Why Does My Cell Phone Ring When My House Phone Rings?

If your cell rings when someone calls your house phone, the home-phone service may be routing calls to both devices. Check its Simultaneous Ring, Multi-Ring, or forwarding settings.

Your home-phone service is likely set to ring more than one destination for incoming calls. A feature called Simultaneous Ring, Multi-Ring, or call forwarding can send a call to your house phone and your cell at the same time. This is a service setting—not evidence that the two phones are physically connected. The name, availability, and controls depend on your provider and plan.

How can one call ring both phones?

When someone calls your house number, the home-phone provider can route that incoming call to multiple destinations. Depending on the service, those destinations may include the house phone, a mobile app, or an external cell or landline number. Verizon lists Simultaneous Ring among its home-phone calling features, and Ooma documents settings for selecting which devices ring for calls to an Ooma number.

With simultaneous ringing, the house phone can continue to ring while the cell rings. That differs from ordinary call forwarding, which sends a call on to another number rather than necessarily ringing both destinations together. Providers may use similar-sounding feature names, so check the behavior and settings for your particular service.

Is this the same as forwarding calls from your cell?

No. The direction of the call matters. Verizon’s mobile Call Forwarding FAQ describes calls made to a mobile number being sent to another number; while that forwarding is active, the mobile does not ring. That setting alone would not explain why your cell rings when someone calls your house number. A routing feature on the home-phone service is the more direct setting to investigate.

Where should you check?

  1. Identify the home-phone provider and service type. Traditional landline, cable or VoIP service may have different account controls and feature names.
  2. Sign in to the home-phone provider’s account or calling-feature controls. Look for Simultaneous Ring, Multi-Ring, or call-forwarding destinations that include your cell number.
  3. Review which destinations are selected. For example, Ooma’s Call Forwarding guide describes choosing whether incoming calls ring the Telo-connected home phone, the Ooma mobile app, an external domestic landline or cell number, or a combination. Ooma says this feature is available to Premier subscribers; confirm current plan terms with the provider.
  4. Ask the provider to verify the active feature if you cannot find the setting or did not enable it. Features, eligibility, and steps vary, and there is no universal code or menu path established for every provider.

What if you do not want both phones to ring?

Disable or change the multi-destination setting on the home-phone service, removing the cell number or turning off Simultaneous Ring or Multi-Ring if that is what your provider calls it. If the account does not show an obvious control, ask the provider which feature is routing calls from the house number and how to change it.

Do not assume a mobile-carrier forwarding code will turn off a feature configured on the home line. Verizon lists *73 for turning off its mobile Call Forwarding, but that instruction applies to Verizon mobile forwarding—not necessarily to simultaneous ringing on a home-phone account.

When should you troubleshoot the phones themselves?

If the phones ring normally but ring together, first check call-routing settings. Physical-line checks are more relevant when there are other service symptoms, such as no dial tone. Verizon’s home-phone troubleshooting guidance advises checking whether the phone needs power and isolating phones by disconnecting them and testing another phone. Those checks address service problems; they are not a direct fix for intentional simultaneous ringing.
