If your keyboard types the wrong letters, punctuation, or numbers, first check which keyboard layout or input method is active. A layout mismatch is the most common explanation for keys consistently producing different characters. If numbers replace letters on a laptop, check Num Lock; if one press creates several characters, adjust key-repeat settings. The right fix depends on the pattern.
Identify what is happening before changing settings
Notice which keys are affected and where the problem occurs. A few quick observations can point to the right fix:

- Different letters or punctuation appear consistently: check the selected keyboard layout or input method.
- Numbers or symbols appear instead of laptop letters: check whether Num Lock has activated an embedded number pad.
- One press produces two or more of the same character: check key-repeat settings.
- Accents or alternate characters appear: check whether an international input method is enabled.
- The issue happens in only one app or account: note that distinction; it can help narrow down the cause.
Also consider whether the problem began after changing language settings, connecting another keyboard, or pressing a shortcut. These clues are useful for diagnosis, but do not by themselves establish the cause.

The characters printed on physical keys and the operating system’s selected keyboard layout are separate. If the selected layout differs from the one you expect, a key can produce an unexpected character. Check the active layout before changing drivers or replacing the keyboard.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Look for the input-language indicator in the taskbar, or press Windows+Space to cycle through installed keyboard layouts.
- To review installed layouts, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region, then open the options for the relevant language and inspect its keyboard layouts.
- Select the intended layout. If an unintended layout is installed, remove it from the language’s options if you do not need it.
Changing the keyboard layout does not itself change the Windows display language. Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s Windows layout instructions explain how to view, add, change, and remove layouts.
Chromebook
- Open Settings > Device > Keyboard > Change input settings.
- Review enabled input methods and select the one you intend to use.
- To see the current language code on the shelf, turn on Show input options in the shelf.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Space to cycle forward through languages, or Ctrl+Space to switch back.

If numbers or symbols replace letters on a laptop
Some laptop keyboards put an embedded numeric keypad over part of the letter keys. When Num Lock is active, those keys can enter numbers or symbols instead of letters. Check for a Num Lock indicator or key marking and switch it off if appropriate. The toggle may be a dedicated Num Lock key or a model-specific Fn combination; there is no shortcut that works on every laptop. Check the laptop’s markings or manufacturer’s guide. HP’s guidance on incorrect notebook keyboard characters covers Num Lock and notes that keyboard language is controlled by the operating system, not simply by the key legends.

If one key press produces repeated characters
Repeated output is different from a layout mismatch: the key is producing the intended character, but more than once. On a Chromebook, adjust the key-repeat delay and repeat rate in keyboard settings. ASUS recommends these settings for Chromebook keyboards that produce two or more characters from a single press; this guidance is specific to Chromebook settings and should not be treated as a universal Windows or Mac procedure. If the keyboard types accents or special characters
An international input method can support accents and alternate characters intentionally. On Chromebook, the US International layout can use dead keys and AltGr combinations to enter special characters. If you see an accent or alternate symbol, confirm the selected input method before treating the behavior as a fault. Google’s Chromebook guide describes the supported input methods and special-character behavior.
If the problem continues on a Chromebook
After checking the selected input method and repeat settings, Google recommends this troubleshooting sequence:

- Restart the Chromebook.
- Test the keyboard while browsing as a guest. If the problem does not occur there, that helps identify whether it may be account-specific, but it does not diagnose every possible keyboard fault.
- Run ChromeOS Diagnostics.
- If the issue continues, contact the Chromebook manufacturer.

Record the device model and operating system, the affected keys, whether the issue appears in multiple apps, and whether it also happens with an external keyboard. That information can help distinguish a settings problem from a device-specific issue. The steps above do not establish a universal repair or replacement procedure, so use the device manufacturer’s support for model-specific diagnosis.
