Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst find out whether the distortion follows one app or connection, or happens across every sound the speaker plays. Test assistant speech, another known-good stream, and Bluetooth if available. If only one source is affected, investigate that app or input; if every source sounds distorted, a speaker-side problem becomes more plausible. This comparison is a practical diagnostic clue, not a confirmed manufacturer rule.
Identify when the distortion happens
Play several sources at a moderate volume and note what changes. Check whether the sound is crackling, muffled, popping, or cutting in and out, and whether it occurs only at high volume, in one app, during assistant responses, or over Bluetooth. Also note whether it began after moving the speaker, changing its power supply, updating software, or changing a network connection. These observations help narrow the path to check; they do not prove a particular component has failed.

- One app or stream only: Try another stream or input and check the affected app or service.
- Bluetooth only: Troubleshoot the Bluetooth pairing and wireless environment.
- Streaming glitches alongside network dropouts: Check Wi-Fi before treating the speaker as faulty.
- Every source, including assistant speech: A device-side fault is more plausible, especially if the issue remains after a restart.
Restart the speaker and verify the playback source
Restart before attempting a factory reset, and change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped. For an Echo with a setup or connection problem, Amazon advises unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Then test another source. For other brands, follow the restart instructions for the exact model.
Check Wi-Fi when streaming audio breaks up
Network checks are relevant when streaming audio glitches occur along with disconnections or other connection problems. Google recommends confirming that Wi-Fi works on another device and checking that the speaker has the correct password. Rebooting the router and speaker, then force-closing and reopening the Google Home app, are also part of its troubleshooting guidance.

On a dual-band router, Google suggests trying both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Its setup guidance recommends having the speaker within 15–20 feet (4–6 m) of the router while troubleshooting; that is a setup distance, not a universal rule for speaker placement or audio quality. A temporary phone hotspot can help check whether the speaker connects on another network, but Google says hotspot use is not fully supported.

Troubleshoot Bluetooth separately
If distortion occurs only over Bluetooth, try installing available speaker updates, moving potential sources of wireless interference away, and removing and re-pairing the connected device. Amazon’s Echo Bluetooth guidance lists support for the A2DP SNK and AVRCP profiles; confirm the device you are pairing supports the profiles relevant to your use.

Use the correct power supply
If the speaker is restarting, failing to stay on, or showing other power-related symptoms, check that its adapter and cable are properly connected and use the supplied power equipment. Amazon’s power guidance concerns startup faults, not distorted audio, and says a replacement adapter must meet the specific device’s power requirements. Do not guess at voltage, wattage, or connector compatibility or use an arbitrary universal adapter.
Refer to Amazon’s Echo power troubleshooting guidance and the documentation for your exact model.

Reset only after simpler steps fail
A factory reset is not a routine first fix. Try a restart and the relevant source, network, or Bluetooth checks first. Google’s reset instructions warn that a reset clears data from the device and cannot be undone; button steps vary by model. Check the exact model’s procedure and be prepared to set the speaker up again.
For Google Nest or Home devices, use Google’s factory reset instructions. For other speakers, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support page rather than guessing at a button combination.

When to contact support
If the distortion remains across assistant speech, streaming, and other available inputs after a restart and relevant connection checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. The official guidance cited above does not establish a universal repair threshold or identify one component as the typical cause, so avoid ordering generic driver parts or replacing the speaker before the model is assessed.
Before contacting support, record the model and serial number, which sources and connections you tested, the volume level, when the problem began, and the steps you have already tried. A short recording can also help show the symptom if it captures it clearly.
