How to Compare Cloud Bandwidth Limits for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the bitrate YouTube recommends for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then compare it with the selected cloud service’s sustained outbound capacity—not just its advertised maximum—and verify the actual setup under a representative test. Also check per-flow limits, burst behavior, network and CPU headroom, continuity rules, and data-transfer billing. These are separate limits: a VM can have ample throughput and still incur transfer charges or fail a 24/7 continuity requirement.

1. Set the stream’s bandwidth target

YouTube’s recommended bitrate is the encoder’s target workload; it is not a cloud VM specification. The relevant rate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists a recommended H.264 video bitrate of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are video settings, not a total network guarantee. Check YouTube’s current table for your exact settings rather than treating these examples as universal values: YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

YouTube recommends RTMPS and CBR in its encoder settings, and advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Its guidance says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A speed test is useful, but it does not replace a test of the actual encoder, cloud instance, route, and continuous workload.

Estimate transfer volume separately

A steady bitrate also lets you estimate how much data the contribution stream sends. As a rough decimal calculation, Mbps × 0.45 gives GB per day before protocol overhead. At 14 Mbps, that is about 6.3 GB per day. This is a calculation from bitrate and time, not a provider’s billed-usage figure; overhead, other traffic, and provider accounting rules can change the amount charged.

2. Compare cloud network limits that affect one continuous feed

Do not compare YouTube’s Mbps target directly with a provider’s headline Gbps maximum and call the decision settled. Find the exact VM size, region, destination path, and service policy. Then determine which limits apply to one encoder connection and whether published throughput is sustained, expected, or available only temporarily.

What to compare What to verify Why it matters for 24/7 streaming
Target bitrate YouTube’s current recommended setting for the codec, resolution, and frame rate It establishes the encoder’s intended contribution rate.
Outbound capacity External egress for the exact VM size and region, including the route to YouTube A VM maximum or expected figure does not establish real-world sustained throughput.
Per-flow ceiling Whether a single connection can use the published VM bandwidth One encoder feed may be subject to a flow-level cap distinct from the VM-wide limit.
Baseline and burst Baseline rate, credits, burst duration, and what happens when credits run out A stream that runs beyond the burst window needs adequate baseline capacity.
Workload headroom CPU and packet-processing capacity, network path, congestion, and application settings Nominal network capacity does not ensure the full encoder workload will remain stable.
Continuity Restart, maintenance, quota, and recovery behavior of the exact service A 24/7 channel depends on lifecycle behavior as well as bandwidth.
Data-transfer charges Current billing and quotas for the service, region, and account Throughput capacity is a rate; transfer billing counts accumulated data.

Per-flow and aggregate limits

Google Cloud Compute Engine documents a maximum external egress rate per unique 5-tuple flow of 3 Gbps for most machine series, with H3 and H4D documented at 1 Gbps per flow. These are provider limits, not measurements of a particular deployment. Google also documents overall external egress caps and project-level internet-egress quotas, so a per-flow maximum is only one part of the check. Consult the exact machine-series and quota details: Compute Engine network bandwidth.

A single YouTube encoder stream is normally far below those example flow ceilings, but the distinction still matters: a VM’s advertised aggregate capacity does not necessarily describe the capacity of one connection, and project or routing constraints can still apply.

Baseline versus temporary burst

Amazon EC2 bandwidth depends on the instance size and other factors. AWS documents baseline bandwidth and network I/O credits for many instance sizes with 16 or fewer vCPUs; credits can enable a temporary burst, typically for 5 to 60 minutes depending on size. That is not a sound basis for planning a continuous stream. Compare the selected instance’s baseline and the applicable single-flow and internet-gateway constraints, not merely an “up to” rate. See Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth.

Azure’s allocated outbound bandwidth

Azure describes VM network bandwidth as an allocation measured on outbound traffic and aggregated across the VM’s network interfaces. Accelerated networking may help a VM reach its allocated performance, but it does not raise that allocation. Microsoft’s guidance states, “The network bandwidth allocated to each virtual machine is measured on egress (outbound) traffic from the virtual machine.” See Azure VM network throughput.

Azure VM-size pages list expected outbound throughput, while warning that upper limits are guidance and actual performance depends on congestion, workload, and configuration. For example, the Dasv4 table lists 2,000 Mbps expected network bandwidth for Standard_D2as_v4 and 40,000 Mbps for Standard_D96as_v4. Those are family-specific published examples, not guaranteed sustained results for every route or workload; Microsoft says, “Upper limits aren’t guaranteed.” Check the exact size table: Dasv4 and Dav4 series sizes.

3. Validate the exact VM and route before relying on it

  1. Choose the encoder settings. Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to stream. Keep the encoder’s bitrate mode and ingest protocol aligned with YouTube’s guidance.
  2. Identify the full cloud configuration. Record the provider, VM family and size, region, network interfaces, destination route, and whether the connection goes through an internet gateway or other networking layer.
  3. Read the limits that apply together. Check VM-level outbound capacity, single-flow restrictions, baseline and burst terms, project or account quotas, and any lifecycle policy. Do not treat one maximum as the answer to all of these questions.
  4. Run a representative test. Use the actual encoder and stream settings from the chosen VM to YouTube. Test for long enough to expose temporary-credit limits and conditions likely to affect a continuous run; a short speed test alone cannot establish 24/7 stability.
  5. Monitor stream health and the VM. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators alongside encoder logs, CPU and network utilization, and any provider metrics for drops or throttling. Investigate recurring errors rather than assuming the published limit guarantees delivery.
  6. Recheck after changes. A different VM size, region, route, resolution, codec, or frame rate changes the assumptions. Repeat the comparison and test after a material change.

4. Treat continuous operation as its own requirement

Throughput does not answer whether a managed service will keep a channel running indefinitely. Check restart and maintenance behavior, quotas, recovery features, and the exact product’s documented lifecycle. For example, Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping. That rule is specific to the Live Stream API; it is not a general limit on Compute Engine VMs or YouTube. See Google Cloud Live Stream API channel management.

Likewise, do not confuse sending one contribution feed to YouTube with encoding and distributing a separate stream to viewers. In an ordinary YouTube ingest workflow, the cloud encoder sends its feed to YouTube, which handles viewer delivery. A cloud architecture that also prepares outputs and serves viewers is a different workload; AWS documents MediaLive and MediaPackage with CloudFront as a separate live-video delivery architecture: Live streaming on AWS solution overview.

5. Calculate transfer costs without confusing them with bandwidth

Bandwidth capacity describes how quickly data can leave the VM. Transfer billing measures how much data leaves over time, under the provider’s rules. A high network ceiling does not mean that data transfer is free or unlimited, and a low monthly allowance is not the same thing as a throughput cap.

Use the approximate daily-volume calculation from the selected bitrate as a starting point, then check the provider’s current pricing and usage calculator for the exact region, service, destination, and account. Include protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic. There is no single cross-provider transfer price that can be reliably applied to every cloud VM or 24/7 setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than managing VM networking and encoder operations, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
