective.
3. Fix the room before changing your speaking style
Distance, reflections and competing sound can erase consonants even when your voice sounds clear to another person standing beside you.
Placement changes that are worth testing
- Move an Echo away from walls, other speakers and steady background noise, as Amazon advises. A nearby speaker can feed the assistant its own audio, while a wall can increase reflections.
- Test from the position where you normally speak. A command that works with your mouth close to the device may fail from across a room.
- For wireless speaker models, Sony identifies noise, strong wind, echoes, blocked microphones and fast speech as possible obstacles. Treat these as model-specific guidance and consult the manual for your device.
- Temporarily stop music or video playback while diagnosing. Once recognition works in silence, reintroduce the sound source and find a workable volume and distance.
Keep the device on a stable surface with its microphones unobstructed. Do not place it inside a cabinet or directly beside a soundbar unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that arrangement.
4. Check mute state, power and Wi-Fi
A smart speaker can appear awake while being unable to reach the assistant service. Check the basics in this order:
- Look for the microphone-mute indicator and switch mute off.
- Verify that the speaker is powered by its supplied adapter. An underpowered or intermittently powered device can stop listening or restart during a request.
- Confirm that your phone and another device can use the same Wi-Fi network. If the network is down, voice recognition may stop after the wake phrase.
- Unplug the speaker, wait briefly, reconnect it and allow it to finish starting up. Google and Amazon both include disconnecting and reconnecting power in relevant troubleshooting flows.
- Repeat the wake-phrase test, then try a basic request such as asking for the time. A basic request helps distinguish a general connection problem from a problem with one service or skill.
A restart can clear a temporary software or network state; it does not prove that the microphone or speaker hardware is healthy.

5. Use a short, direct request
Once activation works, remove linguistic complexity from the next test. Say the wake phrase, pause briefly, then give one action in a short sentence. For example, ask for the weather or a timer before attempting a multi-part home-control routine.

Participants quoted in Ofcom’s smart-speaker work described more errors with fast speech, conversational phrasing, long distance and failing to leave a pause after the wake phrase. These are diagnostic experiments, not rules that you must permanently adopt. If a concise version succeeds, add one detail at a time until you find the phrase that fails.
When names and music requests fail
Proper names, artists and song titles contain uncommon sound patterns that are easy to transcribe incorrectly. Try saying the title alone after the wake phrase, then request the artist or service separately. If the assistant reads back the wrong word, the problem is in recognition; if it reads the title correctly but cannot play it, investigate account, service or content support instead.
6. Verify the configured language
A language mismatch can affect both recognition and what the assistant is allowed to do. On Echo, Amazon lists this path in the Alexa app:
- Open More.
- Select Settings.
- Open Device Settings.
- Select the affected device.
- Open the device settings, then General and Language.
- Choose the language intended for that device and complete any confirmation shown in the app.
Amazon warns that some languages do not support every capability, skill, music option or content type. Therefore, changing language is a check, not a guaranteed accuracy upgrade. After changing it, test the same short request and verify that the feature you need is available in that language.

Google devices use language controls in the Google Home and Assistant settings; the exact labels can vary by model and app version. Choose the language you actually speak to the device and avoid switching languages repeatedly while diagnosing, because changing settings makes results harder to compare.

Ofcom reported participant experiences involving regional and international accents, children’s voices, unusual speech patterns, pitch, volume, soft speech, fast speech, distance and a missing pause after the wake word. Participants also described having to repeat or rephrase commands, including music requests.
Those observations are qualitative. They do not establish that every assistant performs poorly for every speaker with an accent, nor do they show that one “correct” speaking style works for everyone. They do show why a person can be speaking clearly and still encounter inconsistent recognition.
Fair tests to try
- Keep your normal accent and compare a slower version of the same sentence.
- Move closer without raising your voice sharply; very loud speech can distort a microphone.
- Leave a short pause after the wake phrase.
- Ask another person to repeat the same short request from the same position. This checks the room and device without treating either speaker as the cause.
- For a child or soft-spoken user, test from a closer distance and reduce background audio rather than demanding louder speech.
An Ofcom participant said concise wording seemed easier for her speaker to understand. Treat that as an individual experience to test, not a universal prescription.
Platform-specific diagnostic paths
Google devices
- Say “Hey Google” and confirm the activation indicator appears.
- If there is no indicator, check microphone mute, placement and hotword sensitivity.
- If it activates, ask the assistant to repeat the question or inspect the available interaction history.
- Speak more slowly or try a different short question if the recognized wording is wrong.
- Check Wi-Fi and power, then disconnect and reconnect the device if the troubleshooting flow calls for it.
Echo devices
- Say “Alexa” and watch for the light ring response.
- Confirm the microphone button is not muted and that the supplied adapter is connected.
- Move the Echo away from walls, other speakers and background noise.
- Ask, “Did you hear me?” and review Alexa voice history or request read-back to inspect the captured phrase.
- Check Wi-Fi and internet access, then reconnect power if the device remains unresponsive.
- Review the Alexa app language path under More → Settings → Device Settings → device → General → Language and test whether the requested skill or content is supported.
Labels and available controls can change with app and device versions, so use the instructions shown for your exact model when a menu name differs.
Why false activations raise a separate privacy question
Misunderstanding is not limited to missed commands. A sound that resembles a wake phrase can activate a device accidentally.
Google says short audio snippets are processed on-device while Assistant waits for activation. If activation is detected, the request audio is sent to Google to fulfill the request; Google says audio recordings are not saved on its servers by default, subject to account activity settings and user choices. Its Safety Center states: “If no activation is detected, then those audio snippets won’t be sent or saved to Google.”
Amazon says Alexa-enabled devices ordinarily stream audio to the cloud after wake-word detection or button activation and describes cloud verification of wake-word detection. Amazon also describes Voice ID as using recordings to create an acoustic model for recognition and personalization. These are vendor descriptions, and the data flow is not identical across assistants. Review the privacy and activity controls for the platform you use, especially if accidental activations are a concern.

Consider hardware service only after a controlled test: the microphone is unmuted and unobstructed, the device has stable power and Wi-Fi, the room is quiet, the wake indicator appears inconsistently or not at all, and the same failure persists after a restart. Test from close range and, if possible, compare with another compatible account or device in the same network.
Buying a replacement is not the first-line fix supported by the troubleshooting guidance. Settings, placement, connectivity and request history should identify the failure stage first. If the device fails those checks consistently, consult the manufacturer’s warranty or repair process for the exact model.
A five-minute checklist
- Say only the wake phrase and look for the activation indicator.
- If there is no indicator, unmute the microphone, clear obstructions, reduce noise and test hotword sensitivity where offered.
- If it activates, inspect the repeated phrase or voice history.
- Move the device, pause nearby audio and try a short request with a brief pause after the wake phrase.
- Check power, Wi-Fi and language support; reconnect power and retest before concluding that the hardware has failed.
Ofcom’s findings make clear that misunderstanding and missed commands were prominent complaints among its participants, but the report did not provide a population-wide error rate. Treat your own repeatable tests—not a single failed command—as the evidence for deciding whether the problem is the room, the request, the service or the device.
