HTML-to-image output can differ because the conversion tool captures the page in its own browser environment and with its own settings. Match the browser engine and version, viewport, device emulation, pixel scale, and page state before comparing results. Without the renderer and its configuration, there is no single cause to diagnose.
Why the same page can produce a different image
A screenshot is the result of both the page and the conditions under which it is captured. A conversion service may use a different browser engine or version from your interactive browser, or capture at another viewport size, device scale, zoom level, or point in the page’s loading and animation cycle.
These differences can change the layout, the captured area, or the output image’s dimensions and sharpness. Playwright, for example, exposes options for viewport versus full-page screenshots, output format, and screenshot scale in its screenshot documentation. Those options are examples, not proof that an unspecified converter uses Playwright or offers the same controls.
Check the settings in this order
- Identify the renderer. Record the conversion tool, browser engine, and version, then compare them with the browser used for the reference image. Different engines or versions can produce different results; the title alone does not identify which renderer is involved.
- Match the viewport and device emulation. Set the same width and height, and compare screen size, device scale factor, user agent, and mobile or touch emulation where the tool exposes them. Playwright documents viewport and device-emulation controls in its emulation guide.
- Check pixel scale and zoom. Find out whether the image is captured at CSS-pixel scale or device-pixel scale. Playwright describes CSS scale as one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scale uses device pixels. MDN’s devicePixelRatio reference explains that the ratio relates physical pixels to CSS pixels and that page zoom affects its value.
- Compare capture area. Make sure both images show the viewport or both show the full page. A full-page capture and a viewport capture are not equivalent even when the page itself is unchanged.
- Hold page state steady. Wait for the same content to load and capture at a consistent point. Animations and changing content can make successive images differ. For repeatable visual checks, Playwright’s screenshot assertions include pixel and color difference tolerances and a style-injection option for normalizing some dynamic elements; that does not guarantee every page can be made static.
- If the mismatch remains, inspect rendering inputs. Check the converter’s launch settings, resource-loading behavior, and available fonts. These are useful general checks, not a diagnosis established for your particular page.
Separate a size mismatch from a visual mismatch
First compare the actual pixel dimensions of the output files, not just how large they appear in an image viewer. Then compare the page layout and typography.

- Same dimensions but different layout: confirm the browser engine/version, viewport, emulation, and capture area.
- Same layout but softer or sharper output: investigate CSS-versus-device scale and device pixel ratio.
- Differences between repeated captures: stabilize loading and page state, including animations and dynamic elements.
Playwright’s screenshot option scale distinguishes CSS and device scale; check the specific converter’s documentation for its equivalent rather than assuming the setting is named the same way.
Make a controlled comparison
- Choose one URL or HTML document and use the same content in both environments.
- Record the renderer and version, viewport width and height, device-emulation settings, zoom or device pixel ratio, capture area, and screenshot scale.
- Capture once at CSS scale and once at device scale if the converter supports both.
- Compare the files’ pixel dimensions, then inspect layout and sharpness separately.
- Repeat at a stable page state. If possible, use a visual-comparison tool’s documented tolerance and style-normalization controls.
This procedure isolates variables; it does not establish that every conversion library exposes every setting. If you need case-specific help, include the converter name, renderer and version, output dimensions, and relevant settings.

Common troubleshooting cases
The converted image has unexpected dimensions
Check whether the converter captures a viewport or full page, then verify viewport dimensions and whether output uses CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale. Device scale can produce more image pixels for the same CSS layout.

Compare the screenshot scale and device pixel ratio. A CSS-scale capture produces one image pixel per CSS pixel in Playwright; a device-scale capture follows device pixels. Also make sure the reference browser was not at a different page zoom, which can affect devicePixelRatio.

Text or layout differs even though dimensions match
Matching dimensions do not establish that the environments match. Check browser engine/version, viewport, emulation, and page state; then inspect whether the converter loaded the same resources and fonts.
The images vary from run to run
Capture after the same loading conditions and at a consistent point in animations or dynamic updates. If your comparison tool supports it, use its documented tolerance and style-injection controls to normalize appropriate elements.
