A halo that moves with bright objects is often a side effect of Mini-LED local dimming; a bright patch or dot that stays in the same screen location points to a different problem. Mini-LED TVs are still LCD TVs with backlights, so their dimming zones control light in groups rather than pixel by pixel. Use the pattern and a few safe checks to distinguish expected blooming from a source issue, surface debris, or persistent screen nonuniformity.
What kind of bright spot are you seeing?
A halo around bright objects
If a small bright object, subtitle, cursor, or highlight is surrounded by glow on a dark scene, local dimming is a likely explanation. The backlight is controlled in zones, and a zone may illuminate more area than the bright object itself. Acer describes this halo effect as a limitation of zone-based local dimming and says it cannot be completely eliminated in its described HDR case (Acer support article). That does not mean every Mini-LED TV blooms equally, or that every halo indicates a fault.

Clouding or brighter corners
Broad bright patches in dark scenes are often called clouding; a glow concentrated near a corner is sometimes called flashlighting. These patterns are associated with LCD backlight uniformity, not the halo around an individual highlight. RTINGS explains that diffuser placement, frame pressure, and differences in light intensity can contribute, and that uniformity can vary between individual TVs of the same model (RTINGS’ black-uniformity guide). Sony notes that uneven brightness or clouding is easier to see in dark rooms and can vary with brightness and contrast settings (Sony support guidance).
A dot that stays in one place
A tiny bright or colored dot may be a pixel issue, but it could also come from temporary video trouble, an app or input, the content itself, or something on the screen surface. TCL recommends checking whether a dot appears in different content and sources and gently cleaning the screen to rule out debris (TCL troubleshooting guidance). A dot that remains at the same physical location across apps and inputs merits a separate check from a halo that follows bright content.

Use the pattern to narrow down the cause
- Follows bright objects: A glow that moves with highlights, especially against dark backgrounds, is consistent with local-dimming blooming.
- Stays in one screen location: A fixed dot or patch visible across different apps and inputs may indicate a surface, pixel, or panel-uniformity issue.
- Appears only in one source: If the artifact is limited to one app, input, or scene, investigate that source before assuming the TV panel is at fault.
- Changes with the room: Clouding and halos can be more conspicuous in a dark room; ambient light and picture settings affect how visible they seem.
These clues help with troubleshooting but cannot diagnose a panel remotely. Judge the screen during ordinary viewing as well as demanding dark scenes: a faint artifact on a black test image alone does not establish that the TV is defective.
Try these safe checks in order
- Observe ordinary content. Check whether the glow follows bright objects or remains fixed in one spot. Compare more than a blank black screen.
- Compare apps and inputs. View similar content from another app or connected device. If the issue appears only on one source, troubleshoot that app, device, or connection first.
- Check for surface debris. Turn off the TV and gently wipe the area with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Do not press on the panel; cleaning can rule out debris but cannot repair blooming or backlight uniformity.
- Adjust viewing conditions cautiously. A small brightness reduction or more room light may make halos less noticeable. Picture mode and light-sensor settings can also affect perceived clouding on some TVs. Check the manual for your model, and note original settings before changing them.
- Document a persistent mark. If a dot or patch stays in the same place across content and sources and distracts during normal viewing, take a photo during ordinary playback. Record the TV model and the app or input where you see it, then contact manufacturer support or the seller.
Do not press or massage the screen, open the TV, or attempt an internal backlight repair as routine troubleshooting. Menu names and steps vary by model, operating system, and software version.

When to contact the seller or manufacturer
Seek support when a fixed mark persists across sources or a nonuniform patch materially interferes with normal viewing. Have the model, symptom description, photos, and purchase details ready. Ask the seller or manufacturer about the return or warranty terms that apply to your specific TV and region; there is no universal pixel-count or patch-size threshold established here that guarantees replacement.
