A repeated disconnect can happen on the encoder-to-cloud input, the cloud service’s connection to YouTube, YouTube ingest, or only on a viewer’s playback. Start by identifying which link failed; a generic “disconnected” notice does not prove YouTube caused it.
First identify which connection is dropping
A live stream may pass through several stages: an encoder sends video to a cloud service, that service processes or forwards it to YouTube, YouTube ingests the stream, and viewers play it back. A fault at any stage can look like “YouTube disconnected” from the outside.
- Encoder to cloud: The source encoder stops sending, or the cloud service rejects its input.
- Cloud to YouTube: The cloud service loses its outgoing connection or has a destination or credential problem.
- YouTube ingest: YouTube receives an unhealthy or interrupted feed.
- Viewer playback: The stream may still be live while one viewer, a shared network, or a wider set of viewers has playback trouble.
YouTube’s guidance distinguishes a problem affecting one viewer’s device or network from one affecting multiple viewers on a shared network or many viewers across different networks. Check the creator’s dashboards and, if possible, ask viewers what they see before treating playback trouble as a stream-output failure. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers these distinctions.
Capture the evidence before changing settings
- Note the exact time and message. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect stream health and record any specific error. Match its timestamp against your cloud provider’s input, output, encoder, and channel events. YouTube explains the available metrics in See your live stream’s metrics.
- Identify what the provider says disconnected. Look for separate input and output status rather than relying on a single general status badge.
- Check whether the source is still healthy. If the local encoder preview or recording is already poor, investigate the source, encoder errors, computer load, and software version. If the source looks good but the outgoing connection fails, focus on the network or cloud-provider path.
- Save logs or screenshots. Include the message, timestamp, stream or channel identifier, and whether the issue affected one or multiple viewers. These details help the provider trace the event.
Check the failing stage
If the encoder cannot reach the cloud input
For a service that ingests a feed from your encoder, verify that its input endpoint is correct and attached to the intended channel, that the channel is running and awaiting input, and that no other encoder is already connected to the same endpoint. If the service uses an IP allowlist, confirm the sender’s current IP is permitted.

These are documented failure checks for Google Cloud Live Stream API, not universal settings for every provider. Follow the equivalent input and channel diagnostics in your own service’s dashboard. Google’s provider-specific examples are in its Live Stream API troubleshooting guide.
If the cloud service sends directly to YouTube
Confirm that the destination server URL and stream key match the stream currently configured in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s password and address for sending a feed. If you reset or replaced the key, update the cloud service as well; an old key can leave the service unable to publish. See Manage live stream settings.

If the error mentions RTMPS, SSL, or a timeout
Check that the destination URL uses the intended protocol, that the encoder supports RTMPS, and that the port is configured correctly. For the SSL and timeout cases covered in YouTube’s guidance, check port 443. Do not change protocol or port speculatively if the error points elsewhere; verify the service’s supported endpoint details. YouTube’s instructions are at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
If the feed is unstable or unhealthy
Match output quality to the upload bandwidth available at the actual sender. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, testing the upload bitrate, and testing with movement and audio similar to the real program. Monitor stream health during the event. As YouTube Help puts it in Streaming tips, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”

Recommended encoder bitrates are settings guidance, not guarantees against disconnection. YouTube’s currently displayed recommendations are:
| Output format | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
Use the full current table for your resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide. The figures above are recommended settings, not minimum network speeds or proof that a connection is stable.

Use provider logs and failover carefully
Provider-side logs can show whether an input disconnected, an endpoint rejected a sender, or an output failed. For Google Cloud Live Stream API, inspect platform logs for input-disconnect events and related errors; its platform logging documentation explains how. Google Cloud also documents a backup-input configuration that can take over when a primary input disconnects: Create a channel with a backup input stream. Failover can improve resilience, but it does not explain or repair the primary cause.
For Cloudflare Stream, its troubleshooting checks include the RTMPS URL and stream key, encoder software, whether the live input is enabled or keys were rotated, and webhook error events if webhooks are configured. These checks apply to Cloudflare Stream specifically; use its live-stream troubleshooting guide rather than copying another provider’s configuration.

Troubleshoot common symptoms
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Cloud dashboard says input disconnected | Check the encoder’s send status, endpoint URI, channel state, competing encoder connections, and any IP allowlist. |
| Input is healthy but output to YouTube drops | Check the configured YouTube server URL and current stream key, then inspect the provider’s output events and YouTube stream health. |
| SSL or timeout error | Verify RTMPS support, destination URL, and the required port; YouTube’s documented SSL and timeout checks call out port 443. |
| Only one viewer reports buffering or a frozen picture | Check that viewer’s device and network before changing the encoder or cloud settings. |
| Many viewers across different networks report trouble | Check YouTube stream health and the cloud service’s output logs at the same timestamp. |
| Video quality is already bad in the encoder preview or recording | Inspect the source, encoder errors, computer load, and software version before diagnosing a cloud-to-YouTube disconnect. |
When to contact the provider
Escalate when the failure repeats after verifying the correct endpoint, channel state, destination, key, protocol, and bandwidth. Send the provider the timestamp and time zone, exact dashboard error, affected input or output, relevant log event, and whether viewers were affected. Ask which connection failed and whether the event appears in its logs. If you use Google Cloud Live Stream API or Cloudflare Stream, include the provider-specific event or webhook details that its troubleshooting documentation recommends.
