Why Does Google Maps Show the Wrong Location in Android Auto?

If Google Maps is misplaced in Android Auto, compare the car display with Maps on your phone. The difference helps identify whether to check phone location or vehicle infotainment.

Google Maps can show the wrong position in Android Auto when the phone’s location estimate is inaccurate or stale, or when the vehicle’s infotainment system contributes location data and is the source of the error. Compare Maps on your phone with the car display while parked: if both are wrong, start with phone location and reception; if only the car display is wrong, troubleshoot the infotainment system and seek vehicle-specific support.

First find out whether the error follows your phone

Park safely, disconnect or leave Android Auto inactive, and open Google Maps on the phone. Compare its blue dot with the position shown on the car screen. This simple check separates likely phone-side problems from faults that appear only in the vehicle display.

  • The phone and car are both wrong: Check the phone’s location settings, signal conditions and Maps compass calibration.
  • The phone is right but the car is wrong: Focus on the vehicle’s infotainment system or receiver. Some vehicle systems can supply GPS data to Android Auto.

Note what the error looks like: a dot that jumps, a position that stays behind, a broad uncertainty circle, or a direction beam pointing the wrong way can suggest different problems.

What the blue dot and circle tell you

Google says, “The blue dot shows your location on the map.” When the pale-blue circle around it is large, “You could be anywhere within the light blue circle.” A gray or absent dot can mean Maps cannot determine your current position and is showing an earlier one. Buildings, parking garages and other obstructions can weaken GPS or Wi-Fi reception. Google Maps Help explains the dot and location accuracy.

Google’s Android Maps help page describes GPS as capable of locating a device to around 20 meters when satellites are used; it also warns that GPS may be inaccurate indoors or underground. That is an approximate capability, not a guarantee that Android Auto will always place your car within 20 meters.

Check phone location settings and reception

  1. Turn on device Location. Android’s device-level Location setting must be enabled for Maps to determine the phone’s position.
  2. Allow precise location for Maps where available. On Android 12 and later, check the Google Maps app permission and enable precise location if you need precise navigation. This app permission is separate from the device’s Location Accuracy setting. Google’s Android Help describes both controls.
  3. Check Location Accuracy separately. Google’s Location Accuracy service can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks and device sensors. With it off, Android may rely on GPS and sensors alone when available, which can affect Maps accuracy.
  4. Improve reception. Turn off Airplane mode and turn on mobile data or Wi-Fi. If you are in a garage, tunnel or surrounded by tall buildings, move to a location with a clearer view of the sky and stronger reception.
  5. Turn off Battery Saver if the position jumps. Google recommends this for a location that keeps jumping.
  6. Calibrate the compass if direction is wrong. Move the phone in a figure eight as Maps instructs. Calibration can help when the directional beam is wide or points the wrong way; it does not correct a vehicle-side GPS fault.
  7. Restart the phone if the location remains wrong. Follow any current on-screen Maps guidance, since labels and steps can vary by Android device.

If only the Android Auto display is wrong

Restart the vehicle infotainment system. If Android Auto is running through an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s support site for firmware updates. If the car display remains wrong while the phone’s Maps position is accurate, contact the vehicle or receiver maker for model-specific help. Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the infotainment system and checking aftermarket receiver firmware.

Do not assume every Android Auto vehicle gets GPS from the phone. An Audi of America technical service bulletin dated March 23, 2017, for specified 2017 A3 vehicles equipped with MMI Radio plus says Android Auto navigation uses GPS and other vehicle information from the MMI rather than the phone’s location system. That bulletin establishes how that particular Audi setup works; it does not show that all cars work the same way. Read the Audi bulletin.

When phone placement is worth trying

If the phone’s own position is weak, repositioning it where it has a clearer view of the sky may help reception. TomTom recommends this for its own Android Auto app, which uses phone GPS. That advice is specific to TomTom’s app: it is not a Google guarantee, and it will not fix a fault isolated to vehicle-supplied location data. TomTom’s Android Auto support page describes its guidance.
