A flip phone’s speakerphone can cut out because something is blocking the speaker or a sensor, audio is routed to another device, software or call signal is interfering, moisture is present, or hardware has failed. A cutout alone does not prove the hinge flex cable is damaged. First check whether the problem affects calls only, all audio, or a particular hinge position.
First, find out when the sound cuts out
Test a speakerphone call, then play local music or a video through the phone’s built-in speaker. Note whether the fault happens only on cellular calls, in calling apps too, or during all playback. Also note whether it consistently starts at the same fold angle. Treat that pattern as a clue, not a diagnosis; do not keep flexing a visibly damaged or unusually hot phone.

- Calls only: Call signal, call software, or the call audio path may be involved.
- Calls and media: Obstruction, routing, software, moisture, or speaker hardware becomes more plausible.
- Only at a repeatable hinge position: A hardware issue warrants attention, but the symptom does not identify a particular internal part.
Try these checks before arranging a repair
- Remove possible obstructions. Take off the case and any film or accessory that could cover a speaker opening or top sensor. Keep fingers clear of the grille. Do not push objects into it or use compressed air unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your model specifically advise it. Samsung includes obstructions and physical damage among possible causes of speaker problems: Samsung speaker troubleshooting.
- Rule out audio routing. Turn Bluetooth off and disconnect wired accessories, then test the built-in speaker again. Sound may be directed to a connected device rather than the phone speaker.
- Restart and compare audio paths. Restart the phone. During a call, compare speakerphone with the earpiece and, if the phone supports it, a known-good wired headset. If only calls are affected or sound is choppy, try another location with stronger signal. Motorola recommends comparing speakerphone and headset audio and notes that weak signal can cause call problems: Motorola call and audio troubleshooting.
- Check for moisture and software issues. If the phone got wet, gently dry the exterior with a clean, soft cloth and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. Samsung advises against using compressed air to dry or clean the phone. Check for available system updates. If your model supports Safe mode, testing there can help determine whether a downloaded app is involved. Do not factory-reset before backing up your data and checking the instructions for your model.
- Run a built-in speaker test if available. On supported Motorola phones, the route described by Motorola is Device Help > Device diagnosis > Hardware Test > Speaker. Menus vary by model. Motorola directs users to authorized service if the test fails: Motorola speaker test instructions.
What the symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
Calls cut out, but music plays normally
This points toward a call-specific issue, but does not prove the built-in speaker is faulty. Compare the earpiece and a compatible wired headset, and test a call in another location. If the headset also has trouble, that is useful information to give support; it does not by itself identify the cause.
The speakerphone changes when the phone is folded
A repeatable change at a particular hinge position raises concern for a hardware fault. It still cannot establish that a flex cable is the failed component. Share the exact model, the fold position where the cutout occurs, and whether media playback is affected when contacting manufacturer or authorized service.

The top speaker behaves differently on speakerphone
Some phones have model-specific sensor behavior. Samsung says that on select Galaxy phones, the upper speaker is disabled during speakerphone calls when the proximity sensor is blocked, as a hearing-protection measure: Samsung’s explanation of top-speaker behavior. This does not establish a universal rule for flip phones; check the guidance for your specific model.
When to seek service
Arrange manufacturer or authorized service if the built-in speaker test fails, the cutout reliably follows hinge movement, or the problem persists after the basic checks. Tell support the model and software version, whether the phone was wet or dropped, which audio paths are affected, whether the problem changes with fold position, and the result of any speaker test. These details help narrow the issue without guessing at a replacement part.
If calls are difficult while you arrange service, a compatible wired phone headset may be a temporary workaround and a useful comparison test; connector compatibility varies by model, and a headset does not repair the built-in speaker. Do not buy a speaker, flex cable, or repair kit based on the cutout alone.

A legacy Motorola K1M manual says closing that model during speakerphone does not end the call and that speakerphone remains on until toggled off or the phone is turned off. That behavior applies to the K1M only; it should not be generalized to modern flip phones or foldables: Motorola K1M user guide.
