The useful first question is what actually stops: only the game, the display, or the entire computer. Background software conflicts, graphics or other drivers, hardware faults, and restricted cooling airflow can all produce similar behavior. Classify the failure, record what changed, and then test the least disruptive explanation first.
Identify what “freeze” means
During the next incident, note which of these descriptions fits. Do not force the computer off until you have recorded any visible error.

Warmth by itself is not proof of overheating. Gaming places a normal heavy load on a computer. Dell’s guidance treats lockups, unexpected restarts, and shutdowns—especially with blocked vents or abnormal fan behavior—as reasons to investigate cooling.

- Write down whether the problem affects one game, several games, or Windows outside games.
- Note whether it starts after a particular amount of play, only during demanding scenes, or also while the computer is idle.
- Record changes made shortly before it began: a game installation or update, driver change, new hardware, peripheral, utility, overlay, or system setting.
- Capture the exact stop code, module name, or error text if Windows displays one.
These observations narrow the next test; they do not prove that the most recent change caused the freeze.

Test for startup-app and service conflicts with a clean boot
Use a Windows clean boot when a background service or startup application is a plausible suspect. Microsoft describes this mode as starting Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so conflicts affecting apps or games can be isolated. Some normal functionality is temporarily unavailable while testing.
- Sign in with an administrator account and search Windows for System Configuration (also called msconfig).
- Open the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services prevents you from disabling core Windows services by mistake.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. In Task Manager’s Startup apps list, disable enabled nonessential items.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Play the affected game long enough to reproduce the usual conditions. If the freeze disappears, re-enable disabled items in groups, restarting and testing after each group, until the conflicting item is isolated.
- When testing is finished, return to System Configuration, select Normal startup on the General tab, apply the change, and restart.
Use stop-code, log, and memory evidence after a restart or crash screen
If Windows restarts unexpectedly or displays a stop code, treat that evidence as a separate branch from a game-only hang. Record the code and “What failed” name, then:

- Open Device Manager and look for warning icons or a device whose status changed around the time the failures began.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect errors at the incident time. Microsoft’s blue-screen guidance specifically points to the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry after a memory test.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic when the restart or stop-code pattern makes a memory check relevant, and review its result in Event Viewer.
A clean memory result does not rule out every hardware or driver problem, and a game-only freeze does not establish that RAM is at fault.

Check cooling and airflow without assuming heat is the cause
Inspect the computer while it is powered off. Look for vents blocked by a desk surface, bedding, dust, or another object; fans that do not spin normally; or a sudden pattern of throttling, lockups, restarts, or shutdowns during sustained play. Consult the computer maker’s manual for the correct vent locations and service instructions—Dell’s recommendations are model-specific.

If visible dust or an obstruction is present, Dell advises turning the computer off, disconnecting power, and using canned compressed air to clear debris. Follow the can’s directions and your manufacturer’s procedure. Do not open the system, replace thermal material, or buy cooling hardware solely because the case feels warm or because one freeze occurred.
Choose the next check by the evidence

When to escalate
Contact the computer maker or use its model-specific hardware diagnostics when freezes continue after the software isolation steps, a diagnostic reports an error, a fan appears to have failed, or the computer keeps restarting or shutting down. Keep the stop code or diagnostic code, the game(s) affected, the timing pattern, and the steps already attempted. Recovery options can have different effects, and Microsoft warns that some recovery actions may cause data loss, so do not reset or reinstall Windows before preserving important files and confirming that less disruptive checks are exhausted.

The Bottom Line
The fastest route to the cause is to classify the failure first, then use evidence: clean-boot testing for background conflicts, stop-code and Event Viewer checks for Windows crashes, and conditional airflow or manufacturer diagnostics for signs of heat or hardware trouble. A single freeze cannot identify the failing component.
